Rick And Morty Turned A Community Episode Into Its Most Shockingly Heartfelt Story
By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

Rick and Morty is one of those shows that even if you’ve never seen a single episode, you’ve seen the memes: Pickle Rick, “20 minute adventure, quick in and out,” “What is my purpose?” It’s a show packed with jokes that range from the absurd to the multilayered, which makes sense since it shares a creator, Dan Harmon, with the equally acclaimed comedy Community.
Harmon explained in an interview with The Independent that Season 4’s “The Old Man and the Seat” was originally a plot for Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) about shy pooping. True to the spirit of the absurd sci-fi series, the original concept ended up attached to a take on Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea, featuring one of the cartoon’s most heartfelt and emotional endings to date.
The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Shy Pooper

The Season 4 Rick and Morty episode starts with the reappearance of the butter-passing robot at breakfast, when Rick (voiced by Justin Roiland back then) announces he has to go. Summer (Spencer Grammer) explains to everyone that her grandfather’s a shy pooper, and she’s right. Rick uses his portal gun and works his way to a toilet overlooking a cliff on a picturesque alien world with no other humanoids for hundreds of miles, if not even further. Once he’s done, Rick notices a broken branch, which sets off a manhunt for whoever intruded on his poop sanctuary.
Turns out that an alien named Tony (Jeffrey Wright) found the isolated toilet and started using it, since he’s also a shy pooper. Rick responds in his usual way, by building a giant robotic Rick mech to sit on Tony when he uses the toilet and then putting Tony in a vat of red goo that shows him his ideal version of Heaven (complete with his dead wife). Tony’s shocked, wondering why Rick can build a virtual Heaven but isn’t able to share a toilet?

The question hits Rick like a ton of bricks and succinctly sums up the smartest man in existence. Soon after, Tony dies in a skiing accident from “living his life to the fullest” and Rick goes to use the toilet, revealing he rigged a series of holograms and a speech about how Tony is sitting there, all alone, because no one wants to be around him. It’s not subtle; it’s clearly Rick coming to terms with his own sense of loneliness and how Tony, against all odds, seemed like he legitimately wanted to be his friend. Rick sitting on his toilet, all alone, taunted by his own prank, hits even harder after his loneliness and lack of connection became a major part of the last two seasons.
Rick And Morty Manages To Be Both Very Stupid And Very Smart

“The Old Man and the Seat” wrings the most emotion possible out of a storyline about pooping, but then there’s the other half of the episode. Jerry (Chris Parnell) agrees to develop an app for Rick’s assistant, Glootie (Taika Waititi, no, seriously), which turns out to be a dating app designed to distract the humans while aliens steal Earth’s resources. This is explained by the Monogtron Leader (Sam Neil, and yes, Rick and Morty has surprising stars drop by for cameos) and his Queen (Kathleen Turner, see the prior parentheses), until it all goes crashing down with the addition of a pay wall.

Normally, the thought of a simple pay wall turning a wildly successful app into an instant disaster would be the highlight of an episode, but “The Old Man and the Seat” is all about Rick coming face-to-face with his own loneliness. The B-plot doesn’t matter, even if it has some good moments, notably Summer’s soul mate constantly changing, though it does raise the question of how a shy pooping storyline would have been handled on Community. Dan Harmon could never quite get it to work, but by leaning into Rick’s self-induced loneliness, he managed to turn shy pooping into an episode that was true to the character and revealed new depths to his narcissistic nihilism. Rick and Morty isn’t Shakespeare, but it gets close.

Kate Hudson Was ‘So Happy’ She Didn’t Have Her Famous Mother’s Last Name
Kate Hudson is insisting that she did not grow up as privileged as people might think, despite being the daughter of Hollywood star Goldie Hawn and musician Bill Hudson.
The actress claimed during a recent podcast appearance that her parents never handed anything to her or her brother, Oliver.
According to Kate Hudson, unlike the kids she saw in Los Angeles in her younger years, she didn’t “coast by” with parents who assisted them with “everything.”

