Ranking The 13 Best Alien Invasion Movies Of All-Time
By Joshua Tyler
| Published

Some of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time revolve around humans in a desperate struggle for survival. Sometimes we’re fighting time-traveling robots or out-of-control plagues. Occasionally, we end up in a post-apocalyptic wasteland fighting ourselves.
What really brings humans together, though, is a battle against an outside force. All the better if those invaders are from the stars. This is the definitive ranking of the best alien invasion movies of all time.
13. Lifeforce

The 1985 movie Lifeforce begins with a naked girl in a box, and it ends with a love scene so explosive it destroys a cathedral and sends a race of alien vampires running for their lives. In between those bookends, Lifeforce is one of the wildest, most unique, most incredible science fiction movies almost no one has seen.
A mission to explore Halley’s Comet results in an alien vampire who looks exactly like one of the most beautiful women in the world wandering around our planet without clothes, luring men in, and sucking the life out of them. At one point, she briefly takes the form of Star Trek star Patrick Stewart, and despite now being a bald academic, she’s so alluring that people still want to make out with her, at their peril.
Movies like Species and Under the Skin owe everything to Lifeforce, the original super hot alien babe sucks the life out of the world movie. Those copies are just copies. They can’t hold a candle to Lifeforce.
12. The Avengers

The 2012 culmination of Marvel’s phase 1, The Avengers, is one of the best superhero movies ever made, but it’s also entirely about an alien invasion. Loki shows up, opens a hole in the sky, and invites an alien army to pour directly into midtown Manhattan like it’s a curbside delivery.
The Chitauri scream between skyscrapers, raining down death as civilians run and buildings collapse. The only way to stop them is if Earth’s mightiest heroes come together as a team and fight them off.
The Avengers is the movie that made Marvel into the modern-day juggernaut it is, and it’s built entirely on the backs of Iron Man dogfighting alien attackers, Captain America commanding street-level resistance, and Hulk unleashing the full force of his anger on giant, alien beasts.
11. Little Shop of Horrors

In Little Shop of Horrors, Rick Moranis stars as Seymour Krelborn, a meek florist whose life changes when he discovers a strange plant he names Audrey II. The plant brings fame and fortune to the failing flower shop until Seymour learns it only grows when fed human blood.
Voiced by Levi Stubbs, Audrey II is an alien planet that has come to earth, but not an invader with a master plan to conquer us. Instead, it’s a manipulative alien parasite with ambition.
As the plant grows, so does its appetite and its influence, pushing Seymour to kill in exchange for success, love, and validation, including a chance with Ellen Greene’s Audrey. The real threat isn’t an alien invasion, it’s alien temptation. Audrey II’s only goal is to grow bigger, spread farther, and use human weakness to do it.
10. Signs

M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs is an alien invasion from the perspective of a normal family, and the big global consequences are only in the background. That allows it to be about more than just aliens. It’s about belief, loss, and the terrifying silence of a God who might not be there.
Mel Gibson’s Graham Hess, once a minister, has abandoned his faith after the tragic death of his wife. The alien invasion is the crucible; it drives his family into corners, tests their survival, and eventually forces him to confront whether life is chaos or design. It doesn’t end with humanity defeating aliens, it ends with one man putting his collar back on, embracing faith not because he got proof, but because he chose to trust again.
9. Predator

In Predator, Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as Dutch, the leader of an elite mercenary team sent into the Central American jungle on what’s supposed to be a routine rescue mission. Alongside him are Carl Weathers as Dillon, Jesse Ventura, Bill Duke, Sonny Landham, and Shane Black. Each is introduced like an action-movie archetype before the movie starts tearing those archetypes apart.
One by one, the team is hunted by an unseen alien warrior using cloaking technology, advanced weapons, and brutal tactics. This isn’t a takeover attempt, like most alien invasions.
The Predator is a lone trophy hunter on Earth purely for sport, seeking worthy opponents to kill and collect. As the squad is wiped out, the film strips away guns, gear, and bravado until it becomes a primal duel between Dutch and a creature that respects only strength, cunning, and survival.
8. Superman 2

