Max Verstappen says swearing punishment 'ridiculous' after Singapore Grand Prix news conference protest

His words are a reference to FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who triggered the controversy with an interview in which he said he wanted drivers not to swear in their cars.

The remarks, to Autosport magazine, related to the use of team radio in television and radio broadcasts. Transmissions are vetted and broadcast on delay and swear words are bleeped out.

Ben Sulayem’s comments annoyed the drivers, and it seems that Verstappen’s animated behaviour in Thursday’s official news conference was at least partly influenced by them.

He said he had support from his fellow drivers.

“Of course some speak out more than others,” Verstappen said, “but in general it is quite clear what everyone thinks.”

Ben Sulayem’s comments also seem to mark a retreat from a pledge he made early last year, when he said he would be taking a step back from direct involvement in F1.

In the interview, Ben Sulayem said that F1 had to “differentiate between our sport – motorsport – and rap music”, adding: “We’re not rappers, you know. They say the f-word how many times per minute? We are not on that. That’s them and we are [us].”

Hamilton accused Ben Sulayem of using “stereotypical” language with a “racial element”, saying: “If you think about it, most rappers are black.

“So when it says: ‘We are not like them’, those are the wrong choice of words.”

BMW PGA Championship: Matteo Manassero takes three-shot lead with 63

Italian Matteo Manassero shot a nine-under-par third round of 63 to take a three-shot lead into the final day of the BMW PGA Championship.

Manassero carded an eagle and seven birdies at Wentworth in Surrey to move to 18 under par, which is the lowest 54-hole score to par in the tournament’s history.

Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy produced a round of 66 to move into joint second on 15 under, along with American Billy Horschel (65).

“It was one of the best rounds I’ve ever played considering the conditions,” said Manassero, who won this tournament in 2013.

“The front nine it rained a lot and the course was playing soft but also long.

“There’s not too many birdies out there but I made the most of all I could. It was a fantastic round.”

He added: “I have seen the leaderboard and I know what I’m going to face on Sunday.

“It’s a great position to be in. It’s not going to be an easy task and golf today was great with me and we’ll see about tomorrow.”

McIlroy, like Manaserro, carded an eagle at the fourth hole, and he added to that with four birdies.

“I played well. Another solid day. My lowest score of the week, no bogeys,” said McIlroy.

“I was trying to keep up with Matteo as well. I know I’m going to need another low one on Sunday to try to catch him.”

England’s Matt Baldwin is on 14 under after a 71, while compatriot Aaron Rai moved to 12 under after a 66.

One of the most stunning dominations in recent boxing heavyweight history went down Saturday in front of 96,000 fans at Wembley in London, England when Daniel Dubois got the better of Anthony Joshua en route to a signature victory.

Dubois hurt Joshua early in the first round of the IBF title showdown, and the result seemed inevitable from there. Joshua attempted to keep pushing through multiple knockdowns, but then finally got put down and out for the final time in the fifth round of the headlining act.
