Whitby: Coastguard rescues person cut off by tides

Multi-agency emergency near cliffs in North Yorkshire town

At around 12.45pm today (January 1), emergency services were seen in West Cliff in Whitby where a person was reported to be in distress.

Two RNLI lifeboats were launched and HM Coastguard sent crews to Whitby Pavilion and also sent up and search and rescue helicopter.

Fire and Rescue crews and ambulances were also reported at the scene and an area was cordoned off as crews prepared to abseil down from the cliff top.

A HM Coastguard spokesperson said: “We responded to an incident involving a person cut off by the tide at the base of West Cliff, Whitby today (Thursday 1 January).

“Alerted shortly after midday, coastguard rescue teams from Whitby and Staithes were sent alongside an HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter and RNLI lifeboats from Whitby.

“North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire Police were also in attendance.

“The person was brought to safety by a Coastguard rope rescue technician and assessed by Yorkshire Ambulance Service.”
