Arsenal enjoyed a free-spending summer transfer window and have reaped the rewards, but the Gunners could yet part with more cash in January
Arsenal have the capacity to spend well over £100million in January, according to a football finance expert. The Gunners have enjoyed a strong first half of the Premier League season after an expensive summer.
Mikel Arteta’s side flexed their monetary muscles in the previous transfer window, bringing in six new players for a rough total of £255m. The headline acts were new marksman Viktor Gyokeres and playmaker Eberechi Eze, who added to an already potent strikeforce.
Owner Stan Kroenke was able to sanction such moves after a lucrative few years. Since 2021, his net worth has shot up from £6.4billion to a staggering £17.7bn, an increase of 175 per cent.
However, regardless of their summer window, Arsenal are still in a position where if they wish, they can spend heavily once again now the January window is open. That’s according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire.
“We haven’t seen their financial results for this year yet, but they will have a lot of headroom from a PSR point of view,” Maguire exclusively told Mirror Football.

“Arsenal have got plenty of wiggle room in January. Yes, they signed players in the summer, but even so, compared to some of the other clubs, it wasn’t excessive.
“They have got Champions League participation as well. That is the big one. The Champions League has never been worth as much money as it is at present and it’s where all of the growth is. The Premier League is sort of flatlining.
“Champions League, with the new deal that’s come in with the Swiss model… it’s simple things. Every match that you win is worth £2million. Arsenal have had a fantastic start to the competition already.
“So if Arsenal wanted to spend, they could spend far in excess of £100million. I think the issue is whether players are available who are not cup-tied from a Champions League point of view.
“Arsenal are very strong financially. Their losses in the last couple of years were £70m and under the Premier League rules you are allowed to lose £105m. So again, they have got plenty of headroom. A very smart club.”
Whether the Gunners will secure any new signings in the January transfer window is another question, however. Last January, Arteta’s side were content with their summer business and did not welcome a single new arrival.
They did pursue a striker, though they opted to wait until the summer to secure Gyokeres from Sporting CP, signing him for an initial £55.5m that could rise if certain conditions are met.
It could be said that their dry January in 2025 enabled them to part with so much come the summer, when they were one of the top-five biggest net spenders in world football with a £250m-plus haul.
