ALL Female Models From Every Warhammer 40k Starter Set- Painting Challenge! (All 10 Editions)

Let’s Look at ALL of the Warhammer 40,000 edition starter boxes and paint all of the female miniatures! This journey spans 4 decades and some really cool models 🙂 These legendary starter kits are foundational to the whole industry!

From 10 editions of 40k there have been 8 classic starter boxes- Rogue Trader didn’t have a box, and 6th and 7th were both championed by the Dark Vengeance box. These 8 big boxes are absolute classics. They form foundational memories for a lot of us, and the majority of all demo games ever played in the history of Warhammer 40k have been played with minis from these sets. The two factions from these big boxes always become the mascots of the edition, and they get included in a variety of somewhat smaller starter kits at various price points.

Yeah that day will never come. The repercussions to GW would be far too great and then you'll realise how much of a minority you really are.

To be honest, I think given the type and quantity of modifications involved in making a space marine, you could forego the boob armour and would only stand a chance of telling when they take their helmets off. I doubt we’d be looking at a sci fi version of stormcast females.

I know that you do address this point in the video but I would contend that the bigger issue is the ubiquity of space marines, especially when they are such a minority of the Imperium’s armed forces. I don’t think it is a bad thing thematically and narratively to have none inclusive factions as long as the game on the whole is inclusive. Particularly when one of the broader factions is such a nightmarish, oppressive regime even though they are the “good” guys.

Promoting factions such as Sisters, Eldar and Imperial Guard with female soldiers makes more sense to me than rewriting an army that is so heavily inspired by historically non-inclusive groups as well (and as you say it’s not like the Sisters are going to start letting dudes in). Keeping some factions non-inclusive and backwards also gives you something to contrast the more progressive ones with.

I would rather my armies be unique than have representation. I want female models I'll get the army that has female models and if I want to go crusading with the bois and play the boys are back in town in my head every time I go on the battle field I'll stick the the marines.

Now realized, i subconsciously trended to the 2 human factions with females. I run my cadian guard using every single female bit – regular men and women fighting the forces of hell is just awesome. A female sergeant with a drum-fed autogun or female vox-caster is as badass as it can get. Also love my sisters army. More female models in the hobby please!

….late 20th hunderts, but good video anyways
And yeah, the one aeldari is bloody disappointing
If they release a sororitas starter box, I might actually start collecting a full army and not just the best minis from all of 40k
Which in my opinion are mostly SoB on the side of the Empire
    Damn angels

I am literally shaking. How can you actually LIKE the sisters of battle? They promote a heteronormative reinforcement of the gender binary and fascist beauty standards. Their small waists and sculpted breasts are clearly intended for the male gaze. Also, words like “sister” and “nun” are problematic because not only do they assume the fascist gender binary, they also allude to oppressive Christian cultural elements. Also, their cultural aesthetic is clearly inspired by the eurocentric Roman Catholic Church, which has oppressed women for thousands of years by not supporting marriages between lesbian women of size.
I personally, being a male-presenting human of progress and equality, will not EVER support the Sisters of Battle until they are sculpted EXACTLY THE SAME as primaris space marine bodies with conventionally unattractive female heads.

Can't believe I didn't comment on this before. Or at least I didn't see a comment from me. The only observation I would make is the starter kits are limited in what they can release vis a vis combatants. That is, one set is always going to be Space Marines and they will always be male. So the other set has to be a threat to the Imperium. The hoards of Orks, (Genderless) and Tyranids (They have "females". You just don't want to see one in a bikini) and Chaos Marines who came from Space Marines. But while there are limitations on the starter sets, there have been other box set in which the girls participated. Maybe a piece on these is in order..

"No girls in the Space Marine tree house" is making me want to do the Space Marine equivalent of G.R.O.S.S. (Get Rid Of Slimy girlS) from Calvin and Hobbes.

And then make a Susie Marine, obviously.

I am fine with the "no female space marines" in-universe rule, mainly because I think it would completely undermine the creative work put into sisters of battle if we had female space marines. The in-universe reason of adhering to the letter of some arbitrary bureaucracy rule of "no men under arms" is so fitting for a setting that parodies bureaucracy to the extreme. I think the reason for why this topic comes up again and again, is that space marines just get too, much, fucking, attention. And that ie. the guard or sisters don't have enough diversity in terms of look. I'd love to see an all steel legion, catachan or mordian guard range. Or some new sisters from a far off galaxy twith their own look, distinct from the current sisters.

But I also think that the problem is that people want attractive, or female-looking space marines, which I don't think is possible with the in-universe way space marines are created. Pump enough testosterone and steroids into anyone, AND put them in giant power armor and it'll be impossible to tell who they are regardless of their gender. But I also like the headcannon of there could be or are female space marines, but they are basically indistinguishable from male space marines.
And besides, nothing is stopping you from kitbashing your own female space marines (age of sigmar bodies make for great space marines with a head/arm swap). And if someone doesn't want to play you because you play a mixed or all female chapter? Maybe it isn't someone you should play anyway.

