EFL Trophy: Birmingham City hit seven past Fulham U21s
Jay Stansfield and Ayumu Yokoyama both scored twice as Birmingham City progressed in the EFL Trophy with a 7-1 win over Fulham Under-21s.
Alfie May, Keshi Anderson and Lyndon Dykes also got in on the act as the Blues really turned up the heat on their visitors in the second half, despite Martial Godo initially levelling.
Doncaster Rovers secured their progression to the knockout stages of the competition after beating Barnsley 3-1 at the Eco-Power Stadium.
Second-half goals from Joe Ironside and Harry Clifton put the hosts in control before Aiden Marsh halved the deficit. Kyle Hunt made sure of the win six minutes from time.
Exeter City maintained their 100% record to progress from Group O with a 3-2 win over Bristol Rovers thanks to goals from Jay Bird, Millenic Alli and Demetri Mitchell. Connor Taylor and Isaac Hutchinson were on the scoresheet for Rovers.
AFC Wimbledon are also through despite a 3-0 defeat at home by Brighton and Hove Albion U21s, who took the win thanks to second half strikes from Caylan Vickers, Cameron Peupion and Remeiro Moulton.
Manchester City U21s were the only top-flight youth side to come out on top, as they beat Grimsby Town 5-4 on penalties after goals from Reigan Heskey and Danny Rose in the final few minutes could not separate the sides.
There were comprehensive victories for both Mansfield Town and Cheltenham Town, who beat Newcastle United and West Ham United U21s 3-0 and 3-2 respectively.
Lucas Aikins and Ben Quinn, who scored twice, helped Mansfield to victory, while Liam Dulson, Matt Taylor and Tom King scored for Cheltenham, with Kamarai Simon-Swyer grabbing a consolation for the Hammers.
Miles Leaburn scored in each half to help Charlton Athletic take a huge step towards progression with a 3-0 win over Chelsea Under-21s, before Tyreece Campbell added a third in stoppage time.
Accrington Stanley celebrated a narrow 2-1 win over Everton U21s, with goals courtesy of Charlie Jay Whittaker and Josh Woods either side of Harrison Armstrong’s leveller.

Mistakes remain but England friendlies valuable – Sarina Wiegman
There was plenty of change against South Africa, as promised by Wiegman this week, and she said it led to some of the sloppiness on show.
England were caught out on numerous occasions at the back, with not just Williamson making errors.
“We swapped players in different positions so that’s not easy to adapt to and to get the right connections,” said Wiegman.
“Maya le Tissier moved from the right side to the left side and Ella Toone came into a different position [in midfield]. That needs some time.
“I saw some struggles so we have to get through that and try to take the sloppiness out.
“We want to keep playing forward and getting better connected with players in different positions. I ask a lot from them.”
Earlier this week, Wiegman said England needed to deal with criticism as expectations have grown around her side.
As well as claiming the Euro 2022 crown on home soil, they reached the Women’s World Cup final in 2023.
While these two friendly performances did not assure supporters they will be up to scratch when Euro 2025 kicks off next July, there is certainly no need to panic.
England have two more friendlies this year against Olympic gold medallists the United States – managed by former Chelsea boss Emma Hayes – and Euro 2025 hosts Switzerland on 30 November and 3 December respectively.
Wiegman insists she wants to use these matches to “gain information” that will help them at Euro 2025, and has been pleased with what she has gathered so far.
“I think we still have more questions, but that was what we said to each other before this camp. We don’t need to have all the answers now,” said Wiegman.
“We have two more games [this year] and we’re just trying to get as much information as possible. We want to see more players.
“Some players have to be a little more patient than others but we are moving forward and we need these games to try out different things to be better later on.
“We put players in other positions that we wanted to see [against South Africa]. This is the moment to do that.
“Some things I was really happy with, and in other moments, of course, we can improve.”

