Two trains collided on a route to Machu Picchu in Peru, killing train driver Roberto Cárdenas and injuring about 40 others with British tourists amongst those on board

British holidaymakers were amongst passengers aboard the devastating train collision at a renowned South American tourist destination. Two locomotives crashed head-on along the railway line ferrying visitors to Peru’s Machu Picchu.

Train operator Roberto Cárdenas is believed to be the only person killed in the accident. Whether any British nationals sustained injuries in the collision remains unclear at present.

Initial reports and video evidence from the location indicate the trains – run by Inca Rail and PeruRail – smashed into one another whilst heading in opposite directions. Rescue teams rushed to the scene at approximately 1.20pm local time, which corresponds to 6.20pm GMT

Multiple local media outlets have verified that tourists feature among those hurt in the incident. Footage captured at the crash site shows passengers and staff frantically pleading for ambulances and medical assistance, while some injured individuals receive emergency care.

A spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said: “We are supporting a number of British nationals involved in a train collision near Machu Picchu, Peru, and are in contact with the local authorities.”

Inca Rail has confirmed one of its services was caught up in the tragic accident. The company stated its staff were immediately sent to the location to carry out “the necessary actions and evacuate passengers in an orderly and safe manner”, reports the Daily Star.

The treacherous terrain is reportedly hampering rescue efforts, causing concern among tourists and travel operators. Cusco governor Werner Salcedo has slammed what he called the chaotic handling of casualty transportation.

He voiced his worries, declaring: “We are concerned about how the injured have been transferred according to the convenience of the clinics. The ministries are responsible for this. I hold the private clinics responsible if the injured suffer further complications because they have prioritized their business over providing genuine care for the lives of our visitors.”
