Lions acquire DE Za’Darius Smith from Browns to bolster pass rush

Lions acquire DE Za’Darius Smith from Browns to bolster pass rush

The Detroit Lions, coming off a 24-14 road win against the Green Bay Packers, made a big move ahead of the trade deadline. On Tuesday morning, Detroit reportedly acquired veteran defensive end Za’Darius Smith and a 2026 seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick.

It hasn’t been much of a secret that the Lions, who sit atop the NFC at 7-1, have been looking to bolster their pass rush as they aim to make a Super Bowl run. Last week, head coach Dan Campbell even hinted that Detroit could be close to swinging a deal.

Not only did the Lions lose star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson for the season, but Marcus Davenport, John Cominsky and Derrick Barnes are on injured reserve as well. Hutchinson, who hasn’t played since Week 6, still leads the team in sacks with 7.5.

The 32-year-old Smith could change that. This season, he’s started every game for the Browns, who fell to 2-7 on Sunday, and recorded five sacks and six tackles for loss.

In his 10 seasons in the NFL, Smith has totaled double-digit sacks three times, most recently in 2022 with the Minnesota Vikings. This will be his third stop in the NFC North, after he spent three seasons with the Packers and one with the Vikings.

FA Cup: How video games will help Harborough Town prepare for Reading

The Southern League Premier Central club have never faced an English Football League (EFL) side in a competitive match.

They beat fellow non-league team Tonbridge Angels 4-1 on Saturday in the Bees’ first appearance in the FA Cup first round.

Post-match celebrations in Kent were euphoric on Saturday, and those scenes were matched a day later at the Bees’ clubhouse in Market Harborough when players, staff and supporters watched live as they were drawn against Reading.

“It was bouncing in there – we are all over the moon. What a draw. It’s special,” Daire told BBC Radio Leicester.

“When Reading came out, it was just joy. And now, you can tell with my voice, I’m like a kid at Christmas, I’m so excited.”

“We have done what we needed to around the local leagues, and we wanted the big test against a League One team where we can go out there and test ourselves and enjoy it.”

The FA Cup second round will be played between Friday, 29 November and Monday, 2 December 2024.

Neymar injured in second game back for Al-Hilal

Neymar has played down concerns after picking up a fresh injury in his second appearance for Al-Hilal following a year out.

The 32-year-old Brazil striker was substituted 86 minutes into the Saudi Arabian club’s 3-0 win against Iranian side Esteghlal in the Asian Champions League Elite on Monday.

“It felt like a cramp, only very strong. I’m going to have some tests and I hope it’s nothing too serious,” the Brazilian said on Instagram.

“It’s normal for this to happen after a year. The doctors had already warned me, so I have to be careful and play more minutes.”

Neymar had a prolonged spell on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament during Brazil’s World Cup qualifier against Uruguay in October 2023.

He has played only seven matches for Al-Hilal since his move from Paris St-Germain in August 2023.
