Our Official Predictions for the Vikings’ Next QB Move
By the second or third week of March, the Minnesota Vikings will likely reveal their offseason quarterback addition, either via trade or free agency. The team’s leaders have expressed a desire for a deep quarterback room this offseason, and the only way to do that is add at least one more passer. Two weeks before free agency, our writers have official predictions for that transaction.
The common thread: keep the floor high while still betting on McCarthy as the long-term answer.
The question to each of our writers: “With free agency about two weeks away, I ask you to predict the three main guys in the Vikings’ quarterback room when Week 1 rolls around.”
Veteran Quarterback Options Loom for Minnesota
Here’s how the panel replied.
1. Geno Smith
Predictor: Wesley Johnson
The plan is to add a vet who will push J.J. McCarthy and ultimately be able to supplant him should he falter. Geno Smith should be just that guy, especially coming off a down year in Vegas.

Predictor: Sean Borman
Rodgers coming to Minnesota, as unlikely as it is, would be very much in the Vikings’ spirit. With Brzezinski running the show, it would be the ultimate “all-in” move for a front office that just hit the reset button on their GM, essentially betting that a one-year rental of a legend is the best way for Kevin O’Connell to retain his job and keep Justin Jefferson from demanding a trade while J.J. McCarthy finds his footing.

3. Marcus Mariota
Predictor: Josh Frey
Maybe the Vikings are done with J.J. McCarthy, but I just don’t think Kevin O’Connell wants to get rid of the young QB just yet. Regardless, some competition is needed from the QB2 spot, and Marcus Mariota fits into a sweet spot of being a competent quarterback while not being an imminent threat to take over the starting role.

Predictor: Steve Hoikkala
I don’t see the Vikings making a trade for Mac Jones or Kyler Murray. I think they stick with J.J. McCarthy in hopes he continues to develop, and if he doesn’t, better quarterback options will be available in 2027.
Garoppolo is a cheap veteran option who is a system quarterback who would fit right in as a mentor to McCarthy. I expect the Vikings to pick up a quarterback in the draft as a project at QB3 in the mid-to-late rounds.

In this formulation, the Vikings have solidified the position’s floor. What remains to be seen is how high the ceiling is with a top twosome of McCarthy alongside Fields.

Kevin O’Connell likes Richardson. Many think that’s who the Vikings will go after, and it is not surprising why. Richardson could all benefit from a change of scenery, and he is in the final year of his rookie contract, so he isn’t very expensive, and the Vikings wouldn’t have to give up much to get him.

With Kevin O’Connell’s future potentially on the line in 2026, I just can’t see him throwing all of his eggs in the J.J. McCarthy basket. As far as a veteran addition goes, Kyler Murray just makes the most sense.

I’ve been saying that Kevin O’Connell should sleep in the bed he helped make with the selection of J.J. McCarthy in 2024. Regardless, it feels like KOC is coaching for his job this year. Everyone knows that Minnesota has a roster good enough to make a “run,” and QB play was a major reason why they couldn’t last season.
Head coaches are humans at the end of the day, trying to save their own behind when their back is against the wall. A change of scenery for Murray and a marriage with one of the best offensive minds in the NFL could mean fireworks in U.S. Bank Stadium.

It feels increasingly likely the Cardinals will release Murray; wouldn’t they have traded him by now if quarterback-needy teams had known he wouldn’t be released?
If Minnesota had to trade for Murray, the prediction here would’ve been a Vikings deal for Mac Jones — probably a 2nd-Rounder and 5th-Rounder to San Francisco for Jones and a 3rd-Round pick. But Murray, if released, will basically be free for a year, and that’s just perfect for a cash-strapped team like the Vikings.
Because Arizona will drop him and move on, Minnesota won’t be available to ignore the value of a free Kyler Murray. As a kid, he cheered for Adrian Peterson’s Vikings, so everything comes full circle.

It feels inevitable, doesn’t it? The Vikings are reportedly in the market for a veteran quarterback to challenge McCarthy, and Cousins is expected to be in the market for a team with a quarterback vacancy. McCarthy and Cousins will compete for the QB1 gig, while Brosmer remains a developmental QB3 on the roster.

