Eddie Hearn Gives New Anthony Joshua Health Update in Emotional Statement After Fatal Crash
Eddie Hearn has issued a new statement on Anthony Joshua after the British boxer was involved in a fatal car crash in Nigeria.
Ayodele, known as Latz, was seen playing table tennis with the Brit boxer hours before the collision and the road on which the crash occurred has since been harrowingly described as ‘the Highway of Death’.
Between the years of 2023 and 2025, over 600 people have died on that very road because of the high volume of traffic. A total of just under 4000 people are believed to have been injured and, in terms of AJ’s crash, the Nigerian President has now released further details.
Nigerian President Tinubu Reveals Conversation with Joshua Following Fatal Car Crash
Tinubu, the President of Nigeria, took to X (formerly Twitter) to extend his gratitude to the family and friends of those affected by the crash. “I extend my deep sympathies to you following the tragic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, which claimed two precious lives and caused you injuries,” he wrote.
Hours later, Tinubu revealed that he had spoken to Joshua, who recently beat Jake Paul with a sixth-round knockout in Miami, personally to send his condolences following a fatal crash.
“I have spoken with AJ [Anthony Joshua] to personally convey my condolences over the passing of his two close associates, Kevin Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, in the recent accident. I wished him a full and speedy recovery, and prayed with him. AJ assured me he is receiving the best possible care.”
He also wrote that he had spoken to and prayed for Joshua’s mother, who was said to be “deeply appreciative” of his phone call after the tragedy. “I also spoke with his mother and prayed for her. She was deeply appreciative of the call.
“Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was at the hospital with them, assured me he will do everything possible to ensure AJ receives the best medical attention. May God strengthen the families and grant repose to the souls of the departed.”
Joshua Recovering in Hospital, According to Officials
Footage showed Watford-born Joshua wincing in pain as he was helped out of the vehicle but, according to officials, per The Independent, he is recovering in a hospital in Nigeria. Elsewhere, the Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, confirmed the families of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, who were killed in the crash, have been notified.
Joshua remains in a stable condition and a statement from Mr Abiodun said: “We are comfortable with the doctors and the quality of care at the hospital, and we appreciate the medical team for their professionalism.”
The 36-year-old has reportedly been visited by the deputy head of the British High Commission in Nigeria as he begins his recovery. In terms of what caused the fatal car crash, a spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps said preliminary investigations indicated the vehicle was “traveling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit”.
That saw the driver lose control as he attempted an overtaking manoeuvre, thus crashing into a stationary truck by the side of the road. The Ogun State Police Commissioner, Lanre Ogunlowo, told ESPN that the accident happened as a result of a “burst tire”.