Kate Hudson On Her ‘Privileged’ Childhood And Lessons In Hard Work With Goldie Hawn

Kate Hudson has opened up about growing up amid Hollywood privilege while being raised by parents who valued hard work over entitlement.
Though her biological father is musician Bill Hudson, who was married to Goldie Hawn from 1976 to 1982, the actress and her brother Oliver were largely raised by Hawn and her long-time partner Kurt Russell, 74. Hudson has often described Russell as the father figure in her life.
On a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Hudson reflected on her upbringing, recalling how her parents were firm about one principle: nothing would be handed to her.
“I grew up in L.A., where I saw kids coast by with parents who gave them everything,” she said, per Fox News Digital. “And I had the opposite parents.”

“We were clearly privileged kids,” she admitted, “but I do think that my parents were so adamant about how none of it belonged to us, like that we didn’t earn it, that in order to get a life like the one we were living, we had to earn it ourselves.”
“That it would never be available to us unless we had the same kind of work ethic,” Hudson added.

The Actress Recalls Seeing Her Peers Get Cars From Their Parents As Kids

Returning to Los Angeles for high school after her family moved to the outskirts of Aspen, Colorado, when she was young, Hudson attended the exclusive Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences in Santa Monica.
At her school, she saw the stark contrast between her upbringing and that of some of her peers.
The actress remembered classmates receiving luxury cars and gifts, while her parents emphasized discipline and effort over material rewards.
“You grow up, and you see kids get cars that you’re like, whoa. We were the kids — and we’re privileged — and we’re like, ‘Wow, I can’t believe their parents bought them a new car,” she recalled.

Kate Hudson Says She Was Happy Her Last Name Wasn’t Hawn Or Russell

Both Hudson and Oliver eventually followed careers in acting, with the “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” actress admitting she took what her parents taught her “to heart.”
“For me, I really took that to heart. I was like, ‘No, I can’t — I will never rely on my parents,’” she said.
The actress continued, “And that was my big thing. I will never take a job because of them. I won’t. I don’t want anybody knowing they’re my parents. When I first started, I was so happy my last name was Hudson. It was really, really important to me.”
Hudson credits her parents for instilling a strong work ethic that shaped her career. “If you really want to do this, if you really want to act, you have to put in the discipline,” she reflected.

The Actress Shined On The Red Carpet At 2026 BAFTAs After An Oscar Nomination

Hudson drew attention once again as she arrived at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards in London, turning heads in a stunning red silk gown.
The 46-year-old “Song Sung Blue” star radiated old Hollywood glamour in the strapless Prada ensemble, featuring a cinched waist that highlighted her slender figure. She complemented the look with delicate jewelry, including a standout diamond choker.
In high spirits on the red carpet, Hudson’s radiant smile matched the excitement of the evening. Her nomination for Best Leading Actress at the BAFTAs echoes her recent Oscar nod, marking 25 years since her first recognition in the same category.
This year, she faces competition from Jessie Buckley, Rose Byrne, Chase Infiniti, Renata Reinsve, and Emma Stone.
Kate Hudson Honored With Spotlight Award At Costume Designers Guild Awards

Earlier in February, Hudson attended the 28th Costume Designers Guild Awards at the Ebell in Los Angeles, where she was honored with the Spotlight Award.
The accolade recognizes actors whose careers reflect a lasting dedication to excellence and a strong appreciation for the art of costume design.
Speaking with Fox News Digital on the red carpet, Hudson shared what advice she might give her younger self.
“I think giving advice to my younger self would be like discounting all of the decisions that I made that were also like good decisions — even the mistakes and the ones that were challenging decisions that I made formed everything for who I am right now, so I wouldn’t go back and do anything different,” she said.

Still, reflecting on her career and her many memorable fashion moments on-screen, Hudson admitted to one small regret.
“You asked what I would do different and I was gonna say, I’d keep more clothes!” the actress joked.

