The games industry will come back to growth in 2025 | DFC Intelligence

The video game industry, which is in the middle of one of its most difficult years in recent memory, is poised to return to growth in 2025, according to DFC Intelligence. The game analyst firm makes this claim in the preview of its annual market report, which releases in full in December. According to DFC’s findings, the video games industry will return to growth in 2025, and in fact next year will be the beginning of a record period of growth.

DFC predicts that gaming will surpass the record highs set during the COVID-19 pandemic following the last two years of decline. It also predicts that consumers will continue to spend a lot on hardware, including consoles, PC and accessories — including whatever new consoles the major manufacturers put out in the next few years. Out of all those consoles, DFC predicts Nintendo will win the race for sales.

GamesBeat asked DFC founder David Cole about some of the report’s findings, including the reasons behind the current lack of growth. According to him, the video game industry has been steadily growing since the ’70s and ’80s, with each generation of gamers advocating the medium to the next. He called the pandemic-era growth, “an artificial and temporary spike in demand, accompanied by disruption in the supply chain for both hardware and software” followed by a “natural correction.”

Cole added, “We see overall industry growth but as always the biggest problem is companies expecting too much growth and/or over investing in the latest fad. A big issue this generation has been a disruption for the latest PlayStation and Xbox generation. I think the focus was put on getting manufacturing up to speed versus marketing the latest generation of video game consoles to that secondary user base that helps drive sales in later years. That has had a negative ripple effect that we
believe was a unique occurrence due to the Covid situation.”

Other findings in DFC’s 2024 report

The report’s findings are not entirely positive — regarding the consoles, DFC predicts that only two out of three will see “meaningful market penetration,” and Cole compared the prospects of the third-place finisher to the dismal performance of the Wii U. DFC also predicts a battle to control distribution in the industry, with a corresponding increase in marketing and community relations.

One other thing to note is that DFC’s report also predicts that new tools, including AI, will make it easier for developers to create bigger and more complex games with smaller teams and budgets. Since the firms expects add-on content (expansions, cosmetics, etc.) revenue to exceed that of full games, larger studios may focus on live-service content and established franchises — leaving the market open for smaller studios to launch original IP.

When GamesBeat asked how the games industry can avoid a repeat of the disastrous last two years, Cole said, “Unfortunately, an event like Covid can throw a monkey wrench into all plans. The hope is that the smart money in the industry has learned some lessons. Video games are considered a “sexy” business that many people desire to get into. The result can be a lot of money being thrown around without careful consideration.

“The next few years is going to see a major hardware transition with new consoles, continued emergence of cross-platform PC gameplay and multiple monetization models. Even with growth it will not be an easy period to navigate. Like other entertainment areas there tends to be an oversupply of products, and you will always have a lot of losers. That is just the way things roll.”

MealMe, the startup integrating food ordering tech into apps, picks up $8M

MealMe, the startup integrating food ordering tech into apps, picks up $8M

MealMe, a unified API that embeds food and retail ordering into consumer apps and websites, announced on Thursday that it secured $8 million in Series A funding. The newly raised capital brings the total amount raised to $16 million.

MealMe has undergone several changes since its launch in 2019. Initially, it was a consumer app designed to help people find the best deals on delivery from restaurants and grocery stores. It then evolved to allow consumers to order food directly through the MealMe app.

The company has now completely transitioned to a B2B model, offering its API for other businesses to integrate ordering technology into their applications and websites. When a company integrates MealMe’s API, it gets access to real-time product pricing and availability, and it enables customers to order their products from local stores.

MealMe says that its API provides inventory data on more than 1 billion products from more than 1.2 million grocery stores, restaurants, and retailers across the U.S. and Canada. It currently serves more than 100 customers, including Fantuan Delivery, Favor Delivery, TripAdvisor, and others.

Matthew Bouchner, co-founder and president, told TechCrunch, “We built the API for ourselves with the consumer app to add ordering from stores into our app, and then realized that, OK, well, we can continue growing our app, or we can pivot to B2B and be the infrastructure layer for anybody that needs the ability to pull menus and inventory and send orders into stores.”

Bouchner added that the company made the pivot after seeing the growing trend of embedded commerce, which essentially involves integrating e-commerce features into existing platforms. This allows businesses to offer their products directly to customers through platforms they already use.

“Everything is going to be embedded. You’re going to be able to order from your car, from your TV, from your existing social networking apps, with your AI-based assistant, and there needs to be an infrastructure layer that connects that consumer-facing platform to stores and to marketplaces … I think that we are going to be at the forefront of everything embedded for years to come,” he said.

The Series A was led by Mercury Fund with participation from existing investors Gaingels and Palm Drive Capital.

The company will use the new capital to strengthen marketing efforts and grow the team to deliver better developer support to enterprise customers. In addition to food ordering and delivery, the company aims to focus on expanding into other areas, such as broader e-commerce and AI.

Ford is offering its own Tesla Supercharger adapter to EV customers after rocky rollout

Ford is making its own branded specialty adapter to enable Tesla Supercharger access for its EV customers. The automaker will offer its new adapter alongside the current Tesla-produced one for customers still awaiting a complementary adapter and will start shipping it today.

The adapters are being manufactured by EV equipment supply company Lectron, which has already made its own “Vortex” NACS to CCS adapters. Lectron had to recall its adapters previously due to a design flaw where it could unlatch while charging.

Lectron’s CEO Christopher Maiwald said in a State of Charge interview that the problem had been fixed. In an email to The Verge, PR representative for Ford Eddie Fernandez wrote that the new adapters are not connected to the ones Ford asked customers to stop using. “The noted replacement adapters affected as part of that customer satisfaction program were a small portion of the overall supply,” Fernandez said.

Ford recently launched its Power Promise campaign to help EV “fence-sitters” adapt to the lifestyle, offering a free home charger with standard installation.
