Demi Moore on “The Substance” and resisting a toxic beauty culture

Demi Moore on "The Substance" and resisting a toxic beauty culture

Demi Moore has lived in her home since 2005. “It’s had some interesting incarnations,” she said. “It was a house with three kids, and now it’s just me and my silly pack of dogs.”

It’s hard to think of Moore as a grandmother who lives alone, but here she is, and doing what some are calling the best work of her career. Her latest film, “The Substance,” is about an aging TV star who finds a sinister-looking potion that can give her a younger, more perfect version of herself, but at a terrible price.

“I put so much pressure on myself,” she said, when discussing the value she had placed on her attractiveness in the past. “And I did have experiences of being told to lose weight. And all of those, while they may have been embarrassing and humiliating, it’s what I did to myself because of that.”

For example, when she was shooting 1993’s “Indecent Proposal,” she would ride a bike every day from her home in Malibu to Paramount Studios in Hollywood: that’s around 30 miles each way.

And she was nursing a baby at the time: “I think she was, like, five or six months old when we were shooting that. So, I was feeding her through the night, getting up in the dark with a trainer, with headlamp, biking all the way to Paramount, wherever, even on location where we were shooting; then shooting a full day, which is usually a 12-hour day; and then starting all over again. Even just the idea of, like, what I did to my body, it’s, like, so crazy, so ridiculous.”

But, she said, she thought it was what was required of her at the time: “Yeah. But you look back and you kinda go, ‘Did it really matter that much?’ Probably not! But at the time, I made it mean everything.”

Moore’s been in the spotlight since the ’80s – a talented, and at the time troubled, member of Hollywood’s so-called “Brat Pack.” On-screen she sparkled, in films like “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “About Last Night.” Off-screen, she struggled with self-esteem. “I just have a lot of compassion for what a scared little girl I actually really was, even though I didn’t let anybody see that,” she said. “And if I could go back, I would give her a hug and say, ‘It’s OK. It’s OK.’”

It was OK; Moore went on to become the highest-paid woman in the business, and she lifted other women as well. When she got a record $12.5 million for the 1996 movie “Striptease,” other women in Hollywood demanded, and got, bigger paychecks themselves.

She also challenged the notion of things like whether a 40-year-old woman should wear a bikini; and after shaving her head for 1997’s “G.I. Jane,” how long a woman’s hair should be when she reached a certain age.

Now, at 61, her hair hangs to her waist. “After I shaved my head, I think I just started to let my hair grow with the idea that you can have long hair if that’s what you want,” Moore said. “Who says that it’s not okay? And I’ve heard it many times. If I didn’t think I liked how I looked, then I would cut it.”

And in “The Substance,” she’s once again asking, Why do we think this way?

In one scene, in which her character is going on a date, she looks in the mirror, applies makeup, then purposely smears it. She said the process of shooting that scene was difficult. “Emotionally, that idea that I think many of us have been where we’re trying to make something better. and then we just keep making it worse,” she said. “For me, it’s one of the most heart-wrenching moments in the whole film. And it was at least 15 takes each time. And so, by the end, my face was raw.”

What happens to her after a day like that? “You go fall apart. You just go fall into your bed!” she laughed.

Smith asked, “For you personally, today, when you look in the mirror, what do you think?”

“Uhm, it fluctuates,” said Moore. “Some days I look and I’m like, Wow. That’s pretty good.  And some days, I catch myself dissecting, hyper-focusing on, you know, things that I don’t like. The difference is, now I can catch myself. I can go, Yeah, I don’t like that loose skin. But, you know, it is what it is. So, I’m gonna make the best of what is, as opposed to chasing what isn’t.

Smith asked, “Give me an example of that, something that maybe you chased that, in retrospect, you lost something?”

“I used to think, Oh, like my face, it’s like, oh so, like, chubby. I have no angles. I have nothing. And then you’re like, Yeah, but now it’s, like, loose! I wouldn’t mind some of that chubbiness back, in the right places!”

Moore has three grown children with ex-husband Bruce Willis, who is now living with dementia. She says when she’s in town she tries to visit every week. “The important thing is just to meet him where he’s at, as opposed to being attached to who he was, how he was. Because, again, that only just puts you in a place of loss versus being in the present, meeting him where he’s at, and finding the joy and the loving of just all that is where he is.”

