Manchester United travel to face old foes Leeds United on Sunday with the January transfer window now open

Manchester United will be hoping to get back to winning ways when they face old rivals Leeds United on Sunday. The Red Devils have endured an up-and-down run of form over Christmas, with one win, a draw and a loss in their last three games.

After a tough 2-1 away defeat to Aston Villa in mid-December, Ruben Amorim’s side looked to have turned the tide with a Boxing Day victory against Newcastle, which continued their impressive festive record. However, a 1-1 draw with bottom-placed Wolves – who picked up just their third point of the season in the draw at Old Trafford – derailed United’s momentum.

It’s Leeds up next on Sunday, before a visit to Burnley and an FA Cup third round tie against Brighton. Then it’s the small matter of back-to-back games against Manchester City and Arsenal as the Red Devils look to kick on up the table.

Ruben Amorim’s January transfer stance

Ruben Amorim has confirmed that there aren’t any plans for United to make changes in the January transfer window. The Portuguese boss spoke ahead of the Leeds showdown and admits his team are in a good place – but things can change quickly.

Amorim said: “The transfer window is not going to change. We have no conversation to have any change in the squad. There is a process, there is an idea – that is going to continue.

“We are near places of the Champions League but we are also near eight teams behind us.”

When asked if any current United player has requested to leave, the 40-year-old shut down the notion of any planned departures.

He added: “No, none of them. I don’t expect them to come to me to ask [to leave].”

Kobbie Mainoo U-turn

Kobbie Mainoo is adamant he will be successful at Manchester United despite reports linking him to an Old Trafford exit. The academy star made an incredible start to his career at Old Trafford under Erik ten Hag but his relationship with Amorim has not been the same.

According to The Sun, the working relationship between Mainoo’s camp and Amorim was strained even before the midfielder’s half-brother wore a ‘Free Kobbie Mainoo’ T-shirt at Old Trafford in December 2025.

Despite this – and links to other clubs – Mainoo made something of a U-turn and is determined to revive his United career. Amorim has made it clear the 20-year-old is going nowhere, having blocked the chance of a loan move last summer and now confirmed that he doesn’t plan on losing any of his squad in January.

Mainoo will hope to gain important minutes upon his return from injury as England gear up for the World Cup in the summer. The midfielder may see a route to Thomas Tuchel’s squad if he can somehow force his way into Amorim’s plans during the second half of the season.