Shot back-to-back with Superman: The Movie, the sequel, Superman 2, manages to exceed the groundbreaking original. It does that by pitting Superman against a trio of super-powered alien invaders from his own planet of Krypton, resulting in an eye-popping super-powered slugfest with special effects so amazing for the time that some still hold up today.
The heart of Superman 2 is the moral dilemma: godlike power versus human happiness. It treats Superman as a man making painful, adult choices. Superman has already given up his powers, leaving humanity defenseless. Realizing the cost of his choice, he reclaims his abilities, confronts the invaders, and ultimately restores both order and his secret identity.
It’s a great alien-invasion movie and one of the best superhero movies ever made.
7. They Live

They Live centers on Roddy Piper’s Nada, a transient who arrives in Los Angeles looking for work after a string of bad luck. Nada investigates a nearby church, gets caught up in a wild late-night police raid, and walks away with a mysterious pair of sunglasses that allow him to see the world for what it really is, a hotbed of political propaganda built on complacency and conformity so the aliens can quietly take over and throttle Earth’s resources for their own personal gain.
Nada’s glasses reveal not only the aliens but the true messages hidden in the magazines, billboards, and television shows we all watch. They Live is a biting commentary on the way we’re all manipulated by mass media, and in that sense, it may be one of the most important and eye-opening movies ever made.
As the film reaches its climax, it reveals just how far the conspiracy against the masses goes, and at this point, there’s no turning back. It’s up to Nada to figure out how to wake everybody up, even if it costs him his life.
6. Edge of Tomorrow

What if the only way to save humanity from an alien invasion was to kill yourself repeatedly until you found the right answers? That’s the setup for 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow, starring one of potentially thousands of Tom Cruises as he wakes up repeating the same day until he nails the perfect combination of allies and strategic maneuvers to win the war.
Considered one of the best action films of the 2010s, Edge of Tomorrow moves at a breakneck pace because it can afford to. The first-act exposition keeps resetting, expanding slightly each time until our hero learns to survive the nightmare that’s been forced on him. Each loop inches him closer to completing his mission, but at the cost of dying over and over again.
5. Invasion of the Body Snatchers

One of the best remakes hit screens in 1978: Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Even if you’ve never seen the 1956 original or its other remakes, the basics of the plot are easy to swallow: aliens invade Earth by replacing humans with emotionless duplicates. The catch is that the humans must be asleep for the process to work, a simple twist that turns every yawn into dramatic tension.
Donald Sutherland leads the cast of famous sci-fi stars, including Veronica Cartwright, Jeff Goldblum, and Spock himself, Leonard Nimoy. Our heroes try to uncover the mystery of the pod people, but that soon takes a backseat to trying to survive another night.
Invasion of the Body Snatchers is treated as a very serious story where the stakes are life and death for the entire human race. That’s refreshing compared to modern films winking at the audience every twenty minutes with a tension-deflating joke. The result is one of the most impressive remakes of all time and remains a must-watch for any sci-fi or horror fan today
4. Independence Day

Independence Day is your classic alien invasion story, but with the best CGI that 1996 has to offer. This was years after Jurassic Park, so it’s pretty damn good.
A powerful alien force has appeared over the skies of Earth with the mission to completely annihilate the planet over the Fourth of July weekend. They start by blowing up some of our best buildings in spectacular fashion. A ragtag group of people from Earth works together to stop the destruction of the planet in a last-ditch effort.
Bill Pullman gives one of the best speeches ever as our president, Will Smith gives a performance so fun it turned him into a megastar, and the rest of the cast then totally matches it every second they’re on screen. No alien invasion movie is bigger, crazier, or more fun than this one.
3. War of the Worlds

The world has seen numerous adaptations of HG Wells’ classic alien-invasion novel, both before and after the 1953 release of producer George Pal’s version, yet none have done it better. Especially not that Steven Spielberg version. Sorry, Dakota Fanning.
The movie takes the book that invented alien invasion stories and contemporizes it, setting the War of the Worlds in the 1950s. It also changes the alien ships from Tripod walkers into sleek, floating ships with heat-spitting cobra heads.