Gerry Turner and Lana Sutton’s Sweet Romance Timeline
Gerry Turner has a new love in his life post The Golden Bachelor, and he’s no longer keeping her under wraps.
After teasing their relationship for weeks, Gerry shared the identity of his girlfriend in an interview with TMZ in April 2025 — a year after his divorce from Golden Bachelor winner Theresa Nist.
Gerry said he met retired teacher Lana Sutton when she slid into his DMs. While he ignored her first message, Lana’s second attempt got his attention when she shared that she grew up in an Indiana town 20 minutes from him. He told TMZ that Lana is in her mid-50s and a former part-owner of a video production company.
He also shared photos of Lana on Instagram, writing, “I can’t believe how many people in Charleston recognized us and wished us the best.”
Bachelor Nation flocked to the comments, including Gerry’s past love interests Faith Martin and Susan Noles. “Awh so happy for you both!!❤️,” Faith wrote, with Susan adding, “So happy for you.”
Theresa, for her part, told Us Weekly that Gerry let her know about Lana prior to making the relationship public knowledge. “He said, ‘I just wanna let you know I met someone.’ I said, ‘That’s wonderful. I’m so happy for you.’ He goes, ‘I was afraid to tell you.’ ‘Why would you be afraid? I only want your happiness.’ Like, if this was the way it happened for him to find his person to go on the show, get married, and then find his person this way, then it was meant to be,” Nist told Us.
Keep scrolling for more on Gerry’s romance with Lana:
March 2025

Gerry said he took Lana to a restaurant on their first date in March and that they’ve been inseparable since. In an interview with TMZ the following month, he confirmed she’s met his kids and pickleball pals while he’s met a couple of her kids and her parents.
April 2025

Gerry revealed he was dating someone new on an episode of the “Bachelor Happy Hour” podcast.
“I am dating someone,” he said. “I think at this point it’s going well. But I don’t want to say too much and jinx it and I’m trying to respectfully get to a point where there’s an acceptable amount of time from my divorce. Maybe that’s an old fashioned thought — maybe it doesn’t matter as much as I think it does, but to be respectful, I kind of want to slow roll this.”
Gerry said he and the then-unnamed Lana bonded over their children and love of travel.
“The person I’m dating will say, ‘Do you want to go do?’ And before she gets out the rest of the sentence I will say, ‘Yes,’” Turner said, noting that he was instantly attracted to her.
“I hate to say it because I know I’m going to get baseballs thrown at me. It was almost the first time I saw her. It was the look that she gave me. It was like, all of a sudden, I was consumed by this look and I had this actual physical feeling and I pushed it off. I go, ‘That was silly, that’s ridiculous.’ And with every encounter that feeling has instantly come back with her look and it’s like, ‘Damn, this is pretty awesome,’” he said.

A few days after his “Bachelor Happy Hour” interview, Gerry revealed his girlfriend was indeed Lana during an interview with TMZ.
After revealing Lana’s identity, Gerry posted some photos via Instagram with the caption, “I can’t believe how many people in Charleston recognized us and wished us the best.”
Lana also shared some of the photos via her own Instagram, writing, “A couple memories from our first getaway to Charleston!”
April 2025

Gerry told People marriage could be a possibility for him and Lana.
He told the outlet he doesn’t know “that either of us necessarily would be looking to get married, but we’ve also said that’s not off the table.”
The pair have both been married twice, with Turner previously tying the knot with late wife Toni and saying “I do” with Theresa after getting engaged on The Golden Bachelor season 1. Turner, added that a “serious discussion” about exchanging vows is “down the road a bit.”
“But I do think we’ve both come to the comfortable agreement that we both want a long-term committed permanent relationship, and I think we’re both feeling like we’re there that we’re in that now,” he said. “It’s kind of two different things, but they are closely related.”
May 2025

