The film is described by critics as a cringe comedy masterpiece

A film hailed by some enthusiasts as ‘one of the funniest comedies in the last 15 years’ has finally made its way to streaming platforms.

The film, named Friendship, is now accessible to those subscribed to Sky Cinema or holding a movies pass with NOW, Sky’s alternative streaming service. The esteemed A24 studio secured the rights for the film’s distribution, but UK fans have been eagerly awaiting the chance to view it.

Despite a brief stint in cinemas, the film was largely inaccessible to UK audiences until now. While viewers in the US had the option to purchase or rent the title online, its arrival on Sky and NOW marks its UK streaming debut.

The film’s synopsis is intentionally vague, revealing only that it centres around suburban dad Craig Waterman, a man of few social interactions, who forms an unexpected bond with his new neighbour, Austin Carmichael.

As their friendship deepens, so does Craig’s fixation on Austin, threatening to upend both of their lives, reports the Mirror.

The cast is headlined by comedian and Netflix star Tim Robinson, who portrays Craig, while Paul Rudd of Ant-Man fame plays his neighbour Austin. Kate Mara from House of Cards also features as Craig’s wife.

Friendship is the brainchild of Andrew DeYoung, serving as both writer and director in what marks his feature debut. DeYoung’s previous credits include work on shorts and TV shows such as Our Flag Means Death, The Decameron and Miracle Workers, among others.

The film has garnered an impressive 88% rating on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes and has been well-received by a majority of viewers, although some concede it may not be to everyone’s taste.

One critic hailed the film as “a cringe comedy masterpiece.”

A viewer shared their glowing review online, stating: “From the opening scene to the closing credits, Friendship is a cinematic triumph that truly lives up to its name. This film isn’t just a feel-good story; it’s a profound and hilarious exploration of the bonds that connect us. The chemistry between the two leads is an absolute joy to watch.

“Their comedic timing is impeccable, and they manage to convey a deep sense of camaraderie that feels incredibly authentic. I found myself laughing out loud at their witty banter and genuinely moved by the more poignant moments.”

Another viewer chimed in with: “I couldn’t stop laughing throughout Friendship! From start to finish, it had the kind of humour that just hits right-genuine, clever, and totally unforced. The story was not only hilarious but also surprisingly heartfelt and original. It’s rare to find a comedy that feels this fresh and still delivers an emotional punch.”

Tim Robinson has gained recognition through his Netflix sketch series I Think You Should Leave, and some reckon audiences need to appreciate that programme to fully grasp the film’s humour. As one viewer put it: “The movie is an absolute comedic masterpiece, but it’s not for everyone. You’ll have to have an acquired taste in comedy and be a huge fan of I Think You Should Leave to understand just how brilliant it is.”

They went on to say: “If ITYSL isn’t for you, then you’ll probably struggle to find it that that funny. It’s been a long time since I watched a comedy that was full of laugh out loud moments non stop. Tim Robinson’s portrayal of a socially awkward guy trying to navigate a new painfully awkward accidental friendship is brilliant.”
