The blaze erupted in Glasgow city centre this evening causing disruption for residents, local businesses, and passers-by.
Everything you need to know about the Glasgow city centre fire
- Fire crews are currently in attendance near the House of Gods hotel in Glasgow after a huge blaze broke out earlier this evening.
- A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We received a report by 999 call around 6.18pm. There are 11 appliances in attendance. The incident is ongoing.”
- Flames and smoke has been spotted billowing out from the building roof on Glassford Street. It is not known at this stage if anyone has been injured as a result of the blaze.
- Firefighters were called to the scene near the popular hotel in the city centre at around 6.18pm. Eleven appliances were sent to the scene to put out the flames.
- A number of buildings close to the fire have been evacuated as a precaution. The Trades Hall, House of Gods, Spires Serviced Suites and Homeless Project Scotland have all been evacuated as a result of the huge blaze.
- Ian Diamond, of Bigglestones Books, a book shop located nearby, said: “Several LGBTQ businesses will be very badly affected by this fire… House of Gods and nearby homeless shelter are in real danger. Staff, performers, and punters are wondering what this means for their livelihood and historic safe space.”
- Glassford Street in Glasgow has been shut due to the fire. In a statement, Glasgow City Council urged road users to avoid the road while fire crews battle the flames.
- ScotRail said services through Argyle Street and High Street stations have not been impacted by the event.
