Man, 25, charged after police assaulted on New Year's Day

The officers were processing a man in custody in Tameside after they suspected him of breaching security at Manchester Airport, where he was detained.

Two sergeants and a custody officer suffered injuries and all three were taken to hospital. They have since been discharged.

Now, a 25-year-old man has been charged with four offences following the incident.

Muiz Olatunji, of no fixed abode, has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, one count of common assault and one count of assault by beating of an emergency worker.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court today (Saturday, January 3).

Superintendent Helen Caldbeck previously said: “Assaults on officers and staff, particularly when they’ve been serving the public over Christmas and New Year, is simply not acceptable.

“Emergency workers are serving the public and trying to keep people safe during the festive season and should not have to go to hospital when they are doing their jobs.

“Thankfully, they are all recovering from their injuries.

“We will be progressing this case and want to send a clear message that we will not accept this behaviour.”