It seems Demi Moore has found peace with the things that are beyond her control – a wisdom and a freedom that, if we’re lucky enough, come naturally in a long and interesting life.

“I think that I’m sitting in a different place in my life than I’ve ever been,” she said. “I have the most autonomy. My children are grown. I have my most independence that I’ve ever had. And so, I just am really trying to focus on what really brings me joy. I don’t like to project and say, ‘Well, this is where I want to be,’ because I don’t know. I don’t know where I’m gonna be. But I know that it’s an opportunity for me to actually have a good time!”

(CBS DETROIT) — Dave Coulier, best known as “Uncle Joey” on the ABC sitcom “Full House,” announced Wednesday morning that he has been diagnosed with stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Coulier, a St. Clair Shores nativerevealed the diagnosis on NBC’s “Today,” where he discussed his symptoms and treatment.

The 65-year-old actor and stand-up comedian said he first noticed symptoms in October after coming down with a cold, when he found a large lump in his groin.

“It swelled up immediately,” Coulier said. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’m either really sick, or my body’s really reacting to something.’”

Coulier’s doctors ran several tests and performed a biopsy on the lymph node.

“(My doctors) said, ‘Hey, we wish we had better news, but you have non-Hodgkin lymphoma, B-cell lymphoma,’” Coulier said. “It was a shock.”

Coulier said he’s undergoing six rounds of chemotherapy every 21 days and expects to finish his treatment in February 2025.

“It’s been a bit of a roller coaster. There (are) days where I feel unbelievable,” the actor said. “Then there’s other days where … I’m just going to lay down and let this be what it’s going to be.”

Coulier, who recently appeared over the weekend at Motor City Comic Con in Metro Detroit, says he’s sharing his story in hopes of raising awareness of cancer and encouraging others to consider cancer screenings.

“The one thing that just kept presenting itself to me was to tell other people about it. Talk to them about getting something as simple as pre-screening or a breast exam, mammogram, a colonoscopy or a prostate exam,” he said. “It’s a really simple thing to do and it can add years to your life.”

Are Ryan and Hannah from Mafs UK 2024 still together?

RYAN and Hannah were two of the most controversial contestants on the 2024 series of Married at First Sight (MAFS).

Rumours about a potential romance between the two swirled when they made a dramatic arrival as a couple at the MAFS reunion. But are they still together?

Marital feuds

Both Hannah and Ryan were unlucky-in-love on the dating show, with their relationships with Stephen and Sionainn collapsing on screen.

However, fans were shocked when it was revealed that Hannah and Ryan had been flirting off-camera and that they may have even shared a kiss.

Hannah had previously shocked fans when she kissed another bachelor named Orson.

Stephen later confessed that he had his eye on Ryan’s partner Sionainn, which added another layer to the already confusing love quadrangle.

Bombshell coupling

After they left the show, rumours began to fly which suggested that Ryan and Hannah were still together.

They later added fuel to the fire when they showed up to the reunion as a couple.

A TV source told the Daily Mail: “The entire cast was left open mouthed when Hannah walked into the reunion hand in hand with Ryan.

“She had made a big point about her friendliness being taken the wrong way and how the female members of the group had misjudged her intentions.

“But after kissing Orson in secret and growing close to Ryan off camera, it seems some of the suspicions from her co-stars were accurate.”

Relationship revelation

Despite their bombshell appearance as a couple at the MAFS reunion, Hannah revealed on Instagram that they are just friends.

MAFS UK’s ‘most hated’ bride Hannah hits out at Holly as furious row airs following ‘stealing husbands’ scandal

She said: “Me & Ryan built a really lovely friendship when we both got out of the experiment & that is all it has ever been!

“We have never dated and we have never been in a relationship.

If anybody actually took a minute to ask us we would have both happily confirmed that but no!

Instead it was playground whispers, rumours & a public ambush based off of hearsay YET again!

She continued: “All the other cast built friendships (boys and girls) & were chatting, meeting up, enjoying a little WhatsApp group that we were left out of and as always it was more than ok for everybody else to get friendly-but of course not for me!”

#Shoegate

Hannah also decided to clear up the infamous events of “#shoegate”, which reportedly involved the TV star giving Ryan a “foot massage”.

