Could Ruben Amorim be Man Utd’s next Sir Alex Ferguson? Eerie similarity between both appointments emerges
RUBEN AMORIM is the latest man tasked with leading Manchester United back to glory.
The 39-year-old became the new United head coach last week following Erik ten Hag‘s departure.
Ten Hag was sacked following a poor start to the season, with the club struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Amorim quickly emerged as the priority target for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and penned a two-and-a-half year deal just a matter of days later.
The ex-Portugal midfielder will officially take the reins on November 11 – but he faces the huge challenge of hauling Man Utd up the Prem table and through the Europa League group stage.
Despite the sheer weight of the task, he can look to legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson for inspiration.
When the United icon first took over at Old Trafford back in 1986, the Red Devils had just 12 points from 10 league games.
At the time, Ferguson had only managed in Scotland.
Now, with Amorim about to step in, Man Utd sit 13th in the table with 12 points from 10 games.
And similarly, the ex-midfielder has only managed in Portugal.

Amorim jokingly compared himself to Ferguson when looking ahead to Sporting Lisbon’s Champions League clash with Manchester City on Monday.
He said: “The focus is on winning the game for Sporting, after that, the inferences that people will draw from this game are not important to me because they could be misleading.
“If the result is negative, expectations will drop; if we win they will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived!
“What interests me is to win, a good farewell in Alvalade, win in Braga and start a new adventure in Manchester.
“What I want is to leave the fans and my players happy for what is to come in the new season.”
Ruben Amorim is ‘Mourinho 2.0’ who turned Sporting from ‘walking dead’ into Portuguese champs… he can revive Man Utd
WHEN Ruben Amorim took charge of Sporting Lisbon in March 2020, one club official compared their situation to the “walking dead”, writes Jordan Davies.
Optimism and hope was at an all-time low.
But the Amorim-effect was almost instantaneous, guiding the Portuguese sleeping giants to their first league title for 19 years in 2020/21, losing just once and only conceding 20 goals.
Since then, Sporting have lifted another league title in 2023/24 – as well as two League Cups – and currently sit top with nine wins from nine this term.
He may be young, but Amorim already has an eye for rebuilding and revitalising fallen super powers with his infectious charisma and intense tactical philosophy that hardly ever wavers.
The “walking dead” at Manchester United must be praying for a similar sort of revival.
And they may just get it from one of the most talented young coaches on the continent – a man accustomed to breathing new life back into crumbling institutions such as Old Trafford.
Amorim has spent the last decade dreaming of one day gracing England’s Premier League, such was his admiration for an ex-United boss in Jose Mourinho growing up.
Often nicknamed ‘Mourinho 2.0’, Amorim spent a week with his coaching idol in an internship capacity at United’s Carrington training base in 2018, going on to cite him as his “reference point”.
United should not be expecting a mini-Mourinho, as Amorim said himself: “Mourinho is one of a kind. There won’t be another Mourinho. Mourinho is unique.”
And yet, you cannot help but compare the two.
For all the mismanagement in the Old Trafford hot seats over the years, this would be a real get – finally a slap in the face United’s Prem rivals have no answer for.

NBA results: Cleveland Cavaliers beat Milwaukee Bucks to match franchise record
The Cleveland Cavaliers matched a franchise record by winning their first eight games of the season as they edged a 116-114 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Cavaliers matched a record set in 1976-77 with a win in which Darius Garland scored a game-high 39 points against a Bucks side without the injured Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Garland sank a three-pointer with 45 seconds left and then set up Jarrett Allen for a lay-up with 12.2 seconds remaining to secure the win.
“It’s hard to get one [win] so eight is crazy,” Garland said.
Damian Lillard scored 36 points for the Bucks, who were 106-98 up with just over six minutes left, but could not prevent his side losing a sixth game in a row.
Cleveland had also beaten the Bucks 114-113 on Saturday when Donovan Mitchell scored with 0.3 seconds left.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are also unbeaten this season as they won a seventh successive game by beating the Orlando Magic 102-86.
Jalen Williams scored 23 points for the Thunder, while team-mate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 21 points.
Elsewhere, Stephen Curry returned from a three-game absence to help the Golden State Warriors beat the Washington Wizards 125-112.
Curry was back after spraining his left ankle and scored 24 points against the Wizards as the Warriors improved their record to 4-0 on the road.
The Detroit Pistons ended a seven-game losing run with a 115-103 win against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Jaden Ivey scored 26 points while Pistons team-mate Cade Cunningham registered a triple-double of 17 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Lakers’ Anthony Davis, who continued to play in the fourth quarter after appearing to be troubled by an ankle issue, led all scorers with 37 points.
Kevin Durant scored 35 points to inspire the Phoenix Suns to a 118-116 victory against the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Boston Celtics beat the Atlanta Hawks 123-93.

New Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim to be handed instant injury boost as £60m ace set for first-team return
RUBEN AMORIM is set to be handed an instant injury boost when he finally takes charge at Manchester United after Mason Mount returned to first-team training.
The Portuguese boss has been confirmed as Erik ten Hag’s successor at Old Trafford.
But he will not be taking the reins until after November’s international break.
It means the current Sporting Lisbon chief has plenty of time to prep for his first game against Ipswich Town as interim gaffer Ruud van Nistelrooy takes charge of fixtures with PAOK and Leicester.
And Amorim is sure to be running his eye over United’s talented, yet underperforming, squad.
He certainly won’t be short on options after Ten Hag was provided with £200million-worth of new stars over the summer.
But one forgotten ace is also set to rejoin the pack, with Mount returning to full training after missing the whole of October with injury.
Mount was signed from Chelsea a year ago for £55m.
Now 25, he should be hitting his peak after leading the Blues to the Champions League and Club World Cup.
But Mount has been hit by numerous injury problems at United and so far has just one goal in 25 outings.

