Throughout 1,460 days of the Ukraine war, two figures have remained central.
The decisions made by Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, their leadership styles, and their standing on the international stage have shaped a conflict soon entering its fifth year.
But how have the war’s two central figures changed in the past four years?
Sky News has explored each leader’s domestic and global image, as well as how the conflict has shaped them personally, in this piece.
Mr Zelenskyy has undergone one of the most dramatic image transformations of any contemporary leader in the past four years, going from a relatively inexperienced president to a central symbol of resistance and democratic defiance.
While his background in acting made his rise to Ukraine’s highest office an unlikely one, Mr Zelenskyy fit the presidential mould in his early years, at least in appearance.

Often seen clean-shaven and suited, images of Ukraine’s leader from before the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022 now make him appear boyish compared to the hardened wartime leader of 2026.
Mr Zelenskyy is now rarely spotted in anything other than military fatigues, something that famously irked Donald Trump when he hosted the Ukrainian president for a disastrous meeting at the White House last year.

Domestically, the 2022 invasion saw Mr Zelenskyy experience an initial surge in approval and trust as Ukrainians rallied behind their leader.

His decision to stay in Kyiv and lead from the capital, even after offers to evacuate for his own safety, became symbolic of Ukrainian resistance, enhancing his credibility and sense of purpose.
“The fight is here; I need ammunition, not a ride,” he reportedly told US officials as Russia’s 35-mile armoured convoy closed in on the capital.

From that moment on, Mr Zelenskyy has remained a central unifying figure in Ukraine, providing nightly video updates to inform and rally his people and making visits to frontline towns to inspire his troops.
Mr Zelenskyy’s global standing skyrocketed after 2022. He became not just Ukraine’s leader but the face of its diplomatic effort, repeatedly addressing parliaments, world leaders and public audiences to sustain foreign support.
By framing the war with Russia as a broader struggle between democracy and authoritarianism, Ukraine’s president positioned his country on the world stage as defending both European and Western values.

He’s been successful in his repeated attempts to bring financial and military support to Ukraine and maintained working relationships with key allies throughout the war. He even wrestled Donald Trump back from the brink after their disastrous White House meeting last February.

Outside questions remain – largely from Europe – over Mr Zelenskyy’s ability to tackle corruption at home, while his reputation in Russia has remained negative, but his image on the world stage overall remains positive.

So, what about how the last four years have changed Mr Zelenskyy personally?
There is no doubt about the toll the war has taken on the president and his family, as it has for millions of Ukrainians.
In the early months of the war, his family were evacuated and taken to secret locations to keep them safe. That separation had a clear impact on Mr Zelenskyy.
According to First Lady Olena Zelenska, her husband now appreciates the simple things more, such as communication with his family.

“Send him a photo of his son or tell him what his daughter said. And it touches him very emotionally now,” she said in 2023.
“He wasn’t so sensitive to it before.”

Despite hoping to see Ukraine capitulate within days, Russia’s invasion has now dragged into its fifth year. In that time, Mr Putin’s global standing has largely deteriorated to pariah status.
The Ukraine war has recast his image, both domestically as the wartime leader Russia “needs” (in state narratives) and internationally as a more marginalised, conflict-driven figure.

Personally, the Russian president has become more isolated since the invasion, both in terms of his public appearances and his demeanour – claiming he “jokes less” since the war began.

Inside Russia, Mr Putin’s popularity has been sustained by a mix of state-controlled messaging, repression of dissent and wartime patriotic mobilisation, even amid economic strain and military setbacks.
His approval ratings initially rosesharply after the invasion began, reaching some of the highest figures in years, with a surge in patriotic sentiment and support for “defending Russia”.

And while sanctions, mobilisation and economic pressures dented some support, independent and state pollsters still often report significant backing for Mr Putin among many Russians.
Even so, it can be difficult to gauge public opinion of the president inside Russia thanks to censorship and media control.
The Kremlin has demanded active participation in and support for the war from society since 2022, not just quiet compliance.
Opposition politics are outlawed, independent media has been almost entirely dismantled or subjected to strict “foreign agent” laws, and even mentioning the war in ways that contradict official narratives can lead to prison sentences.
But that hasn’t stopped some direct criticism. One womanwrote to Mr Putin demanding an explanation as to why her late son, an 18-year-old conscript, had been involved in combat.

