Ellie the cat went missing in January 2024, and her family was ‘very emotional’ over the year she went missing.

A cat “full of character” has returned home after vanishing for nearly a year. Miroslava Borisova, who lives in Stanground, Peterborough, has cared for her cat Ellie since she was 10 weeks old.

On January 21, 2024, Miroslava returned home from work and didn’t see Ellie hop over the fence to greet her as she normally would. “I came back from work and when she didn’t come, I thought something was wrong,” said Miroslava.

She added: “Ellie is a cat full of character. She knows her own space and doesn’t really like people touching her. I have tried to cuddle her but she will scratch me, but she’s still my baby. [When she went missing] I started to look around for her but she wasn’t there.”

For the first few weeks Ellie was missing, Miroslava said she was “very emotional”. She added: “In the first week, I would walk around trying to look for her and call her name, but nothing happened. The first few weeks I would cry. My daughter was very emotional as well.”

As the year went on, Miroslava didn’t give the hope that Ellie would return home. She said: “I didn’t stop thinking about her. Everyday I thought about her.”

While playing games with friends on December 29, Miroslava received a call she wasn’t expecting. She said: “I got a call and heard them say vet and I started to shake. I started crying and I left straight away to go get her.”

It turned out nine months before she was found, Ellie was in Fletton. A person, who told Miroslava that Ellie was in a “bad condition”, tried to get close to Ellie for two months.

Eventually the person got close enough to feed her. Not knowing if Ellie had an owner, the person rehomed Ellie to another family.

Ellie was later taken to the vet, and her microchip was found with Miroslava’s details. Miroslava said: “The first 24 hours back home she was sleeping.

“The first hour she was a bit stressed, but she eventually knew her house. She is now ok. She is now calm and sleeping.”

Since Ellie went missing, Mirsolava got two other cats to “fill an empty”. She added that Ellie is starting to get used to them.

She added: “The most important thing for me is for people with a missing pet that it could happen. I have seen others that had cats return after three or four years and I was jealous. Just don’t give up hope.”
