Man Utd were on the back foot in the second half against Newcastle but produced an excellent defensive performance to claim all three points.
Ruben Amorim said Manchester United’s backs-to-the-wall win against Newcastle United was one of his best as Old Trafford boss after his injury-hit side held on to a valuable three points against the Magpies. United were down to the bare bones after losing Mason Mount at half-time and they had to hold on during a second-half onslaught to earn a 1-0 win that temporarily moved them into fifth in the Premier League.
Although United have produced more convincing performances under Amorim, the Portuguese head coach hailed it as one of his best wins during his 13 months in charge and insists the spirit they showed could be valuable in spreading belief through the squad.
Asked if the win was one of his most enjoyable, he said: “Yeah, especially if you see the second half, we managed to defend sometimes with a back six, but we suffer together, and that is a good feeling. I felt we are here talking about the game, and if we always have this spirit, we are going to win so many games. We need to feel we can win games without playing so well and win with spirit and togetherness.”
It was just a second clean sheet of the season and Amorim felt the luck was on United’s side against Newcastle when it has deserted them at other times this season. “The feeling is good but if you compare to other games we suffered so much more today, but in certain moments we put everything on the line,” he said. “We’re defending every cross, trying to push out the box, that is a good feeling to have but we had so many games we controlled much better and conceded a goal.”