The spiralling cost of living has also damaged Mr Putin at home. For many households, everyday essentials – from basic groceries to fuel and housing – have become markedly more expensive, squeezing incomes despite official assurances of economic resilience.
During his2025 annual address, Russians sent messages for the president to answer, many of which raised concerns over the state of the economy.

Outside Russia’s borders, Mr Putin’s reputation has worsened markedly.
While relations with many Western governments were already strained before 2022, the invasion of Ukraine transformed long-standing suspicion into broad diplomatic isolation.
Mr Putin no longer sits comfortably at global tables and forums frequented by world powers, while several Western governments have severed ties entirely.
In response, Russia’s president has kept relationships with his few remaining allies close, narrowing his diplomatic circle.
Mr Putin had no contact with the White House during the early stages of the war under Joe Biden. But the return of Donald Trump brought a shift in approach: several phone calls and a face-to-face meeting in Alaska have suggested a desire to redefine the two powers’ relationship.

Putin the man
As with Mr Zelenskyy, there is little doubt that four years of war have also taken a significant toll on Russia’s leader.
During his 2024 year-end press conference, he stated that the ongoing war in Ukraine had changed him, causing him to “joke less” and “almost stop laughing”.

He also said that his focus has shifted, stating his happiness would not be complete until all Russian forces return from the frontline.
Mr Putin also appears to have become more physically and socially isolated during the war, with fewer spontaneous public interactions and reduced foreign travel compared with pre-war years.
The U.S. has brokered talks with delegations from Moscow and Kyiv as part of the Trump administration’s yearlong push for peace. But reconciling key differences, such as the future of Russian-occupied Ukrainian land and postwar security for Ukraine, has thwarted progress.
Meanwhile, thousands of each countries’ troops have died on the battlefield, and Ukrainian civilians have been battered by Russian aerial strikes that have brought years of power outages and water cuts.

Here’s a look at the conflict, by the numbers, since the full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022.
1.8 million
The upper end of the estimated number of soldiers killed, wounded or missing on both sides, according to a report last month by the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a think tank.
It estimated that Russia suffered 1.2 million casualties, including up to 325,000 troop deaths, between February 2022 and December 2025 — what it said was the largest number of troop deaths for any major power in any conflict since World War II.
Russia has not released figures on battlefield deaths since January 2023, when it said more than 80 soldiers were killed in a Ukrainian strike, bringing the total military deaths Moscow has confirmed to just over 6,000.

CSIS estimated that Ukraine has seen 500,000 to 600,000 military casualties, including up to 140,000 deaths.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said earlier this month that 55,000 Ukrainian troops have died in the war. Many are missing, he said.
Neither Moscow nor Kyiv gives timely data on military losses. Independent verification is not possible.

The U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission’s count for civilian deaths in Ukraine since Russia’s all-out invasion, though it says that is likely an underestimate. More than 40,600 civilians were injured over the same period, it said in a December report.

The war has killed at least 763 children, according to the U.N.
Last year was the deadliest for civilians in Ukraine since 2022. The conflict killed 2,514 civilians and injured 12,142 in the country in 2025 — a 31% increase in civilian casualties over 2024, it said.

Over the past year, Russia has gained just 0.79% of Ukraine’s territory in the grinding war of attrition, the Washington-based think tank said in calculations provided earlier this month to The Associated Press, underscoring the little progress Moscow’s forces have made despite huge costs in troops and armor.

Before Russia’s all-out invasion, it controlled nearly 7% of Ukraine, including Crimea and parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the east, as Moscow-backed separatists fought the Ukrainian army, according to Ukrainian officials and Western analysts.

U.S. President Donald Trump stopped sending American weapons paid for by the U.S. to Ukraine after he took office just over a year ago. European countries, striving to make up the difference, increased their military aid last year by 67% compared with the 2022-2024 period, the institute said in a report this month.
Foreign humanitarian and financial aid to Ukraine fell by 5% last year in comparison with the average in the previous three years, it said.

