Debate was sparked on social media when a travel fan asked if it was necessary to do your skincare while on board a plane – and a pilot weighed in with his thoughts
It’s not unusual to see people wearing collagen masks on the plane nowadays. While it may look strange, some believe they’ll leave the plane with fresh and glowing skin.
However, is this skincare step actually necessary? Flight attendant and author Heather Poole sparked the conversation on Threads, questioning why travellers opt to apply these masks mid-journey. In her viral post, she asked: “Thoughts on passengers wearing collagen face masks on planes?”
Collagen face masks are liquid-soaked strips typically placed beneath the eyes to help the skin appear firmer. Available in various colours, these masks can give wearers an unusual appearance, almost as though their face is melting. But it could actually be worth looking a bit silly.
That’s because plane cabins have very low humidity (often below 20%), which can quickly dehydrate your skin. Collagen masks are soaked in hydrating serums that help replenish moisture and prevent dryness.
As well as this, the products are known to support skin elasticity and firmness. They also have a cooling effect that can soothe skin that may become irritated or sensitive during a flight, especially if you’re prone to redness or inflammation.
People tend to opt for sheet masks rather than taking bigger skincare items because they’ll take up less space in your hand luggage. Even better, you can throw them away when you’re done with them instead of lugging them around everywhere.
So should you get a collagen mask for next time you travel? The discussion, initiated by Heather, attracted 1,200 responses, including one from a pilot named Captain Bobble.
He posted a photo of himself wearing collagen masks, which shows that even the professionals enjoy dabbling with in-flight skincare routines! Alongside the image, Bobbie wrote: “It’s literally in the descent checklist. I don’t know what to tell you.”
His skincare routine mid-flight has been well received, with more than 90,000 people liking his response. One amused user commented: “Set flaps to MOISTURISED.”
Another quipped: “Gotta look hot for your post-flight strut through the airport.” And a third chimed in: “We are landing the plane HYDRATED. They should teach this in flight school.”
How to apply a face mask on the plane
Before boarding or in the plane loos, gently cleanse your face to remove oil, dirt, and makeup. Then, you’ll be ready to apply the mask after take off.
Opt for a sheet mask or hydrogel mask that fits your face snugly. Collagen masks with added hyaluronic acid are especially hydrating. Apply the mask according to the package instructions, smoothing out air bubbles for maximum contact.
After removing the mask, massage any leftover serum into your face, neck, and even hands. If you want to take things a step further, you can even lock in the hydration with an extra lightweight moisturiser or facial oil.
