Laver Cup: Team Europe edge out Team World to win 2024 title
Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz sealed a straight-set win against American Taylor Fritz to lead Team Europe to a 13-11 victory at the Laver Cup in Berlin.
Team World had led 11-7 going into the penultimate match in the first-to-13 competition.
But with three points available for each win on day three, German Alexander Zverev’s 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 10-5 win over American Frances Tiafoe reduced World’s lead to a single point and forced a deciding match.
Alcaraz, who criticised the congested tennis schedule on Saturday, completed the thrilling comeback with a 6-2 7-5 triumph.
“We came here with a goal, all of us, to win the Laver Cup,” Alcaraz said.
“I’m really happy. We are happy about reaching our goal.”
“It has been a tough one, we almost lost, but Sascha [Zverev] came with some really good tennis.”
On day one, Argentina’s Francisco Ceralundo set World on their way with a win over Norway’s Casper Ruud, but Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas hit back when seeing off Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis.
Europe moved into the lead when Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov beat Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo, however, the day ended level at 2-2 with American pair Fritz and Ben Shelton seeing off Alcaraz and Zverev in the doubles.
World claimed six of the eight points on offer during day two, opening up an 8-4 advantage.
Alcaraz was the only player to register a win for Europe on Saturday as Tiafoe and Fritz ran out winners in the singles, with Shelton and Tabilo delivering in the doubles.
The final day of action started positively for Europe, who lost 13-2 in 2023, with Ruud and Alcaraz combining to add three points to their tally in the doubles.
Shelton saw off Russia’s Daniil Medvedev in match 10 to put World on the brink of victory with only two points required to reach the target of 13.
Zverev found his groove at just the right time, winning his first match of the week to set up a decider.
And world number three Alcaraz, making his Laver Cup debut, held his nerve to get Europe over the line at the expense of US Open runner-up Fritz.
The inaugural Laver Cup took place in 2017 and Europe have now won five of the seven editions contested.

Sarah Storey beat Paralympic rival Heidi Gaugain to win gold in the women’s C4-C5 individual time trial at the 2024 Para-cycling Road World Championships in Switzerland.
Storey, 46, completed the 29.9km course in 45 minutes 25 seconds to finish one minute 36 seconds ahead of France’s Gaugain and win her 38th Para world title.
It was a successful title defence for Storey, who won this event in Glasgow last year.
“To hit out the way I did, I was really chuffed. The course was so much fun,” Storey told BBC Sport.
“It was great and I was really glad I had the legs to put in the performance as well.”
In the women’s B individual time trial, Ireland’s Katie-George Dunlevy, alongside pilot Linda Kelly, were victorious. They finished in a time of 43:14.
It was a British second and third, with Sophie Unwin, alongside pilot Jenny Holl, placing second and Lora Fachie, with pilot Corrine Hall, third.

Bayern Munich maintained their flawless start in the Bundesliga with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Werder Bremen.
Harry Kane scored just the one goal, but it was a significant one. Kane’s strike made him the top scoring English player in the history of the Bundesliga.
The England captain’s goal moved him above Jadon Sancho, who scored 40 Bundesliga goals for Borussia Dortmund.
However, it was the performance of Michael Olise – who scored twice against Bremen – which got the juices flowing for Bayern boss Vincent Kompany.
Olise, who joined Bayern in a £50m deal from Crystal Palace, has been in scintillating form with five goals in his past three games in all competitions.
“Michael did very well. He’s a special talent. It’s a luxury at Bayern to have so many good players,” Kompany said after the game.
“His start at Bayern couldn’t be much better. He has to keep going this way. I haven’t got the feeling that he’s a player who feels much pressure. He just enjoys football.”
Bayern have scored 29 goals under Kompany – a new club record for the first six competitive matches of a coach since the Bundesliga was founded.
No wonder Kompany allowed Bayern’s players – including Kane, Olise and Jamal Musiala – to don their lederhosen and enjoy the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest festival.
Champions Bayer Leverkusen remain a point behind Bayern after a dramatic 4-3 victory over Wolfsburg.
Victor Boniface scored in the third minute of injury time for Leverkusen, with midfielder Granit Xhaka calling the match a “a giant wake-up call” before next Saturday’s showdown with Bayern.
“We can’t keep going with performances like that. We can’t defend so naively. Sure, we scored four but we can’t do that every weekend,” Xhaka said.
Elsewhere, Borussia Dortmund were thrashed 5-1 by Stuttgart, while newly promoted Holstein Kiel got their first-ever Bundesliga point after a 2-2 draw at Bochum.