The movie’s plan was originally to stick with tripods, but they eventually went with something that was more feasible for the era’s limited practical effects. The change gives this version of the story a uniquely iconic look all its own, and the movie remains as effectively tense and suspenseful now as it ever was.
War of the Worlds holds up in a way few other movies this old do. The cinematography is still beautiful, the aliens are still scary, and the story is still haunting. It’s also a perfect window into 1950s America, complete with the innocence of weekly square dances and the hard-edged determination of soldiers who’d just survived a world war and now found themselves in another one.
2. The Thing

1982’s The Thing is the gold standard of graphic sci-fi horror, an alien-invasion film where every grotesque transformation feels like a practical-effects masterclass in nightmare fuel.
Unlike some of the bigger, more bombastic entries on this list, The Thing takes place in a more intimate setting. With people trapped in a remote outpost, and a creature from another world loose on the inside, mimicking and killing them.

John Carpenter doesn’t settle for simple jump scares; he unleashes a parasite that rips through flesh, bursts out of chests, and reshapes bodies into twisted parodies of life. Dogs split open into writhing masses of tentacles, heads sprout legs and scuttle across the floor, and human bodies melt and fuse in ways that are as mesmerizing as they are revolting.
What makes it unforgettable is the sheer creativity of the terror, shot with brutal clarity. The Antarctic isolation only magnifies the terror, making every reveal hit harder. The Thing is a relentless catalog of the most inventive, character drama, and alien imagery sci-fi has ever dared to put on screen.
1. Arrival

In Arrival, mysterious ships invade Earth’s airspace, land, and then just sort of sit there. It’s an invasion, but one without any violence, and humans are left trying to figure out what’s going on. What’s going on will change everything about the way humanity views the universe, and also maybe the way the movie’s viewers do, too.
Amy Adams plays Louise Banks, an expert linguist who has tragically lost her daughter to an illness. She’s teamed with Ian Donnelly, played by Jeremy Renner, and the two are tasked with figuring out why the ships are there and finding some way to communicate with the beings inside.

Amy Adams is brilliant in the role, and we learn about these aliens and their language right along with her. We go through the pain of losing her daughter and find, along with her, the solace in understanding someone else for the first time. The alien’s invasion becomes a deep exploration of how our communication shapes our thinking.
It’s one of the best movies of the past ten years, a totally unique take on what might happen if visitors from space show up on our doorstep. Though it contains no battle sequences or threats of annihilation, it’s the best alien invasion movie of all time.

One of The Greatest Fantasy Series of the 21st Century Is Officially Streaming For Free
When it comes to fantasy series, George R. R. Martin’s adaptations continue to dominate the genre, having started with Game of Thrones, which ran from April 17, 2011, to May 19, 2019. The tremendous success of the HBO show led to its spin-offs, House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both of which premiered on the network in 2022 and 2026, respectively. However, before any of these came to life, a forgotten fantasy series was all the rage, garnering positive attention throughout its run and still regarded as one of the greatest of this century.
Loosely inspired by British legends from medieval literature, the action-packed series aired for five seasons on BBC One between September 20, 2008, and December 24, 2012. In the US, it was broadcast on NBC from June 21, 2009, for a short while before moving to Syfy for Season 2, running through the final season in 2013. Merlin, also known as The Adventures of Merlin, is the fantasy masterpiece in question, created by Julian Jones, Jake Michie, Johnny Capps, and Julian Murphy for the BBC.
Eighteen years after the adventure series premiered, it is much easier to stream in the US without paying a penny. As reported, all five seasons of Merlin are currently streaming for free on Tubi, which won’t be the first time the fantasy drama was made available for free. Back in 2023, the free streaming service Plex launched a Merlin channel for US viewers, in addition to another channel airing on Amazon Prime Video’s Freevee.
How Well Do You Remember ‘Merlin’?
The acclaimed British show is a reimagining of the Arthurian legends, focusing on Prince Arthur and his manservant, Merlin, as ambitious young men struggling to understand their destinies. After saving Arthur’s life in the first episode, Merlin becomes the prince’s manservant. He soon learns that the reason for his magic is to protect the prince, but Merlin must hide his powers because magic was banned in Camelot by Arthur’s father, King Uther Pendragon, and those caught practicing are executed. Merlin starred Colin Morgan, Bradley James, Katie McGrath, Angel Coulby, Richard Wilson, Anthony Head, and John Hurt.