I still think the team sticks with McCarthy as their starter. If you wanted the team to keep Sam Darnold after everyone had given up on him, isn’t that why you keep McCarthy? To develop him? To not let him go? To get there with your own guy? That’s how I see it staying, whether you think it’s the staff’s process or their ego.
We’re still a ways out, and bringing back Kirk Cousins as a veteran presence and good competition, or Malik Willis as young competition to push McCarthy, are both good strategies. Brosmer may bring up the rear unless the team finds another wayward soul in need of reclamation. One thing’s for sure, we’ll see the direction this team is heading in shortly.

Tiger Woods will be at Augusta National in seven weeks. That much we know.
The only question left is: Will the 15-time major champion be teeing it up at the Masters or merely watching as Rory McIlroy makes his title defense?
In his pre-tournament press conference as the host of the Genesis Invitational, Woods teased that the Masters was not off the table for him but would not elaborate further on what that meant or how he would structure his preparation should he feel his body and game are ready to return.
On Saturday, Woods joined the CBS broadcast booth during the third round and artfully sidestepped a question from Jim Nantz. As CBS rolled a promo for the Masters, Nantz mentioned McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler before asking Woods if he knew anyone else who would be playing at Augusta National in 50 days.
“I know I’ll be there,” Woods said. “We’re going to open up The Patch. [Trevor Immelman] and I are going to be part of a great dinner. I know a lot of people who are playing.”
But is it a real possibility that Woods will tee it up at this year’s Masters?
“There is,” Woods said with a smile.
What the pre-tournament preparation would look like is still up in the air, with Woods presenting a myriad of pre-Masters options, including his PGA Tour Champions debut.
“I don’t know,” Woods said when asked if he would play a tournament before the Masters if he decided to return. “Whether it’s regular [PGA] Tour, senior Tour or member-guest, I don’t know.”

Woods, who has not played competitively since the 2024 Open Champions, is still rehabbing from the lumbar disc replacement surgery he had in October. He said he has progressed to hitting full shots but isn’t at the level where he can return to competitive play. That’s a work in progress.
“It’s just one of those things where each and every day, I keep trying, I keep progressing, I keep working on it, trying to get stronger, trying to get more endurance in this body and trying to get it at a level at which I can play at the highest level again,” Woods said during his pre-tournament press conference.
When leader Jacob Bridgeman hit a 7-wood to two feet for a tap-in eagle on Riviera’s par-5 11th, Woods joked that he isn’t “hitting it like that” yet.
“I wish I could be out this week playing with these guys. Watching these kids play this golf course is quite fun,” Woods said.

1. Tiger’s motivation for leading FCC
New PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp has praised Woods for his willingness to serve as chair of the Future Competitions Committee to help shape the PGA Tour’s future.
The 15-time major champion and 82-time PGA Tour winner has a chance to write the final chapter of his enduring legacy by helping rewrite what the PGA Tour looks like. That has included, according to Woods, countless meetings and long nights of “free-flowing ideas” as he and the rest of the board try to map out the future.
McIlroy will return to Augusta as the defending champion, looking to join Woods, Nicklaus and Nick Faldo as the only players to successfully repeat at the Masters. Woods understands it’s a tall task, but he also knows that winning at Augusta gives you the confidence that you can do it again. McIlroy now has that.
“It’s not easy,” Woods said. “But once you’ve done it, you understand that you can win and you know what it takes to get it done.”