Gerry, who was diagnosed with an incurable cancer in 2024, shared a carousel of photos of his and Lana’s recent travels via Instagram, writing, “The past two months have been an absolute blast — travel, adventure, and quality time with two families. Feeling grateful to have met such a kind-hearted woman. What a partner!”
He told People that they plan to travel to London and Paris this summer.
“We’ve been together every weekend,” Turner said. “She’s retired, so she’s not tied down. On a moment’s notice, she could come here or if I go there. There’s no encumbrances with work, so there’s just an awful lot of pluses that are helping us along.”
October 2025
Gerry proposed to Lana after less than one year of dating.
“We’ve got BIG news. The Golden Bachelor is OFF the market,” he wrote via Instagram. “I found my perfect match and she said ‘YES.’ I love this woman.”
February 2026
Turner shared in February 2026 that he and Sutton found their “perfect home.”
“Ther[e] have been many great days over the last 12 months traveling, bonding families, building a loving and fun relationship with Lana,” he wrote via Instagram, alongside photos of the twosome in front of a home. “But yesterday was one of the very best. Finding our perfect home was an arduous journey. So gratifying to close on our new home together.”

How Team USA Hockey Felt Johnny Gaudreau’s Presence in Gold Medal Game
The Team USA men’s hockey team felt Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau’s spirits when they took home the gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
“Johnny and Matty should be here and that is still the biggest loss that all of us at USA hockey, their families [and] our family, has gone through,” Dylan Larkin told reporters after the Sunday, February 22, gold medal game. “Johnny [is] family first.”
Team USA beat Team Canada 2-1 in a sudden-death overtime win on Sunday, the American squad’s first gold medal victory since 1980’s famed “Miracle on Ice.”
“I think part of the puck not going in our net was somehow, that he’s standing there doing something,” Larkin, 29, said, adding that he pictures Johnny and Matthew laughing as they “just somehow they put a spell around [the Team USA] net where that puck didn’t go in.”
Johnny and his brother, Matthew Gaudreau, were struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver while biking in New Jersey in August 2024, just days before their sister Katie Gaudreau’s wedding. The brothers were 31 and 29, respectively.
The siblings are survived by their parents, two sisters and respective wives and children. Matthew was married to Madeline Gaudreau, with whom he shared son Tripp. Johnny, for his part, is survived by his wife, Meredith Gaudreau, and their three children.
Meredith attended the gold medal game with her kids and in-laws.
“You should be here, John, and I’m so sorry you aren’t,” Johnny’s widow wrote via her Instagram Stories on Friday, February 20. “So proud of you and your legacy.”

As Team USA celebrated their victory, they held up an Olympics jersey with Johnny’s last name and invited his kids Noa, 3, and Johnny Jr., 2, onto the ice to celebrate with the team. (Johnny and Meredith also shared son Carter, who was born in April 2025.)
Larkin, for his part, told reporters that “just felt right” to invite Johnny’s kids onto the ice.
The Olympic victory also coincided with Johnny Jr.’s birthday.
“2-22 is baby Johnny’s birthday!! Special date picked by his daddy due to travel at the time,” Meredith wrote via Instagram on Saturday, February 21. “Happy 2nd birthday to our baby Johnny boy! We love you so much. I am so proud of you. Couldn’t think of a better way to spend your 2nd birthday than for a fun day tomorrow.”
Johnny’s mom, Jane Gaudreau, subsequently responded in the comments section.
“Happy Birthday Baby Johnny! Mom-Mom & Pop-Pop love you so much and we can’t wait to spend the day with you,” Jane wrote. “Love you to the moon and back!”
Johnny was a forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets and had ambitions to represent Team USA at the Olympics ahead of his death.
“He was determined to earn his spot on that Olympic roster,” the Gaudreau family wrote in a social media statement earlier this month. “While it breaks our hearts that John won’t be there to live out that dream, we know he will be so very present with Team USA and all of his close friends competing throughout these games. Though the Olympics will be bittersweet for our family, we find comfort knowing that in the hearts of his teammates, friends, and everyone who loved watching him play, John will be right there.”

