Man City Gamble on Omar Marmoush Hasn’t Paid Off Amid Antoine Semenyo Update
Manchester City took a gamble by signing Omar Marmoush for a significant fee earlier this year, but after the most recent Antoine Semenyo update, it’s a decision that hasn’t paid off.
Marmoush made the move to the Etihad Stadium during the previous January transfer window, signing from Eintracht Frankfurt for a fee of around £59m. The Egyptian international enjoyed an impressive start to life in England, scoring seven goals in his opening 14 starts in the Premier League last season, but he’s fallen down the pecking order this term.
Marmoush has played just 211 minutes in the Premier League this campaign, making a total of 10 appearances, with eight of those coming off the bench. The 26-year-old is nothing more than a squad player right now, and Pep Guardiola is in the market for more attacking reinforcements.

The move from Man City to acquire Marmoush’s signature for a fee of £59m hasn’t paid off, and their recent transfer activity proves just that. Rayan Cherki was brought in during the summer transfer window, and he’s already making a significant impact, with Marmoush barely involved under Guardiola.
GIVEMESPORT correspondent Ben Jacobs reported earlier this week that Bournemouth are expecting Semenyo’s move to Man City to be formalised within the next few days. Talks were held on Monday in regards to the structure of his £65m release clause being paid, and he’s already agreed personal terms with the Manchester outfit.
With Semenyo and Cherki added to the squad this season, and Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku finding their feet again, the signing of Marmoush, who described himself as ‘dangerous’, is proving to be a bit of a flop, and a costly one at that.

What Does This Mean for Marmoush?
Based on minutes played this season, it appears that Erling Haaland, Foden, Bernardo Silva, Doku, Cherki, Oscar Bobb, and Savinho are all ahead of Marmoush in the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium, and you’d imagine Semenyo will be jumping ahead of him in that list.
When the Egyptian international returns from the African Cup of Nations, when there’s a chance Semenyo has already made an impact, he could find himself even struggling to make the squad, never mind the starting XI.
A departure might be in the best interests of all parties, but it could be tricky for City to make a profit after an underwhelming season.