The England star will be desperate to relive his Stamford Bridge glory days at Old Trafford.
And he could be one of the beneficiaries of Amorim’s new 3-4-3 formation, which sees two versatile forwards sit either side of the striker.
Mount played a similar role on the right at Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel.
But he will first need to prove his fitness while also convincing Amorim that he is more deserving of a place in the forward line than the likes of Marcus Rashord, Bruno Fernandes or Alejandro Garnacho.

NFL: Patrick Mahomes helps Kansas City Chiefs maintain unbeaten start
Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes shook off a late injury scare as his side won 30-24 in overtime against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to continue their unbeaten start to the season.
Mahomes threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns without an interception while running back Kareem Hunt claimed a two-yard game-winning touchdown to take the Chiefs, playing at home, to 8-0.
Mahomes, a three-time Super Bowl winner, had rolled his ankle in a win over the Las Vegas Raiders last week and was left limping again after escaping pressure to send a touchdown pass to Samaje Perine that pulled the Chiefs level at 17-17 early in the fourth quarter.
The 29-year-old needed help to get to the sideline, but after treatment he returned to hit DeAndre Hopkins with a five-yard touchdown pass that put the reigning Super Bowl champions 24-17 up with four minutes and 17 seconds remaining.
Tampa Bay responded when quarterback Baker Mayfield controlled the game, leading to a touchdown from Ryan Miller and when the Bucs opted not to go for a two-point conversion and the lead, the extra-point kick tied it at 24-24.
Kansas City’s final drive in regulation failed to yield anything, but they got the ball to start overtime with Mahomes guiding them to the game-winning score as the Bucs suffered a fourth defeat in their past five games.

Erling Haaland to join Real Madrid if Manchester City agree to swap…- The Week
Erling Haaland can join Real Madrid from Manchester City if the two European giants can agree on a swap deal, reports said. The Premier League champions are likely to be offered Real Madrid’s proven Brazilian attacker if they are interested in an exchange.
Erling Haaland has openly claimed that he has no intentions of retiring at the Etihad and was open to transfers in future. Real Madrid is a dream destination for most high-profile footballers and the Norwegian has never showed any lack of respect for the “Kings of Europe.”
Vinicius Jr or Rodrygo: Who will be sold?
The Brazilian duo of Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo Goes remain at the heart of Real Madrid’s attack despite the arrival of Kylian Mbappe from PSG. Ballon d’Or runner-up Vinicius’s availability means French superstar Mbappe is forced to play as a Centre Forward rather than his preferred left-wing for the Los Blancos. Rodrygo, meanwhile operates on the right wing, if not as a CF.
Real Madrid is not willing to swap Vinicius Jr for Haaland, although earlier reports suggested Saudi clubs willing to offer ridiculous sums to get the winger. With his Ballon d’Or dream remaining unfulfilled, it is unlikely that Vini will make a switch to the Saudi Pro League for money.
Rodrygo’s story, meanwhile, is different. According to Spanish media reports, Manchester City gaffer Pep Guardiola is impressed with him and would like to link him up with fellow Brazilian Savinho.
The Middle-East-funded English champions had made plans to make a €150m (£127m) bid’ for the Real Madrid attacker. Carlo Ancelotti-managed Real, on the other hand, has plans to make an offer worth 200 million euros (£168m) for Haaland, football365.com said quoting multiple Spanish reports. It is in the backdrop of this scenario that the possibility of a player swap has emerged.

Neymar limps off and fumes on sidelines after lasting just 30 minutes on comeback from horror ACL injury
NEYMAR limped off with a new injury less than 30 minutes into his return from a horror ACL setback.
The ace was forced to go under the knife a year ago after busting his knee while playing for new club Al-Hilal.
Neymar missed the entirety of the campaign as his side stormed to the Saudi Pro League title.
And two weeks ago the Brazil star made his tentative first steps on the pitch as a late sub against Al-Ain.
But last night saw Neymar come off the bench against Esteghal just before the hour mark for a proper reintroduction to football.
Al-Hilal won their Asian Champions League match 3-0 thanks to an Aleksandr Mitrovic hat-trick.
However, Neymar was unable to see out the end of the match.
After being on the pitch for just 28 minutes, Neymar pulled up after stretching his leg to receive a pass.
He looked to be in agony as he fell to the floor in a heap.
And the Brazilian ended up limping off the pitch while clutching his hamstring in another fresh injury blow.

Neymar showed his frustration on the sideline too as he threw his shinpads while looking despondent.
Neymar’s played just seven times for Al-Hilal following a £75million move from Paris Saint-Germain a year ago, scoring once in the process.
He is reportedly being paid £125m a year by the Saudi side — six times his salary at PSG.
But after the game, Neymar took to social media to assure fans he will be back soon by claiming his potential leg injury was hopefully just a cramp.
He said: “I felt like a cramp but very strong! I will do exams and hope it’s nothing more.
“It’s normal for this to happen after one year, the doctors already warned me.
“This is why I need to be careful and have more minutes to play.”