Katherine Heigl Mourns Grey’s Anatomy Costar Eric Dane After Death at 53
Katherine Heigl will never forget her former Grey’s Anatomy costar Eric Dane after his tragic death at 53.
“I debated this post for days. I have never been comfortable grieving publicly,” Heigl, 47, wrote via Instagram on Sunday, February 22. “I share my tears, my stories and my memories with those I’m closest to and, more times than not, I share them only with the heavens alone. But that silence can often look like a lack of care which I could not abide here.”
She continued, “Rebecca, Billie, Georgia … There is so little, if in fact anything, one can say about a tragic loss like yours. All the ‘I’m sorries’ and ‘my prayers are with you’ ring a bit hollow in the midst of so much pain and grief.”
Us Weekly confirmed on Thursday, February 19, that Dane died after a battle with ALS. He is survived by his two daughters, whom he shared with Rebecca Gayheart.
“I will say the only thing that has ever brought me peace when I’ve lost someone I love,” Heigl wrote in her social media tribute. “It is Robert Frost’s poem ‘Nothing Gold Can Stay,’ of which I have tattooed on my body in my parent’s handwriting, so I will never forget that the moment of gold was worth it. ‘Nature’s first green is gold, her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf’s a flower; but only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, so Dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.’”
Heigl further revealed that Dane was akin to “gold” in the 1923 poem.
“I will never forget Eric’s gold and I will forever be grateful I got to bask in it for even a brief moment in time,” she concluded. “Thank you for sharing him with us. God Speed my old friend, here’s to your next great adventure.”
Dane and Heigl costarred on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Mark “McSteamy” Sloan and Dr. Izzie Stevens, respectively. Dane appeared on the medical drama from seasons 2 to 8, while OG cast member Heigl left after season 6.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Eric Dane,” a statement from ABC and 20th Television read earlier this week. “His remarkable talent and unforgettable presence on Grey’s Anatomy left a lasting impact on audiences around the world, and his courage and grace during his battle with ALS inspired so many. Our hearts are with his family, friends and colleagues, as well as the many fans whose lives were touched by his work.”
Ahead of his death, Dane was long grateful to have acted on Grey’s for so many years.
“I’m proud of [my career]. All of it got me to where I am today,” Dane said in his Famous Last Words interview, which premiered on Netflix hours after his death. “There was a ton of experience in there. Life experience, personal, professional. I think when I really tried to be good and approached the craft with a certain amount of effort and focus that I was capable of doing some pretty good work.”

Rebecca Ferguson’s 2-Part Sci-Fi Thriller Faces Streaming Setback Before Finale
Since Season 2 premiered in late 2024, Silo has been a near-constant presence in Apple TV’s rankings. It even surged to the No. 1 spot at various points, holding its ground against heavy hitters like Slow Horses, Shrinking, The Morning Show, and fellow sci-fi standout Severance.
But in a recent shift, the series has seen a dramatic shift in its fortunes, with Hijack claiming the top position. Even lower-profile titles like Tehran and Drops of God are currently charting above it. Now, just months before Season 3 is expected to arrive in 2026, the dystopian sci-fi favorite has been knocked out of the platform’s Top 10 entirely — a surprising shift for one of Apple’s most consistent performers.
Based on Hugh Howey’s bestselling novels, Silo is set in a future where humanity’s last survivors live in massive underground structures, cut off from the outside world. Anyone who breaks the rules is sent to the surface — supposedly to confirm whether Earth is survivable again. Rebecca Ferguson leads the series as Juliette Nichols, an engineer who finds herself pulled into a conspiracy that shakes the very foundation of her silo. The cast also includes Steve Zahn, Rashida Jones, Tim Robbins, Harriet Walter, Common, Iain Glen, and Tanya Moodie.
How Good Is ‘Silo’?
Collider’s Tania Hussain awarded the second season an 8/10, praising its “uniquely immersive environment” and “razor-sharp writing,” adding that “by grounding its Orwellian elements into tense yet relatable human struggles, Silo continues to surpass the genre… emerging as a masterful exploration of isolation and survival through Ferguson’s nuanced portrayal.” She wrote:
“With its 10 episodes this season, the Silo world is truly expanding and the supporting performances amplify so much of the stakes. Exemplifying a sad and almost heartwrenching portrayal of loneliness with a childlike wonder, Steve Zahn is at his absolute best in a barren playground where his character, Solo, creates the rules. It’s the chemistry he shares with Ferguson that creates a dynamic sort of interplay that contrasts her serious demeanor with a spirited and lively approach. He is every bit a compelling counterpart to Juliette, and one we see most terrifically evolve across the series.”
Silo Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Apple TV. Season 3 has wrapped production, while Season 4 continues to shoot. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.

