A1 Blaydon Bridge: Drivers warned of daytime lane closures
Between January and June 2026, National Highways will undertake maintenance on Blaydon Bridge, which spans the River Tyne and carries the A1.
A spokesperson from National Highways said: “We are replacing underhanging drainage on the Blaydon Bridge which carries A1 over the Tyne and A6085/National Cycle network route 73.”
While most of the work will take place underneath the bridge, National Highways have warned there will be occasional lane closures on the A1 mainline during weekday daytime hours.
Access to the Chainbridge Road retail park may also be affected at times, so shoppers are advised to plan their journeys carefully.
National Highways said the work is part of ongoing maintenance to ensure the bridge and drainage system remain safe and functional.
Drivers, shoppers, and cyclists using Route 73 should also be aware of possible temporary disruptions next year while the work is being carried out.
