The 29-year-old – who is set to return to the ring next month – made a huge life decision to team up with legendary trainer Buddy McGirt over in America

Jordan Flynn has confidently asserted he would travel to the moon if it made him a better fighter.

The 29-year-old took a long, hard look at himself in the mirror after suffering the first defeat of his professional career to Cameron Vuong back in March. Having spent a few weeks pondering about his future, Flynn made the decision to switch teams and start from scratch.

Back in May, he revealed his decision to team up with Hall of Fame trainer Buddy McGirt in a bid to get his career on track. It was a major family decision for Flynn, though, deciding to make a huge jump and move across the pond. After linking up with McGirt in Florida, the move paid dividends straight away.

Flynn scored a vicious knockout victory over Mihail Burlac in his return fight back in September before a routine points win against Jorge Luis Huerta earlier this month. The decision to fight merely weeks before his upcoming grudge match with Aqib Fiaz was tactical and always part of the plan.

Reflecting on the defeat to Vuong, Flynn admitted to Mirror Fighting: “From that fight, I learned that I needed to make some changes. I needed to focus more and change my training team. And that is why I teamed up with Buddy McGirt – one of the best trainers in the game, and he has improved my game massively in such a short time and I am looking forward now to this fight against Aqib and showing off the differences.”

A lot of fighters would refuse to make that big of a commitment, leaving everything behind and moving countries, but it was an opportunity too good to turn down for the Brit. “I knew that whatever I needed to do in my life…. If would want to be the best at it, you have to make these sacrifices. So, going over to the States was not a big sacrifice.

“I will go wherever. If I need to go to the moon to get better, I will go there. So, anything that is going to help me improve my career, I am going to do it. I quite like it in America, it’s nice. And the good thing is, you can just focus on boxing and get away from all the distractions. You do not even think about the fight, you are just focusing on training everyday, waking up in nice weather.”

Ever since Flynn’s return against Fiaz was announced, the pair have thrown verbal jabs at each other – which makes for a good fight on January 24. Discussing where their animosity stemmed from, Flynn said: “We actually kind of got on. We were kind of friends. Not like meet up and stuff. He was in the same camp as Cameron Vuong, my former opponent. He was just getting too involved in that situation, like posting things and I thought ‘who is this guy!’ It kind of went from there, I think I kind of just got a bit of a dislike towards him. I would not say I dislike him properly. It’s always been a fight that I believe I win and beat him well. So, when I called for the fight, it got made straight away, and it’s a fight that I would love and it’s a fight that I have got and I am excited for it.”

The British fighter still relives the fight with Fiaz’s good friend Vuong in his mind and hopes to secure a sequel in the near future, stating: “Definitely I want that rematch at some point down the line. 100 per cent and I still believe I beat him, even after being in the ring with him. I believe that I beat him. But obviously I am fighting at super-featherweight. For now, I am campaigning at super-featherweight, but I would love to avenge that loss at some point.”