She took to Instagram to set the record straight.

Hannah posted: “#SHOEGATE. There is only one story here and it’s the truth.

“The truth is this – the entire cast were in a room together the morning after the commitment ceremony.

All of us.

Nobody’s apartment.

“I never stepped foot (no pun intended) in Ryan & Sionainn’s apartment the entire time I was on the experiment.”

Hannah continued by saying that she was confused about whether Ryan was wearing shoes or slippers.

She explained that she then asked him about the shoes and whether or not they had “fluff” inside them.

Hannah continued: “Ryan responded by pulling his foot out of said shoe and saying ‘here have a look’ I then proceeded to touch said shoe and noticed that in fact there was fluff in his shoe confirming they were in fact slippers.

“Me and Ryan politely smiled at each other as he popped his foot back into his slipper and we all went about our day.

LEGO Horizon Adventures Video Review

LEGO Horizon Adventures Video Review

LEGO Horizon Adventures reviewed by Jada Griffin on PlayStation 5. Also available on PC and Nintendo Switch.

LEGO Horizon Adventures reimagines Horizon Zero Dawn with a playful Lego twist, simplifying the story while keeping the heart of its key moments and characters. Combat feels great and offers plenty of difficulty options for players of all skill levels. While the randomness of gadgets and rare weapons can be an annoyance, especially when trying to complete certain challenges, it’s cute that the use-what-you-can-find nature of Horizon has been embraced. There are also plenty of customization options for your characters and the hub town, which was enjoyable as I strived to make Mother’s Heart my own. Couple that with visually impressive levels full of excellent music but disappointingly predictable level design and a lack of extras and I ultimately found myself having fun with LEGO Horizon Adventures even if I was left wanting more.

Full House star Dave Coulier reveals diagnosis with ‘very aggressive’ cancer

Full House star Dave Coulier has revealed that he has been diagnosed with a “very aggressive” form of stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

The 65-year-old actor, who starred as Joey Gladstone on the hit ABC sitcom, shared the news during an appearance on the Today show on Wednesday (November 13).

Coulier said he first discovered symptoms several months ago when he got a cold and then found a large lump on his groin.

“It swelled up immediately,” he recalled. “I thought, ‘Wow, I’m either really sick, or my body’s really reacting to something.’”

He visited the doctor, who shared the shocking diagnosis with him just five weeks ago.

“The first thing I said to them was, ‘Wait a minute – cancer?’” he said. “[I was] feeling like I got punched in the stomach because it never happens to you. You always hear about it happening to someone else.”

Non-Hodgkins lymphoma is a form of cancer that affects the white blood cells, causing them to grow abnormally and can form tumors throughout the body, according to the Mayo Clinic. Stage 3 typically means that the cancer is large and may have spread to surrounding tissues or lymph nodes.

Coulier said he started undergoing rounds of chemotherapy two weeks ago. He shared that he has six rounds of chemo every three weeks and is expected to wrap up treatment by February.

“You hear chemo, and it scares the daylights out of you,” he said. “The first round was pretty intense because you don’t know what to expect. You don’t know how you’re going to feel. Is this going to hit me immediately? Is it going to be devastating? Am I going to walk out of here?”

Describing treatment as “a bit of a roller coaster,” he said: “There [are] days where I feel unbelievable. Then there’s other days where… I’m just going to lay down and let this be what it’s going to be.

“Some days are nauseous and dizzy, and then there’s other days where the steroids kick in, and I feel like I have a ton of energy,” he added. “I actually skated yesterday with some friends here in Detroit. We just went and skated around and shot pucks, and it was wonderful just to be out there doing something that I love and just trying to stay focused on all the great stuff that I have in my life.”

Coulier praised his wife, Melissa Bring Coulier, for her support, sharing that she “organized [his] entire life, from nutrition to the doctor’s appointments to pills.”

“She’s got stuff color-coded. It’s pretty great,” he said.

Bring Coulier is Coulier’s second wife, whom he married in 2014. He was previously married to actor and model Jayne Modean, with whom he shares 33-year-old son Luc.

Coulier is best known for his role as Joey on Full House. He featured in every episode of the eight-season sitcom, which aired from 1987 to 1995. He later reprised his role for the Fuller House spin-off, which ran from 2016 to 2020.