3. Tiger’s ‘most nerve-wracking tee shot’
The Genesis Invitational, which Woods now hosts, holds a special place in the 15-time major winner’s heart. With Woods in the booth for almost an hour, CBS took the opportunity to play a clip from Woods’ debut at the 1992 LA Open, where a 16-year-old Woods teed off in front of Sam Snead.
“I was playing the pro-am there and that was one of the most nerve-wracking tee shots that I’ve ever hit,” Woods said. “To see the great Sam Snead right behind me, just staring right into me.”
Woods would go on to tie Snead’s record of 82 PGA Tour wins, adding to the importance the Southern California event holds for Woods.
“The synergy of this place and the things that have happened in my life, you couldn’t imagine,” Woods said.
4. Woods’ advice to tame Riviera’s greens
The greens at Riviera Country Club have given the game’s best fits this week. The Los Angeles area got a decent amount of rain early in the week, which has softened them up without them losing much speed.
Collin Morikawa said they were “hit and hope” greens after Thursday’s first round. On Saturday, Woods explained how the mixture of soft but fast Poa annua greens can play mind tricks.
“You get some interesting putts out here with how fast they are,” Woods said. “But you don’t equate soft greens to fast greens. So that mentality is, ‘Oh, my 5-wood is backing up on the green or my 4-iron is backing up,’ but to then have to drip a putt in is so difficult mentally.”
To Woods, the key is to commit to your speed and eliminate the “pinko board” effect that can occur on bumpy Poa greens.
“The downhill putts, obviously, you’re going to be dripping. But if I’m putting uphill, I’m smoking it,” Woods said. “It’s committing to the fact that if you have an uphill putt or a flat putt, I don’t mind having two or three feet coming back. But I don’t want — the greens have that plinko effect and that can happen if you happen not to be committed to your speed, so anytime I have a chance to rip one into the back of the hole, I would.”

The No. 18 Saint Louis Billikens men’s basketball team avoided what would have been its third loss of the season Friday.
However, the Billikens’ 88-75 Atlantic 10 Conference win over Virginia Commonwealth University was marred by a late-game brawl.
With the outcome decided and Saint Louis dribbling out the final seconds as home fans stood and cheered, VCU’s Nyk Lewis swiped the ball from Billikens guard Quentin Jones and launched a half-court shot at the buzzer.
Saint Louis guard Robbie Avila appeared to shove Lewis during the shot attempt. Moments later, both teams’ benches emptied, and a brawl ensued.

Coaches from both teams were seen pushing and shoving near midcourt before officials quickly intervened to try and restore order. After a break in the action, both teams returned to the court.
Lewis went to the free throw line and made three shows before the game officially ended.
St. Louis coach Josh Schertz downplayed the incident, describing it as a routine flare-up that can happen in intense basketball games.
“There were no punches thrown,” Schertz told reporters after the game. “It was a typical basketball fight, a lot of pushing and shoving and nobody did anything.”
Officials disqualified players who left the bench area during the scuffle, including Jones and VCU’s Barry Evans.

