Laura Muir to receive bronze medal from 2015 European Indoors 3,000m
Great Britain’s Laura Muir will be presented with her retrospective 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships bronze medal this weekend.
The Scot was 21 when she finished fourth in the 3,000m in Prague, but was upgraded to bronze in January after race winner Yelena Korobkina of Russia was found guilty of doping offences.
Now 31, Muir will receive her medal at the Lindsays Short Course cross-country event at Kirkcaldy on Saturday.
“I cannot emphasise or explain how much it means to the athletes to have the results rectified and the medals awarded to those who compete within the rules of our sport,” said Muir.
“So I am very excited to see that particular European Indoors 2015 medal at Kirkcaldy and it will have a proud place alongside my other sporting accomplishments.”
Sviatlana Kudzelich of Belarus has had her silver medal upgraded to gold and Netherlands’ Maureen Koster takes silver.
Korobkina was banned for four years from September 2023, and had her results between July 2013 and July 2016 expunged after being found guilty of doping last year.

Twente: Dutch club handed partial stadium closure by Uefa after racist abuse
Bosnia-Herzegovina supporters were found to have breached two Uefa regulations – throwing objects and racist and/or discriminatory behaviour.
The Bosnia-Herzegovina Football Federation has been fined 29,250 euros (£24,489) and ordered to partially close the national stadium for their next home game in a Uefa competition.
The national federations of Serbia, Estonia and Georgia have also been fined.
Serbia and Georgia will face partial stadium closures if they breach Uefa’s regulations again during a two-year probationary period, while Estonia have a one-year probationary period.
Panathinaikos have also been handed a suspended stadium closure for a two-year probationary period.
Uefa found the Greek side guilty on six charges, including “use of a laser pointer”, “throwing objects”, “discriminatory conduct” and “lighting of fireworks” during the 4-1 home Europa Conference League defeat to Chelsea on 24 October.
The club must also pay a fine of 76,000 euros (£63,631).

Alexandre Pantoja reacts to Belal Muhammad’s scratch from UFC 310, makes case to headline event
UFC champ Alexandre Pantoja believes his upcoming title defense against Kai Asakura would deliver in the main event spot at UFC 310.
Pantoja and Asakura are set for a championship bout at the UFC’s year-end pay-per-view event Dec. 7 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The bout was slated to be the co-main event of the card behind the Belal Muhammad vs. Shavkat Rakhmonov welterweight title bout, but Muhammad was forced to withdraw from the contest after suffering a nasty bone infection on his foot.
Rakhmonov says he’d be open to remaining on the card to fight for an interim title, but currently, the card is without a main event.
“I heard about Belal [being] hurt like two days ago in my gym before and I said, ‘It’s right?,’” Pantoja told MMA Fighting. “But it’s just talk, the guys just talking about it and then [earlier] I just seen the video [with him] in hospital with his feet. That’s a real, real problem on there, and this happens [at] a lot in the MMA gyms, some infections [on] the floor, they go to the gym. … I just [have] one main event in my life — in my last fight [at UFC 301] in Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro, and I know there’s some difference [fighting in that spot].
“You need to do more stuff to sell your pay-per-view, sell your fight, and let’s go. It’s a good time to learn about that. I think what everybody knows about is how I’m fighting, and after, I took a little break — maybe people don’t realize that, but I took a little break. My last fight was in May and now I fight in December, and this break is very good for me, for my family, you know. a lot of pressure, three title fights, and my coach Marcos Parrumpa say to me, ‘You need a break, you need to relax. You and your family need like one or two months. Don’t think about fights, you know, don’t think about you [needing] a fight, no cameras and everything.
“And now I’m feel super fresh for that fight because I had a good time, my family had a good time and now we’re in camp again. And we can see the difference in the house because my family breathes my fights because this happened for so many years. I know, 100 percent, I’m going to put on a very good show. I don’t like to say I’m going to finish that guy, I do my job, but, 100 percent, I’m in the best shape of my life.”
Pantoja captured the title with a decision win in an exciting battle with Brandon Moreno at UFC 290 in July 2023. “The Cannibal” has gone on to successfully defend the title twice, earning decision wins against Brandon Royval and Steve Erceg.
He’ll face Asakura, the former RIZIN bantamweight champion who signed with the UFC earlier this year. Asakura enters the bout after finishing his past two opponents, including former Bellator champ Juan Archuleta at RIZIN 45 this past December to regain the RIZIN 135-pound title.
With both fighters bringing exciting styles and fun fights to the cage, Pantoja’s suggestion is to have the UFC brass put the phones down and let the 125-pound fighters slug it out to close out the promotion’s pay-per-view year.
“I’m super excited, I’m the main event right now,” Pantoja said. “OK, I don’t talk too much, I’m from Brazil, my English is not so good but I think everybody has a good opportunity to see one of the best [fights] of the year. [The UFC signs] Asakura, the Japanese star, the champion from Japan for long years. I’m super happy with that crossover. I think it all the MMA fans want to see more of that. I [was] talking about [this] in the gym, we have Johnny Eblen in my gym. He’s a Bellator champ, I think about, maybe you have to bring him to UFC.
“That’s what everybody wants to see: The best [in the] UFC versus another promotion, another champion for all the world, and I have the opportunity. I’m very happy with the opponent for me, and more because I have [fought in main] events and Asakura [is] very popular in Japan, and I know [that] the Japanese buy a lot of pay-per-views too. That’s very good.”

Verstappen to take grid penalty for Brazilian GP after engine change
Max Verstappen will take a five-place grid penalty for an engine change for Sunday’s Brazilian Grand Prix, as he moves on to his sixth internal combustion engine of the 2024 Formula 1 season.
The championship leader had already taken a new ICE beyond the allowable limit of four at July’s Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, this being the third successive year that Red Bull had chosen to take the hit at that circuit.
Following a series of power unit issues in Mexico’s Friday sessions, as an air leak kept Verstappen confined to the garage during the final part of FP1 and the majority of FP2, Red Bull has chosen to take another engine from outside its pool.
This means that Verstappen will lose five places from wherever he qualifies for Sunday’s grand prix, although his sprint race qualifying result will be unaffected.
Verstappen will also use a new exhaust system, taking him up to eight used throughout the season, with eight permitted through the year.
The Dutchman has been in an increasingly precarious situation with his engine allowance for much of the season, as a problem with one unit in practice for the Canadian Grand Prix in June led to a lengthy inspection – leading to a fourth ICE being used as early as Spain.

This led to Red Bull taking a new Honda powerplant at Spa, but Verstappen has now lost another from his pool as a result of the issues in Mexico.
Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko told Austrian broadcaster ORF that the engine eventually used at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez “was no longer intended for the race, and the older an engine gets, the more its performance diminishes.”
He added that the Red Bull was giving up approximately “three to eight km/h on the straights” thanks to the reduction in horsepower.
Asked on Thursday if Brazil was one of the less compromising races to take a power unit penalty, Verstappen responded that it was not a certainty that he could recover ground lost to a penalty.
“That is something that is always unknown. You think that one particular track is the best place to take an engine or whatever penalty, but it’s never guaranteed. But yeah, it’s a possibility.”