Jason Statham’s 103-Minute Action Sequel Gets a Second Chance on Netflix
Jason Statham may not be pursuing any Academy Awards anytime soon, but at least the action star knows what works and sticks to it. Statham has been starring in one action movie per year for the last few years, but he’s turning up the heat in 2026 by starring in two films, Shelter and Mutiny. The former is his first action vehicle of the year, which is already winding down its theatrical run after a disappointing box office performance. Statham co-stars alongside Naomi Ackie (Mickey 17) in the actioner, which was directed by Ric Roman Waugh. Mutiny is another new action thriller co-starring Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders). It hails from director Jean-François Richet (Plane), and it will arrive in theaters everywhere this August. Statham also has several projects in the works slated to come out in 2027 and beyond.
Three years ago, Statham suited up as Lee Christmas for the fourth and final time in Expend4bles. He played the character for the first time 13 years prior in the first Expendables movie, which was a massive success at the box office, grossing nearly $275 million globally against an $80 million budget. As the years passed, though, the demand for Statham and his Expendables co-stars like Sylvester Stallone and Dolph Lundgren declined. This led to the fourth film being a complete disaster at the box office, grossing less than $40 million globally against a $100 million budget. However, Expend4bles recently premiered on Netflix in America, and the film quickly rose to #1 on the U.S. streaming charts. It took a few years, but it finally found streaming redemption.
What Is Jason Statham Working on After ‘Mutiny’?
Following the release of Mutiny this summer, Jason Statham will return to theaters next January for The Beekeeper 2. Timo Tjahjanto has taken over directorial control from David Ayer for the sequel, which also stars Pom Klementieff (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) and Adam Copeland (Percy Jackson and the Olympians). Statham is also attached to star with Jason Isaacs in Guy Ritchie’s new action thriller, which is being billed as a sequel/reboot to Daniel Craig’s Layer Cake. Just last week, news broke that Statham was attached to star in the new action blockbuster from David Leitch, Jason Statham Stole My Bike. He will play himself in the film, which will begin production this summer.
Be sure to watch Expend4bles before it’s removed from Netflix, and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.