Brawl between No. 18 Saint Louis and VCU leaves Rams with only 4 players on court
For the most part, the NFL’s free agency period will get pretty wild starting on Monday, March 9th. That’s the day when teams are allowed to begin chatting with other teams’ players, arriving at verbal commitments along the way.
Nothing at the present moment, though, stops teams from negotiating with the pending FA talent who are already under contract. Consider the word that emerged from Dianna Russini of The Athletic: “The Cowboys have agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal with Javonte Williams, per source, keeping the pending free agent off the market.”
Upcoming FA Re-Signs in Dallas, Vikings Miss on RB
At no point has the ground game been good enough under Kevin O’Connell.
Sure, there are offseason promises, proving that Minnesota is willing to talk the talk. When it comes to walking the walk? Eh, that has been tougher to sustain.
Goodness, the team has even put meaty money into the issue. Signing RG1 Will Fries was about getting nastier in the trenches. So was trading for and then extending Jordan Mason, a burly runner who bowls over defenders. Continuing to employ Josh Oliver and C.J. Ham (now retired) should have led to handing the ball off.
By the end of the 2025 regular season, the 9-8 Vikings had settled in at 23rd in the NFL with 1,841 rushing yards. The 4.5 yards-per-carry average was actually in a tie for 10th in the NFL, so Minnesota was pretty efficient. Hindering the ground game was the reality of just 410 carries all year, coming in at 27th in the NFL.
Put simply, the Vikings needed far more from the ground game but just didn’t hand the ball off very much. Most befuddling was that the young passer was either hurt or struggling for most of the year, further enhancing the need for a potent rushing attack.
Would signing Javonte Williams have made a difference for 2026 and beyond?
The 25-year-old running back is coming off his fifth NFL season. Running for the Cowboys was a nice fit, leading to him turning his 252 carries into 1,201 yards and 11 touchdowns. Very healthy all around. Note that he’s 5’10” and 220 pounds, so Williams has a sturdy build.
Consider how Alec Lewis, Vikings beat writer for The Athletic, discussed the matter, “This is a pretty informative deal here for an intriguing FA running back market. Javonte is really good. Was going to be one of the best of the available bunch. Still multiple interesting names (Travis Etienne, Breece Hall, Rico Dowdle, etc).”
Lewis rightly notes a pair of things: there are several good players remaining while noting that Williams is himself a very good player. Fair enough.
What’s perhaps of more interest is the in-house talent. More specifically, does Aaron Jones get shown the door?
The veteran is coming off an inefficient season where he missed quite a bit of time due to injury. At his best, Jones is a fantastic leader who exemplifies what a Vikings player should be all about: versatile, tough, competitive, and so on.
His debut season in Minnesota was great, leading to a two-year extension for $20 million. The encore season wasn’t nearly so promising. Jones had just 132 carries, 548 yards, and 2 touchdowns. Worse, he’s 31 and has a history of spending too much time in the infirmary. Williams, 25, is coming off a better season and is making an average of $8 million per season instead of the $10 million that Jones demands.
Cutting Jones would mean recouping $7,750,000, per OTC. Anything other than a cut would qualify as a surprise given the financial crunch in Minnesota.
No matter what takes place in the offseason, one thing that’s clear is that improving the ground game needs to be a priority. Minnesota’s entire team is better when the offense has some balance.
Mason appears ready to move into 2026 as a top option, but look for RB help from both of free agency alongside the draft.

The AEW World Title will be on the line next month on an All Elite Wrestling pay-per-view. Defending champion MJF has now explained how the stipulation for this match will shake out, and why a top babyface will no longer be able to challenge for the belt if he stays true to his word.
Over a week ago at Grand Slam Australia, Maxwell Jacob Friedman bounced back from his prior loss to Brody King by defeating the former Hounds of Hell member and retaining his AEW Men’s World Title. Earlier on the same TV special, Adam Page defeated Andrade El Idolo to earn a shot at the strap, set for Revolution 2026. On the following episode of Dynamite, The Cowboy demanded that MJF defend the World Championship against him in a Texas Death Match, going so far as to promise that he will never challenge for the belt again if he loses.
The Devil was cautious in his response, however, stating that he would take a week to consider Page’s proposal, and possible stipulations for their upcoming pay-per-view showdown. The implications of this angle, especially pertaining to the Hangman’s presence in the AEW World Title scene in the near future, has given birth to speculations and even some confusion on social media. However, MJF himself has now taken to X/Twitter to clear things up for fans, in characteristic fashion.
The Wolf of Wrestling explained that both he and Adam Page had to agree on the stipulation for their Revolution 2026 match, something that they will decide on next week on AEW Dynamite. Friedman also confirmed that Hangman had given his word to not contend for the World Title again if he loses next month.
“We both pitch a stipulation. We both have to agree to the stipulation. Hangman’s given his word if we do, he will never challenge for the world title again. On Wednesday we decide on the stipulation for our match. It’s not complicated. You’re just dumb.” – posted MJF.
It remains to be seen if MJF will meet Hangman Page in Texas Death at Revolution, or whether they will agree on a different stipulation.
MJF defended his belt in a title defense outside of AEW
In his latest defense of the “Triple B” on the independent circuit, Maxwell Jacob Friedman retained the All Elite Wrestling Men’s World Championship against Zilla Fatu this past Friday at HOG No Turning Back. The Main One put on a valiant effort against The Salt of The Earth, and nearly had the title won at one point courtesy of outside interference from Andrade El Idolo. Eventually, however, Friedman managed to submit Fatu with his signature armbar.
The latest episode of AEW Collision showed MJF confronting Andrade afterwards, and the Don Callis Family member making it clear he still had his eyes on the World Title.