There were emotional scenes on the final day of the Games

A thrilling final saw the US beat their neighbours Canada 2-1, with Jack Hughes winning the game in overtime after his side withstood relentless pressure from their opponents throughout the contest. The victory meant they topped the Olympic podium for the first time since the ‘Miracle on Ice’ at Lake Placid in 1980, and came after the women’s side also beat Canada 2-1 in their final to win gold.
But the historic win was also tinged with sadness as the team paid tribute to their former teammate Johnny Gaudreau, who would have likely been on the podium with them if not for his tragic death in August 2024.
The NHL winger and his brother Matthew were killed when they were hit by an alleged drunk driver while cycling together in New Jersey on the eve of their sister’s wedding. He was just 31 years old, while Matthew – also an ice hockey player – was only 29.

Gaudreau would have been expected to be part of Team USA at the Milano-Cortina Games, with his family admitting representing his country at the Olympics was “one of his greatest dreams”.
Having been cruelly denied that opportunity, the team made sure to honour his memory throughout their Olympic campaign, with two jerseys bearing the brothers’ names hanging in the United States changing room since their first match in the competition.
Members of the Gaudreau family watched on as the United States sealed the gold medal on Sunday and there were more emotional scenes in the aftermath, as Johnny’s jersey was unfurled and carried around the ice by members of the team.
Gaudreau’s father was left in tears by the touching moment, while those watching inside the stadium and at home were also choked up as the late star’s young children – Noa and Johnny Jr – were escorted out onto the ice to join the team and hold their father’s jersey for the Team USA group photo.

Ahead of the Games, the Gaudreau family wrote on X: “As the Olympics are set to begin, our family is filled with both pride and heartache knowing how much this moment meant to John. Representing Team USA at the Olympics was one of his greatest dreams.

If your journey is delayed, your iPhone will prompt you to extend the timer.

If you don’t respond, your contact can receive limited details such as your last known location, battery level, and signal status – helping them understand what’s happening.
“It’s a smart use of technology,” Mr Bordoni adds.

A Kim Kardashian-obsessed TV star who labelled himself Britain’s ‘Lip King’ has passed away.
Jordan James Park died last week, with his sister saying the family have been left “numb, shocked and heartbroken”. Jordan spent more than £130,000 on cosmetic surgery, having at least four nose jobs, a BBL and 50 other procedures.

Following the death of beauty therapist Alice Webb, who died after she underwent a liquid Brazilian butt lift (BBL), the plastic surgery obsessive once again entered the limelight. He was arrested in 2024 on suspicion of manslaughter over the death of a mum-of-five after a BBL operation.

Fencing and solar panels appear to have been installed next to some boats on the river, which the council said is prohibited
Cambridge City Council has confirmed the number of boats mooring without permission on the River Cam – while 25 applicants are waiting for a permanent mooring. There are currently nine boats believed to be mooring without permission, and two boats believed to be in breach of licence conditions.

An email from the chief executive of the council, seen by CambridgeshireLive, said the council was aware of ‘some’ boats mooring without permission or in breach of licence conditions. A council spokesperson has since confirmed the figures.
The waiting list for permanent residential moorings in central Cambridge has been closed since 2022. It currently has around 25 applicants and is expected to reopen in the spring.
CambridgeshireLive has also been made aware of areas on the river where fencing and solar panels appear to have been installed next to some boats. These items have been said to prevent access to the riverside by members of the public.
A council spokesperson said: “The terms and conditions of Cambridge City Council’s Mooring Licence (Residential) prohibit any temporary or permanent structures on the riverbank beside moored boats. When structures are found, licence holders are instructed to remove them. If they fail to do so the council may terminate the licence.”

They added: “The council’s enforcement team carries out regular river patrols, and there are also ad hoc inspections from other council officers. The council has a number of enforcement options to ensure licence holders comply with the terms and conditions of their licence agreement.
“These include a requirement for immediate compliance, the termination of a licence, the removal of a boat when a licence ends, and seeking a court injunction or possession order if required.
“Action against boats believed to be mooring without permission or in breach of their licence conditions will be taken as soon as the council’s legal team can prepare statements and secure court dates, now that both locks have reopened.”

24 Hours in Police Custody fans will be dealt a huge blow this week as Channel 4 has confirmed another change to its television schedule.
The landmark documentary follows lead detectives on the frontline as they investigate serious and intense crimes. From the moment a distressing phone call is first made, viewers witness the real life drama and urgency in the race against time as police officers fight for justice.
One person praised the show, penning: “Without doubt the best programme on TV”, as another added: “Without doubt the best Tv program being made anywhere, by anyone! #24hoursinpolicecustody watched all 100 episodes.”
Just this year, brand new episodes were released with fans eagerly awaiting more new instalments. However, this month, viewers realised repeat episodes had once again been put on the TV roster as they called for fresh episodes to be released.

