Car expert warns remove 8 items ‘immediately’ this week

For those lucky enough to own a car, and therefore avoid the cold walks to the bus stop, beware, you’re not as safe as you may think.

For that matter, Car Care expert, Katie Newman, from Carfume reveals everything you need to know about mould in the car and how to prevent it from developing. 

Due to the extreme weather conditions during the winter months, mould can be a common issue in cars. Once moisture from damp conditions or wet belongings becomes trapped inside a car, then mould can grow rapidly, leading to musty odours, condensation on windows and in more advanced cases, visible mould on seats or carpets. Here are three simple ways to stop mould from developing in your car this winter:

Remove these items IMMEDIATELY

To prevent the ideal conditions for mould growth, remove any wet belongings from your vehicle. This includes coats, umbrellas, walking boots, reusable shopping bags, pet blankets and toys, and even gym wear. These items release a significant amount of moisture and if left in a car overnight, even by accident, can create the perfect environment for mould to develop. 

Ventilation is key

Ventilation is a crucial way of reducing and preventing mould in a car. Mould thrives in damp environments that have very little ventilation; therefore, making sure the vehicle has a regular circulation of fresh air will help to eradicate the problem, as it helps to lower humidity and evaporate any moisture.

Regular fresh air will also help dry out damp surfaces. Try to leave your windows open whenever possible. 

Don’t skip the winter chores!

Many drivers will often reduce the number of times they clean their car during the winter months; however, regular cleaning, such as hoovering or wiping down surfaces, will eliminate any potential mould and help to dry out moisture.

Once the interior is clean and dry and you’ve addressed any moisture, then using an air freshener  can keep the car smelling fresh and cleaner for longer.