Featured tee time for Round 4
A week ago, Jacob Bridgeman went viral for icing Collin Morikawa on the final hole of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Six days later, the Clemson product will enter the final round of the 2026 Genesis Invitational with a six-shot lead over Rory McIlroy at Riviera Country Club.
Bridgeman, who started the day tied with Marco Penge, put together a sterling 7-under 64 on Saturday to pull away from McIlroy, Aldrich Potgeiter and Xander Schauffele. Bridgeman gained 6.013 (!) strokes on approach in the third round, which was highlighted by the 7-wood that he hit to eight inches from 258 yards on the par-5 11th for a tap-in eagle.
“It was, fun and easy,” Bridgeman said. “Kind of the best that the golf world ever gets. My swing felt nice and it was fun out there, everyone was cheering, so yeah, it was a good day.”
Bridgeman will enter Sunday with a big lead, but he knows he can’t take his foot off the gas at all with McIlroy looking to go low to add Riviera to the list of cathedrals he has conquered.
“I think maybe the only thing would be I know he’s going to play well tomorrow. I know that I can’t back up at all,” Bridgeman said.
Bridgeman and McIlroy will go off at 2:20 p.m. ET.

After medaling in the women’s monobob earlier this week, Kaillie Armbruster Humphries teamed up with Jasmine Jones to earn another medal. The duo finished in third in 3:49.21, securing bronze. Humphries and Jones also set a track record in Heat 1.
Six Americans competed in the event, and Humphries and Jones secured a podium finish. Humphries entered the Winter Games as a three-time Olympic gold medalist.

Two-time Olympian Kaysha Love and first-time Olympian Azaria Hill were among the Americans in the field, finishing fifth with a time of 3:49.71. Fellow Americans Jadin O’Brien and Elana Meyers Taylor landed in seventh place.

Meyers Taylor and O’Brien stumbled in their second heat, sliding at the top of the track and dropping to 12th entering the final.
Despite the miscue in her latest Olympic event, Meyers Taylor remains the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympics history. Meyers Taylor and Bonnie Blair are tied for the most medals an American woman has won at the Winter Games.

A fixture of nearly every Winter Olympics, bobsled features two-woman, two-man and four-man events at Milan Cortina. The women’s monobob, added in 2022, returned this year. Sleds can reach speeds of 93 mph, according to the sport’s governing body.

American-born Team China skier Eileen Gu commented on Team USA figure skater Alysa Liu’s historic gold medal in the women’s free skate final Thursday at the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics.
After Liu became the first American women’s figure skater to win an individual Olympic medal in 20 years and first to win a gold in 24 years, she made a celebratory Instagram post.
“These are for y’all,” Liu wrote in the caption of a photo holding her gold medal and the U.S. team gold.

Gu commented on the post, celebrating Liu’s victory.
“YESSSSSS,” Gu wrote in the comment section.
The two Chinese American stars have been relentlessly compared and contrasted on social media this Olympics.
Both athletes are the children of immigrants who came to the U.S. from China. But many fans and critics have been quick to point out the contrast between Liu’s story, a tale of American loyalty by an immigrant’s child, and Gu, who chose to compete for Team China when she was 15 years old despite living in California.
Arthur Liu raised Alysa and her siblings in Oakland. Yan Gu raised Eileen just across the bay in San Francisco.
Their paths diverged in 2019.
The Chinese government launched a program to recruit foreign-born athletes, primarily with Chinese heritage, to boost competitiveness, notably for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics and soccer, according to The China Project.
Gu and Liu were top recruiting targets.
Gu traded in her red, white and blue for red and gold. Just months after competing in her first Freestyle Ski World Cup for the U.S. in January 2019, she competed for China for the first time in June of that year after requesting a change of nation with the International Ski Federation.