10 Best TV Drama Finales of the Last 10 Years, Ranked
The following article contains spoilers.Ending a television show comes with a tremendous amount of expectation because loyal viewers want to ensure that their time has been rewarded. While a comedy show may only have situational scenarios in which the narrative development doesn’t lead towards a dramatic finale, drama shows can be judged based on whether they are perceived to have a satisfying finale. There’s no better example of this than Game of Thrones; although it was once considered to be one of the best drama shows of all time, it now has a more mixed legacy as a result of its terrible last episode.
The pressure to be successful has grown stronger in the last decade because of the obsessive relationships viewers have with their favorite shows within the streaming era. Here are the best drama television finales of the last ten years, ranked.
10
“Prisoners of War” (Season 8, Episode 12)
‘Homeland’ (2011–2020)
Homeland was an uneven series that managed to pull off a great finale with “Prisoners of War” because it ended in a realistic way. It was never possible for Carrie (Claire Danes) to completely escape from her responsibilities to protect the United States from terrorist threats, but “Prisoners of War” at least put a solid finish to her relationship with Saul (Many Patinkin), a character who was her ally, mentor, and occasionally adversary.
“Prisoners of War” was a cleverly named title because it’s shared with the original Israeli television series that inspired Homeland. Although “Prisoners of War” indicated that one chapter of Carrie’s story had come to an end, there’s always the possibility that the series could have a revival, especially given that it has seen a surge in popularity after being made to stream on Netflix, which resulted in a significant uptick in viewership.
9
“Lock and Key” (Season 6, Episode 6)
‘Peaky Blinders’ (2013–2022)
Peaky Blinders is one of the most satisfying British crime dramas because it was a rare show that seemed to get better with each season. While it began as an underrated BBC series with a niche viewership, Peaky Blinders became a phenomenon when it became available internationally on Netflix, and managed to make an icon out of Cillian Murphy’s Thomas Shelby.
Peaky Blinders ended perfectly with “Lock and Key” because it resolved the succession of the Shelby family and provided a satisfying end to each of the characters, including a clever last-minute twist involving Thomas’ destiny. While it was as great a conclusion as any loyal fan of the show could have asked for, it’s not the ultimate ending, as Murphy and most of the original cast are returning for the spinoff film Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man on Netflix.
8
“Jedha, Kyber, Erso” (Season 2, Episode 12)
‘Andor’ (2022–2025)
Andor is the best piece of Star Wars storytelling since Return of the Jedi, and the series ended on a perfect note that beautifully set up the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, in which Cassian (Diego Luna) sacrifices himself to ensure that the Rebel Alliance gains access to the Death Star plans. While grounded within the mythology of Star Wars, Andor was praised for its timely parallels to real-world politics.
Andor ended on the appropriately bittersweet note, as it was always going to be somewhat depressing that Cassian would not live to see the Empire fall to its knees. However, the twist that Bix (Adria Arjona) was pregnant with his child was an emotional way to signify that his heritage of heroism would continue well into the future, and that the name “Andor” would be remembered throughout galactic history.
7
“Green Queen” (Season 1, Episode 10)
‘The Curse’ (2023–2024)
The Curse is one of the weirdest shows of all time because it combined the awkward, psychologically unnerving black comedy of Nathan Fielder with the relentless thrills of Benny Safdie. Although The Curse was a series that hinted at supernatural elements as a conflict that emerged between the white characters and the people of color whom they try to “save,” the finale, “Green Queen,” takes a surprising twist by including something completely fantastical.
The Curse’s ability to take a hard slant into the inexplicable was a daring choice that resulted in an ending that left viewers scratching their heads in a way television hadn’t seen since the ending of The Sopranos. Perhaps the greatest surprise is that Fielder, a comedian at heart, was capable of giving a profound, dramatic performance and proved himself worthy of sharing the screen with Emma Stone.
6
“The Book of Nora” (Season 3, Episode 8)
‘The Leftovers’ (2014–2017)
The Leftovers is the best show that Damon Lindelof has ever written, and in many ways makes up for some of the mistakes that were made on Lost regarding plot contrivances. The Leftovers may have started as an HBO show that was almost too bleak for its own good, but it evolved into a surprisingly thoughtful, moving expose on the way that people respond to the unexplained facets of life.
The Leftovers dropped any semblance of spectacle in its finale by reverting to focus singularly on the relationship between Nora (Carrie Coon) and Kevin (Justin Theroux), whose romance had been the guiding light of the series. Whether the story that is told within the final monologue should be believed is a debate that fans of The Leftovers still have, which is only further proof that the finale has a lasting power.