Aberdeen’s Jimmy Thelin reveals Sir Alex Ferguson chat about leadership
“We talked a little bit about the game we played there and about living in Aberdeen and how his time was here.”
Ferguson won a raft of major trophies – including the 1983 European Cup-Winners’ Cup – during a glittering eight years in charge at Aberdeen.
He left Pittodrie in 1986, going on to amass plenty more silverware at home and abroad with Manchester United, whom he managed for 27 years.
However, the 82-year-old recently lost his ambassador role at Old Trafford.
“We only talked about football generally,” Thelin said as he prepared for Wednesday’s high-profile visit by third-top Rangers, for whom Ferguson was a striker.
Describing the Scot as “the top man” for what he did for Aberdeen, Thelin said they chatted about “how he can reinvent himself so many times” as a manager over the years.
“We talked about how it was to live here and he wished me luck,” he added. “I was really young when he was here and he went to United.
“It was more not about the tactical things, more about leadership, how you can for such a long time at two clubs be inspirational to new players and try to keep going.
“That is the thing you try to do yourself when you are a coach is to be consistent.”

Muslim footballer stopped from playing in tracksuit bottoms
A football coach and refugee advocate was prevented from playing in a match because she wears tracksuit bottoms rather than shorts, which she says compromises her religious beliefs.
Iqra Ismail, who captained Somalia in 2019 and established Hilltop FC, said the issue arose when she signed for Regent’s Park grassroots team United Dragons FC.
The 24-year-old from west London was expected to play her first game on Sunday against an east London team.
“I was warmed up, I was ready to go. I came on at half time and the referee told me that I wouldn’t be able to play unless I was wearing shorts,” she said.
“I have been playing the same league for nearly five years wearing the same tracksuit bottoms and I’ve never worn shorts playing competitively.
“I told him that I wasn’t comfortable wearing shorts in any capacity.
“It was a shock to me that the referee took such a strong stance of it.
“I was very visibly upset as the game was going on, my teammates and the manager were very supportive. Everyone has been devastated.”
Ms Ismail, who has played football since she was eight, said she has always worn a long sleeve top, the team’s shirt, a sports hijab and tracksuit bottoms as well as shin pads and other necessary equipment.
“I know a lot of women [of the same faith and beliefs] who don’t play actively in these leagues, even though they are very capable of doing so, because they don’t feel comfortable wearing shorts. That’s the reason they do not play.”
She said it was the tracksuit bottoms that were the problem, not the long sleeve top.
The Greater London Women’s Football League, of which United Dragons FC is a member, appears to be in contravention of the guidance given by the Football Association (FA) instructing to be lenient regarding the issue, but official FA rules state that tracksuit bottoms are only to be worn by the goalkeeper.
“The FA communicated to them that if players wear additional garments because of their religious beliefs, they should be allowed to play,” Ms Ismail said.
‘A safe space’
A later communication issued by the Greater London Women’s Football League confirmed players must not wear tracksuit bottoms.
Ms Ismail said while working as a coach she tried to give the league guidance on the issue, referencing the FA’s advice about leniency – but she was met with a reference to a specific clause in the kit rules.
“For some reason they have decided not to budge.
“Tape or undershirt being the right colour – the referees don’t pull anyone up on that.
“It’s been one step forward and two steps back with this issue.
“In the past few years, I’ve been advocating for Muslim women to have a safe space in the game.”
“For example, we hosted a women-only alcohol-free viewing of the FA cup final, for Muslim women to feel comfortable and included.
“It’s been difficult to see the hard work that a lot of us have put in start to be undone by incidents like this.”
Ms Ismail says she hopes to back on the pitch soon, and is working with the FA and with the league to change the rules, with a longer term plan to work with the International Football Association Board to change the rules on an international scale.
“Your religious principles and what you’re comfortable have to take precedence.
“People say when you’re on the pitch, you’re a player, but I believe you should be able to bring your culture and your identity with you, yes it’s a personal act of defiance, but it’s so much bigger than just me.”
A spokesperson from the FA said: “We are aware of this matter and we are in contact with Middlesex FA to ensure that it is quickly resolved.
“We proactively wrote to all county FAs and match officials across the women’s grassroots game earlier this year to confirm that women and girls should be allowed to wear clothing that ensures their faith or religious beliefs are not compromised. We remain deeply committed to ensuring that English football is an inclusive and welcoming environment for everybody.”
The FA confirmed that they were in contact with Ms Ismail directly to provide support and to assure that they were working to resolve the matter.