But in another blow, those waiting for the usual 24 Hours in Police Custody slot this week week on Tuesday, February 24 will be disappointed to learn that no episode will be aired at all.
Instead, during its usual 9pm slot, a brand new series titled Dirty Business will air. Channel 4 teases: “The drama continues as David Thewlis stars in a real-life story of pollution and criminal convictions that exposes how water companies have polluted our natural resources for so long.”
It is not yet known when 24 Hours in Police Custody will return to TV screens and whether there will be new instalments or old repeats, but previous episodes can still be streamed online for those wanting to watch the show.
Just this week, plunging viewers into Bedfordshire Police’s largest operation into historic abuse, 24 Hours in Police Custody Horror House Part 2 aired on Channel 4 as detectives continued their investigation and fight for justice.
Channel 4 teased: “Will the victims of alleged historic child sex abuse finally get justice? Or will the suspect walk free, like he did before?”
Taking to X, many viewers were quick to share their thoughts on the chilling episode. One person wrote: “Only half way through #24hoursinpolicecustody & I’ve tears streaming down my face.” Another said: “I saw both parts of this investigation & was sickened beyond belief.”

Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, 59, was reportedly a former police officer, who switched sides to run the vast criminal drug trafficking operation.
Formed in 2009, Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG, rapidly became one of Mexico’s most violent drug cartels. It is believed to possess the highest capacity for trafficking cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine, and more recently, fentanyl into the United States.
Under El Mencho’s leadership, the cartel was implicated in numerous homicides targeting rival groups and Mexican law enforcement, as well as alleged assassination attempts on Mexican government officials.

The Trump administration previously designated CJNG as a foreign terrorist organisation.
Since 2017, El Mencho has faced multiple indictments in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, with the most recent superseding indictment on April 5 2022, charging him with conspiracy and distribution of controlled substances for unlawful importation into the U.S., and firearm use in drug trafficking.
He was also charged under the Drug Kingpin Statute for operating a continuing criminal enterprise.

A member of Oseguera’s Jalisco New Generation Cartel has told Reuters that the blazes and sporadic gunfire in Mexico were carried out in revenge for his killing, and warned of further bloodshed as groups move to take control of his cartel.

He further noted that, when seated with your feet flat on the floor, you don’t always achieve full relaxation, which can make it more challenging to pass stools. Fortunately, there’s a straightforward solution.

The fire was reported on Roosevelt Street in Kearsley on the afternoon of Sunday February 22 at around 3.30pm.
Firefighters and police officers were called to the scene on Sunday afternoon and officers say no injuries were reported because of the 3.30pm blaze.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “We were called around 3.30pm on February 22 2026 to reports of a fire at a property.
“Emergency services attended. The fire was extinguished and no injuries reported.

It is understood that no one was inside at the house on Roosevelt Street while the fire was underway.
Members of the public have reported that emergency services were called again to the same house later that same day at around 10pm in the evening.
They reported that a fire appeared to have broken out again at the same house with images from the scene showing firefighters going about their work to make the scene safe.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for further information.
Members of the public have been encouraged to always call 999 in the event of an emergency.
The adverse weather conditions have caused several flights to be cancelled with passengers advised to contact their airlines for updates

Flights arriving and departing from Dublin Airport have been cancelled due to a huge storm.
Storm Hernando is causing chaos in the USA and, as a result, 13 flights to and from the Irish airport have been cancelled on Monday, February 23.

The weather conditions on the east coast of the USA have already caused thousands of flights to and from the region to be cancelled.
Posting on X, the airport said: “Due to adverse weather (Storm Hernando) on the east coast of the US, airlines have cancelled a number of flights due to operate to/from Dublin Airport on Monday.”
Dublin Airport said airlines had cancelled seven outbound and six inbound flights so far as a result of the storm.
It said flights to JFK airport in New York, Newark airport in New Jersey and Boston airport are affected.

Passengers have been advised to contact their airlines for the latest updates.
The National Weather Service has warned: “A major winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds, and coastal flooding across the Mid-Atlantic and north-east that may cause impossible travel conditions and power outages.”
