The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has introduced a new “single-pole digital bus stop” concept to modernize public transport while easing long-standing sidewalk congestion. The compact structure replaces bulky shelters with a slim vertical pole that delivers real-time travel information without reducing pedestrian space.

The new format addresses the city’s narrow sidewalks, where conventional bus shelters have proven impractical for decades. Each pole integrates digital screens displaying live bus arrival times, route maps with destination details, and improved lighting, in accordance with the city’s public safety policy, to enhance nighttime visibility.

A pilot phase is underway at five locations in the Bangkapi area, including sites near The Mall Bangkapi, Bangkapi Market, and Ramkhamhaeng University. Installation work is still ongoing at some stops as electrical systems and equipment are completed ahead of full operation.

The development of the system involves collaboration among several public agencies and private partners, including the Department of Land Transport, the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, TSB, Bangkok City Lab, ViaBus, and Mayday! 

The BMA plans to extend the upgraded bus stop system to 500 additional locations across the city, incorporating public feedback into further improvements. By 2026, more than 1,100 bus stops are expected to feature complete digital information systems, making public transport clearer, more accessible, and easier to use.
