Dell PowerEdge T620 Tower Workstation Overview & Memory Upgrade Tips | How to Install & Configure
Dell PowerEdge T620 Memory “How To Guide” for RAM installation and configuration. In our video, we will review best practices for loading memory modules inside your Dell T620 tower server and provide a general overview of all the different options such as speeds, sizes and memory types accepted.
The PowerEdge T620 is part of the Dell 12th Generation family of workstations. This tower can be used like a desktop or as a 5U rackmount server operates. Dell’s T620 runs on dual Intel E5-2600 V1 or V2 series processors, which is an LGA2011 CPU socket. The T620 server is the next gen to the popular Dell PowerEdge T610 workstation. There are 24 DIMM slots powered by DDR3 memory modules. Speed options: 1066MHz, 1333MHz, 1600MHz or 1866MHz. Note 1866 will clock down to 1600 speed. Size options: 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB 32GB and all the way up to 64GB!
You can install two types of memory for your Dell T620: ECC Registered also known as RDIMM or Load Reduced also known as LRDIMM. This is very important. If you are just starting with your T620 and you believe you will want to scale up in the future, then LRDIMMs will be the best option for scalability as we will discuss more below. The big difference between ECC Registered and Load Reduced is the maximum configuration for the Dell T620. ECC Reg will only max out at 512GB via (16 x 32GB) DDR3 PC3-12800R 1600MHz Server Memory. Whereas, LRDIMMs will provide triple the capacity. You heard that right. Triple capacity! You can max your T620 with 1.5TB via (24 x 64GB) DDR3 PC3-12800L 1600MHz Load Reduced Server Memory. Now this is very puzzling. People often ask… Why can we use 24 x 64GB with LRDIMM and we can only use 16 x 32GB with RDIMM? Great question. This is known as the Rank Rule and we will solve this mystery in depth in our video. Another common question. Were 64GB DDR3 ECC Registered memory modules invented? Unfortunately, they do not exist. Only LRDIMMs support 64GB DDR3 DIMMs.
This system is a dual CPU socket 1U tower workstation server. Each CPU manages three Memory Channels. Each memory channel controls three DIMM slots. Note: This is very important. All 32GB DDR3 DIMMs are Quad Rank and this is the main reason the Rank Rule becomes an issue for the Dell PowerEdge T620 server. Dell has labeled & color coded the memory channels. White is the first DIMM slot in every channel. Followed by black and then green. The proper configuration for dual CPUs is in duplicates of eight, which will evenly spread the load across each channel. We will discuss this in more depth in our video and also show you how to install the DIMMs inside your Dell PowerEdge T620 server.
Learn more about all the different memory options for your PowerEdge T620 server. Dell brings us yet another high-performing workstation with the T620 offering storage, powerful processing, and massive memory. This tower server is perfect for small-business demanding enterprise-level performance in a limited office space. Made to handle high-performance computing, this system supports Intel Xeon E5-2600 v1/v2 series processors.

Thanks for the vid! Question: We currently have one of those Dell T620 servers with 2 Intel Xeon E5 2609 v2 CPUs (they are 80W TDP each) and we are looking forward to upgrade these to 2 Intel Xeon E5 2670 v2 CPUs (which are 115W TDP each). Will the server default heatsinks/fans handle these bulkier processors just fine or should i upgrade them somehow? (they are exactly the same as in the vid – heatsink reference code 056jy6)

Good day everyone. Still noob and need advice to people i think who knows more than me on this.
Currently we're using Dell T620 with Processor(s) Intel Xeon Silver 4210 2.2G, 10C/20T
with 2x 16GB SKhynix 16GB 2Rx8 PC4 – 2666v-re2-12(HMA82GR7JJR8N-VK TF AC) Memory on it and 1 of the memory just crush down.
So i decided to purchase 1 replacement for that memory and our supplier offer me this Memory
* Dell 16GB 3200 MT/s Memory
* Kingston KTD-PE426D8/16G Memory
Which 1 of this memory is suitable for my server and does this memory can work together with our 1 remaining SKhynix 16GB 2Rx8 PC4 memory?
Please if anyone can help me with this

Hi, I have T620 with 24 gb of memory( 6x4gb). Is it ok to buy extra 8x 32gb and mix or it has to be only 32 gb? How to configure the memory? Where to put 32gb? My curent 4gb are installed at A1 A2 A3 and B1 B2 B3. Thanks.