There aren't Female Space Marines though and the lore has been pretty clear about that. Don't know why you keep pandering to a small crowd who wants to turn a hobby people play to escape or to take a break into a cheap and lazy political statement.

  19. @barrycopithorne

    September 22, 2024 at 4:33 pm

I know someone here probably pointed this all out, but my only gripe is why destroy the lore for inclusion/diversity? There is endless diversity and inclusion everywhere in 40k. And plus it's Grim Dark. And you got literally so many woman in every part of the galaxy in pretty much every faction except Space Marines and Orks/gobbos. There are multiple all woman factions as well. No men allowed. But oh hell there's an only male faction like the Space Marines so we got to put woman in there. Like why? Why can't there be an all male faction? Money wise female models also don't sell well. And many woman are not into these hobbies. Even the first time Games Workshop released female models they had to drop them because they wouldn't sell.
Also from how Space marines are made, woman can't exist within the Space Marines due to the Emperors biology. That means woman are being injected with male genes now? How is it scientifically possible, that woman can survive let alone infuse, absorb, or genetically be altered with male genetics? The old technology the Emperor used is gone. So basically no one knows fully how the Emperor did create all his children. All male. As well. Cause of the Geneseed, his genetics and biology. And the remaining Primarchs are literally the only ones with the ability to make more. As far as I understand it. When you change such a hardcore piece of lore for inclusion and diversity (Like many others that this has been done to), the story and writing gets really globby. Creates plot holes that are not fun to look at. And the lore no longer makes sense. All the books, and stories are now false? I got into Warhammer 40k cause its so vast and amazing. And today with these lore changes it doesn't sit well with me. Literally new player and fan here in 40k. I am even against the lore changes. And it's not because of any labels being shoved like misogynist etc. It's because the lore is so damn good. It's perfect. The story is unlike any I have seen before and its vastly different from any out there. To change it, like Star Wars, and the same points in Doctor Who makes the franchise and story garbage. Sorry but its true. It's no longer fun to read. No longer fun to play. And the plot holes make it not make sense. Literally make it make sense?

The only way I can see woman being space marines is Tzeentch. And the story from that in how he did it must be good. Really damn good.

Fun (Grim) Fact I was reminded of by that illustration of a woman holding up a decapitated head in the Rogue Trader book, you can't carry a real decapitated head by the hair. Once a human head is detached the scalp will just come off if you try to hold it by the hair. Once I learned this a lot of movie scenes became unintentionally hilarious to me because I can't help but imagine the big scary warrior getting wigged out by the head falling but the hair remaining in their hand.

Sidenote: Even when I started playing 3ed as a 12 year old it bugged me that they sculpted boobs into the armor. Even if you were to just put on layers of gamison (cloth armor), it's so padded you can't tell if boobs. Like, nevermind modern combat armor, even the historic armor with the least coverage will completely compress a woman's breast… On the other hand, at least I've never had to listen to someone explain why the entirely fictional universe's space pirates has to have a "no girls" sign on the clubhouse like with the child soldiers.

Side-side-sidenote: There's been female space marines since Rogue Trader. They are some of the worst sculpts in GW history, but as GW never actually de-canonizes anything that means there are still, and have always been, FSM.

  21. @nuke2099

    September 22, 2024 at 4:33 pm

I'm probably the type of person you would call a bigot because I disagree with what some would say etc so I have a compromise. GW should make separate official female bits for the factions/races that are applicable and allow people to get hold of them easily and as cheaply as possible or include them in all the applicable boxes which should happen anyway.

And make a new Eldar vs Dark Eldar set with new and better miniatures for either gender for both of those factions. Also maybe GW should cool it and let other factions shine in a new edition set or at least any set. I also think that some of the female models I have seen for Eldar specifically Dark Eldar should look better and have better sculpts.

Overall I do think that inclusion for the sake of it is a bad thing and I don't think everyone needs to be represented for anyone to find interest in the hobby although there's lots of representation in 40k anyway especially since Humans span a billion worlds in the setting. Example being me starting with LoTR models GW was making at the time through a weekly magazine and finding the GW site through that and my first 40k models were Tyranids.

Be careful. Representation leads to inclusion. Inclusion leads to girls. Girls lead to cooties.

Why men need female role models | Gesu Antonio Baez | TEDxDeiraWomen

International Humanitarian Gesu Antonio Báez goes into the controversy that is role models, particularly for men, and how it’s time that men confess to having a female role model. All too often, a women’s greatness is blocked because of her gender and Báez argues how it’s time that men look beyond the woman and discover the person instead to inspire them, as he clearly explains through the example of his own role model.

Gesu Antonio Baez is a Humanitarian and Development Professional, with an interest in diplomacy and human rights for women. Currently, he serves as the International Development Coordinator for the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG), overseeing a multi-regional development program and working with key governments and partners on an aim to improve women’s health via medical training. In 2014, he was named by UN Women Empower Women as Champion Rep for Women’s Economic Empowerment, which led him to co-found and create with his team the year long “I am (Wo)Man” campaign. Originally from New York City but of Italian and Dominican origin, he’s currently based in London, United Kingdom.