“START” (Season 6, Episode 10)
‘The Americans’ (2013–2018)
The Americans is one of the best contemporary dramas because it was both a thrilling espionage series and a thoughtful examination of the burdens placed upon a family. Although there was a threat hanging over Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth Jennings (Keri Russell) from the beginning that suggested they would eventually have to choose between their loyalties to the Soviet Union and their new home in the United States, “START” forced them to confront this question in the most dramatic way possible.
“START” managed to finally pay off the storyline involving the character Stan, played by Noah Emmerich, in a remarkable performance. It’s even more impressive in retrospect to consider how authentically The Americans was as a depiction of what married life is like, especially since Rhys and Russell became married in real life after forming a bond while shooting the series together.

“Hello, Elliot” (Season 4, Episode 13)
‘Mr. Robot’ (2015–2019)
Mr. Robot didn’t have the finale that fans of Sam Esmail’s brilliant hacking drama expected because it didn’t center on a major showdown between Elliot Alderson (Rami Malek) and Whiterose (BD Wong), who has commanded the cyberterrorist organization Dark Army. Instead, the “Hello, Elliot” unpacked how Elliot’s various personalities had been born out of his desire to escape childhood trauma, and brought a satisfying conclusion to his relationship with Mr. Robot (Christian Slater).
Mr. Robot is a perfect example of why planning out a show in advance is a good thing, as Esmail knew exactly how Elliot’s story would end from the moment he began working on it, meaning that all the foreshadowing within the previous seasons paid off perfectly in “Hello, Elliot.” It also featured a staggering performance by Malek, who was able to unpack new layers to Elliot after shocking truths were revealed throughout the fourth and greatest season of the series.

“Saul Gone” (Season 6, Episode 13)
‘Better Call Saul’ (2015–2022)
Better Call Saul ended with a finale that was perfect and seemed to confirm that it was a masterpiece worthy of Breaking Bad, the series in which Bob Odenkirk had first debuted the character of Jimmy McGill, also known as “Saul Goodman.”
Better Call Saul had used a split narrative device since its beginning to show the events that lead Jimmy down a path of corruption and crime, as well as what his life looked like in the aftermath of the Breaking Bad finale, “Felina.” “Saul Gone” not only completed flashing back to the events of Breaking Bad and showing them from Saul’s perspective, but finally forced him to face the consequences of his actions; like Walter White (Bryan Cranston) before him, Saul became a narcissistic anti-hero who was incapable of being redeemed because of his unwillingness to show any change.
2
“Part 18” (Season 3, Episode 18)
‘Twin Peaks: The Return’ (2017)
Twin Peaks had a rocky road to its finale because David Lynch’s brilliant crime mystery was initially canceled by ABC in 1991, only for him to revive it in 2017 with a third and final season. Twin Peaks: The Return had trapped Agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) in the body of the childish character for the majority of its eighteen episodes, but the ending saw him finally returning in an attempt to save Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee) in the past before the murder that set up the show.
“Part 18” is among the bleakest hours of television ever aired because Cooper sees the misguided notion of trying to change the past, which inevitably leads Laura to suffer even more. It’s not only a perfect ending to Twin Peaks, but a poignant ending to Lynch’s work as an artist, as he did not direct any other movies or shows before his tragic passing in 2025.
1
“With Open Eyes” (Season 4, Episode 10)
‘Succession’ (2018–2023)
Succession ended in the only way it possibly could by finally facing Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook), and Roman (Kieran Culkin) with the consequences of aspiring to fulfill the legacy of their late father, Logan (Brian Cox). Although the question of who would take control of Waystar RoyCo had been debated throughout the entire show, “With Open Eyes” made a cruel twist; Shiv’s spurned husband, Tom (Matthew Macfadyen), would be placed as the new CEO, even though he had sold out the company to the invasive investor Matsson (Alexander Skarsgard).
Succession ended on a Shakespearean note that confirmed the tragic fates that each of the characters was doomed to after failing to come together to save the company. Nicholas Britell’s score has always been brilliant, but the musical cues he used within the final moments of “With Open Eyes” may be his greatest contribution to the show.