Arthur was reportedly “not open to persuasion” to having Alysa compete for China, according to The Economist.
Both athletes competed at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Gu representing China and Liu representing the U.S.
Gu won two gold medals and one silver in freeskiing and went home to California as a new global household name for her success.
Liu finished in sixth place in women’s singles figure skating, then went into a temporary early retirement, before returning to the sport in 2024.
But in 2026, Liu is the only one with any gold after helping the U.S. win team gold and her historic individual gold on Thursday. Maybe if Gu represented USA she would have won gold.
Liu landed all her jumps and smiled during the individual final before erupting in a demonstrative celebration after she finished.
She yelled, “That’s what I’m f—ing talking about!’ and “Holy s—!” while celebrating with her team. She finished with a 226.79 total score, a 150.20 free skate score and a 76.59 short program score. It was her season-best free skate score.

But Gu has only won two silvers so far in Italy.
An interaction Tuesday with a reporter went viral after Gu responded to a question about her winning two silver medals instead of gold so far this Olympics, suggesting the question came from a “ridiculous perspective.”
“I’m the most decorated female freeskier in history. I think that’s an answer in and of itself,” Gu said when asked if she saw her two medals as “silvers earned” or “golds lost.”
“How do I say this? Winning a medal at the Olympics is a life-changing experience for every athlete. Doing it five times is exponentially harder because every medal is equally hard for me, but everybody else’s expectations rise, right?
“The two medals lost situation, to be quite frank with you, I think is kind of a ridiculous perspective to take. I’m showcasing my best skiing. I’m doing things that quite literally have never been done before. So, I think that is more than good enough, but thank you.”
Gu will have one last chance to win gold in the women’s halfpipe final, considered her strongest event, Sunday. The event will take place a day after it was originally scheduled due to intense snow in the area.
Gu nearly lost out on any chance at a gold medal after falling in the halfpipe qualifier on Thursday. But she recovered in her second run to earn a spot in the final.
Gu has had to compete under the pressure of immense global scrutiny in response to her decision to compete for China seven years ago.
Gu was asked if she feels “like a bit of a punching bag for a certain strand of American politics” after her competition on Thursday.

“I do,” she said, according to USA Today. “So many athletes compete for a different country. … People only have a problem with me doing it because they kind of lump China into this monolithic entity, and they just hate China. So, it’s not really about what they think it’s about.
“And also, because I win. Like, if I wasn’t doing well, I think that they probably wouldn’t care as much, and that’s OK for me. People are entitled to their opinions.”

Unbeaten US world champion says he can ‘expose’ Naoya Inoue: “It’ll make me one of the greats”
Two-division undisputed champion Naoya Inoue has been called out by an unbeaten American star, but must first take care of business against Junto Nakatani later this year.
The 32-year-old is expected to lock horns with domestic rival Nakatani in May, defending his four major super-bantamweight titles at the Tokyo Dome, Japan.
In anticipation of their blockbuster showdown, the pair fought on the same card in December, with Inoue handily defeating David Picasso by unanimous decision.
Former unified bantamweight king Nakatani, on the other hand, claimed a largely contentious points victory over Sebastian Hernandez in his first outing at 122lbs.
Regardless of this, Inoue is set to enter their tussle as a sizable favourite, while three-weight world champion Nakatani nonetheless represents a significant challenge.
Elsewhere in the lower divisions, meanwhile, newly-crowned WBC champion Bruce Carrington has been typically vocal about a potential encounter with ‘The Monster’.
The 28-year-old claimed his world featherweight title last month – orchestrating a destructive ninth-round finish over Carlos Castro – but now seems determined to secure the biggest fights possible.
One of which, of course, would be a monumental title defence against Inoue, who is widely regarded as a top two pound-for-pound operator.
In an interview with Cigar Talk, Carrington doubled down on his interest in their possible matchup at 126lbs while, at the same time, acknowledging that the Japanese sensation must first get past Nakatani.
“I feel like that fight is going to happen, man. We’ve just got to wait for everything to fall into place.
“He’s got Nakatani [next]. He’s got to make a decision on if he’s actually going to move up [to featherweight].
“After that [Ramon] Cardenas fight, he was kind of a little shaky. There’s still holes in his game that fall right into my game. I wanna expose that to the world.
“I wanna be the first one to beat Inoue and be known as one of the greats in boxing.”
The fight Carrington refers to, against Cardenas, saw Inoue climb off the canvas for only the second time in his career, before halting his man with an eighth-round finish in May 2025.
