Saudi Arabia’s Roads General Authority (RGA) has begun implementing a new road surface improvement technology designed to enhance traffic safety and prolong the lifespan of roads without the need for full reconstruction.

The authority said the technique forms part of its strategy to adopt advanced global technologies and innovative maintenance solutions across the national road network. The method is classified as preventive maintenance and improves the condition of asphalt pavement while minimising disruption to traffic.

The technology is applied using a cold process that lays a thin surface layer composed of asphalt emulsion, fine aggregate, water and chemical additives. The materials are mixed and applied directly to the road surface using specialised equipment, eliminating the need for heating or full resurfacing.

According to the RGA, the treatment improves skid resistance, seals surface cracks and addresses early-stage pavement deterioration, helping to raise safety levels for road users and extend the operational life of roads.

The authority highlighted several advantages of the new approach, including rapid implementation that reduces traffic delays and limits the impact on daily travel. The cold application process is also environmentally friendly, cutting energy consumption and lowering carbon emissions compared with traditional resurfacing methods.

In addition to safety and sustainability benefits, the technology improves surface uniformity and road appearance, while reducing future maintenance costs and delivering greater economic efficiency.

The RGA said the rollout reflects its ongoing efforts to modernise the roads sector, enhance traffic safety and support long-term sustainability objectives across the Kingdom.