Thanks for the video, I have a question /request. Is there any chance you can make a few videos for the T620 one about replacing the Motherboard when it goes bad, and one on how to install the Dell MDCVH PowerEdge T620 Power Distribution Board 296-004X-A00 0MDCVH to power compatible GPU cards? I am debating buying the card because based on what Dell says the only way to get it is adding it whit the initial order. Thank you

Thanks for the informative videos, really helpful.
I have one thing that i don't quite understand in this particular video , and that is regarding the memory ranks on your 64GB LRDIMM's
You are saying at one point that a memory can have up to 8 ranks / channel , and that 32GB LRDIMM's are seen as 2 rank / memory module by the motherboard , doesn't that mean that 64GB LRDIMM's are seen as 4 rank / module which would make it go over the 8 ranks / channel ?
Thank you!

Membist error bios disabled a3/a6 slot? Any fix on bios?
@bonepickerx
October 28, 2024 at 11:18 am
First off, the thing you want to know about this Dell Server is that the BIOS allows you to turn off the Dell CPU throttling (Dell did this to reduce Service calls and cpu replacement) when its in power saving mode the CPUs are anemic and wont even turbo under heavy load most of the time (Dell has made this option unavailable in all the newer BIOS'). With CPU Performance mode turned on you can RUN the CPU's at full power (No Throttling). This CPU – Intel Xeon E5-2687W v2 SR19V 3.40GHz/4GHz Turbo 25MB Cache 8-Core LGA2011 is the most powerful processor available for the Dell T620. It does require a BIOS update to Bios V 2.0.19 to support the Higher end CPU's that you can still get on Ebay for around $150.00 for a matched pair (Do not buy CPUs from CHINA Ebay sellers). Once you get the BIOS upgraded and add the CPU's you can put them in High Performance Mode and they will run at 4GHz during all CPU intensive operations without throttling down. Also, spring for the 1100 Watt Titanium power supplies also available on Ebay and also inexpensive. Use good thermal paste for the new CPU install, like Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut or Arctic Silver. Get a PCIe x 8 raid card that supports 6GB speeds or 12Gb if you want to future proof your build when the 12GB SSDs come down in price (Likely not anytime soon). Then buy 8-32 Samsung 840 EVO 1Tb SSDs ($63.00 ea. on amazon) which mount in the stock Dell drive caddies without modification 2.5" and 5.75" will work I have 5.75" and 8 SSD drives in my T620 with no issues. Add in at least 256Gb of ECC Ram, (I have 396Gb of DDR3 ECC memory) and you will have an inexpensive Corvette Server. You can also install a PCIe x8 10Gb Network Card, the dual Intel X540 is inexpensive on Ebay new and used they are dirt cheap; if you have a 10G backbone your set. Disable the onboard Broadcom NICs in the BIOS they are absolute garbage! Finally I also added an Nvidia 1050Ti video card I had laying around (Install in the TOP PCIe x16 slot), and it works great 1000 times better than the Matrox G200eW3 which is as old as I am, I've been doing this 40 years now, you know since before there was an actual internet. The trick is to install the Video card and disable the onboard Matrox in the Operating System, do not disable the Matrox G200 in the system BIOS. The Server will boot post with the Matrox and switch to the Nvidia when Windows loads. This thing will run circles around most current servers for about 75% the price. If you can find a 16 or 32 2.5" Drive Bay T/R620 Chassis and fill it with 1TB SSDs you'll have a server that will last well beyond most servers you'll easily pay 2 to 3 times for what you can build this one for in smart parts investment. A T620 8 -16 bay runs between $400.00 to $600.00 on Ebay.

need help: our t620 is stuck in the memory configuration and have drained all power with the reset. when install the memory out of order we get the "not populated in correct order" error makes me believe that DIMM slots are working correctly and reads the order. I have tried testing new memory and it is the same issue. i have booted the server without the PERC controller, network card all other peripherals and the issue persists. any recommendations?
