The best thing about old serwers is Linux support. The newest Fedora 36 is running on my Dell r710s out of the box, no 3rd party drivers needed. It's not like a regular retro computers with no support for software newer than Windows NT 4, or MacOS 9.

An hpe dl360/380 gen 9 with v4 cpu’s. Is that blasphemy on this channel😆. Have 3 dl360’s gen 9 running. But I am looking at the DL325 / 345 / 385 gen10. Still steep on pricing though so I’ll wait a bit more. An msa iscsi storagebox would also be very nice to have.

I started my home lab many many years ago with HP, Gen 1, Gen2 (Server 2000 or NT I think) and a couple of Gen 3 (Server 2003), they are now all at the tip, daily server is now a DL380 gen 7, X5670 x 2, 72gb RAM and disks totalling 2TB (split RAID 5), running ESXi 6.7.0 (Build 8169922), it runs all my domain controllers (apart from 1 hosted elsewhere for downtime/reboots), WSUS, Exchange, DHCP, DNS, Certificate Authority and a few other test VM's, but I've also got Hyper-V running on my daily PC (Ryzen 9 3900X, 32gb ram, 2 x 2TB Samsung Pro Evo SSD and the difference between spinning rust and SSD VM's are worlds apart, I can run Patch Tuesday updates on 3 VM's on SSD's simultaneously and done in no time, 1 VM at a time unfortunately for the spinning rust, the older stuff still holds up well if you don't mind waiting around, my HP DL380 has been running for nearly 2 years (damn power outage) without missing a beat, great fun playing around with old enterprise stuff, thanks Morten 👍👍🙌🙌👍👍😎

Im just starting to play round with servers and virtualization, picked up an x3650 m4 and while looking for memory upgrades at the recycler there was a pair of x3500 m5 tower systems going to scrap which I quickly rescued. one works perfectly while the other seems to have an issue, it doesnt respond to keyboard input even after bios reset unfortunately, so if anybody can help there it would be much appreciated. I've learnt a lot and am really enjoying beingable to do virtual machines and putting all my data in one place.

Starting now i would not be looking at anything under a Xeon E3/E5 V2/V3/V4 for homelabs that want enterprise servers just to make sure of ongoing compatibility ,with power prices climbing the small amount saved with older kit will soon be spent on power and time wasted dealing with compatibility issues with hardware limits, more of a Dell user with R12th/13th gen servers

HP 2×360 G5, 360 G6, 380 G8 and 3 self build.

unused for several years. my cost wass simple I by 3 SSD drives and thats it. For my usege that solusion is very good.

Great video! They're all nice machines definitely, but with the cost of fuel and energy on the rise buying something that's newer and efficient would be a wise decision in the long run. I'd personally go at a minimum of the Model 4, with Ivy-Bridge processors installed, and the power profile being set to static low power. Sadly where I'm at though IBM/Lenovo machines that run Ivy-Bridge and newer are outrageous, and HPE is the only "cheap" option. Ended up with a damaged HPE DL380 Gen8 with dual E5-2680 V2s. Damaged sockets, some ram dimms don't work, but it runs. I regret not waiting to buy a Gen 9 instead but prices were insane at the time; $400 difference between the Gen8 and Gen9. Gen8 came configured with everything, Gen 9 was almost barebones.

I have a 3650M3 and owned it for about 3 years. It's been absolutely excellent. No drive compatibility that I have with Dell machines and managed to get the x16 riser for the graphics card. The main uses for it is to run my Plex and Roon server software under Linux Mint. It cost me £100, the riser was about £36 and the RAID expansion about £25. Along with that I have a couple of Dell R210Mk2's for my pfsense gateway and security system and a Dell R710. The 210 is a perfect machine for pfsense.
I'm also playing about with time sensitive networking based on a Microchip Timeprovider 4100 and a few of our switch evaluation platforms and can get to within 1ns of timing jitter on 1 pulse per second outputs with PTP and SyncE. I use the Dell to virtualise a demonstration so I don't have to cart the system around and use OpenVPN which is part of pfsense to connect back to the network.
You inspired my choice of the 3650 which was my first machine.

great video, but these xeons X5600-s and supported servers are very old, of 2011 era. i would go to dell PowerEdge R620($150-200) and E5-2640 v3($12), for example.
lenovo is now locking their amd ryzen/epyc CPUs to their motherboards in current-gen servers, so you cannot reuse the CPUs in other systems. take your business elsewhere, dont encourage this behavior.

Don't buy IBM servers. You won't be able to get firmware and BIOS update for them, unless you have a active service contract and login to IBM.