Kanye West Cancelled By The British Government, For Apologizing?
By TeeJay Small
| Published

Kanye West is probably one of the most controversial figures in all of entertainment, second only to a few elected heads of state. Despite years of antics tarnishing his artistic legacy, the 48-year-old rapper has seen a major resurgence in popularity in recent months. His latest album, Bully, was finally released on streaming services at the end of March. He played a pair of sold-out shows at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium to the tune of over $33 million in gross revenue shortly thereafter.
Just as it seemed like Ye was back on the path to superstardom, however, he was barred entry to the entire nation of the United Kingdom, forcing him to miss his headlining act at Wireless Festival.
According to the trades, Kanye’s travel ban resulted in the entire festival being canceled, with all ticket holders receiving refunds. It seems as though Kanye was only barred from the country due to outrage from advertisers and corporations.
Despite this turn of events, organizers claim that the rapper’s initial booking was cleared well in advance, with little issue. In a statement to the press, the organizers explained “As with every Wireless Festival, multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking YE and no concerns were highlighted at the time.”
Even in a career mired with petty controversies, Kanye’s extracurriculars from 2022 through late 2025 have seen him taking on a dark turn that fans couldn’t have anticipated. During this time, the rapper seemingly embraced a loud-and-proud identity as a rampant anti-semite, which included selling merchandise with swastika icons, pushing antisemitic conspiracy theories online, and taking to Alex Jones’ InfoWars program to espouse support for Adolf Hitler.
Is Kanye West Being Punished For Apologizing?
If Kanye’s antisemitism is truly the basis for him being banned from the U.K., that makes perfect sense. Of course, it raises a number of questions, given that the rapper was free to move around the country during the height of his poor behavior.
West disavowed his previous remarks in January of this year and has taken several steps to minimize the backlash he faced over his actions at that time. Obviously, nobody is required to forgive and forget, but it does seem odd that he was allowed to do anything he wanted in the midst of his Nazi breakdown, only to face backlash after the fact. In a sense, it almost feels like he’s being punished for apologizing.
Once Ye was announced as a headliner for Wireless Festival, numerous sponsors began withdrawing. The event lost contracts with Pepsi, Diageo, Rockstar Energy, and more before the U.K. government stepped in to shut the entire affair down.
Kanye then responded with a statement published in Billboard, which includes the following: “My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music. I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the U.K. in person, to listen. I know words aren’t enough – I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.”
In the previously mentioned statement from Wireless Fest, promoters articulated, “Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognize the real and personal impact these issues have had. As YE said today, he acknowledges that words alone are not enough, and in spite of this still hopes to be given the opportunity to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the U.K.”
I don’t mean to be a conspiracy theorist here, but something feels extremely off. If the event organizers are to be believed, each sponsor agreed to have Ye headline the event without issue, only to make a big show of withdrawing their support once the announcement went public. The U.K. government then follows the same trend, plainly ignoring active instances of bigotry and hatred, and only stepping in when financial interests become significant. The end result in this case is a multi-million dollar loss for London, since the city would have attracted millions of tourists and visitors over the course of the three-day festival.
Virtue Signaling Gone Wild
To me, this scans as nothing more than flippant virtue signaling. Whether you love Kanye West, hate him, or feel ambivalent to his existence entirely, it seems clear that he posed no threat to the people of London. In fact, his sold-out shows at SoFi Stadium seem to indicate that he’s still a major financial draw.
If the free market regulated the controversial artist out of rotation organically, I could understand pulling him from the headlining slot. Instead, it seems government entities are more concerned with playing catch-up than with letting people vote with the power of their dollar. Or rather, the power of their pound, in this case.

Pete Davidson Slammed Over ‘Disgusting’ Girl Dad Joke
Pete Davidson raised eyebrows after revealing that it has been difficult for him to watch adult videos now that he has a daughter.
The funnyman instantly came under fire on social media as he revealed he still manages to do so, saying he “powers through.”
Pete Davidson also recently opened up about his decision to get sober, revealing that a “brutal” conversation with his mom led him to it.
Pete Davidson Says It’s ‘Hard To Watch’ X-Rated Films Since He Became A Dad

During a comedy show at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas on Saturday, Davidson opened up about how fatherhood is impacting some of his NSFW pastimes.
The “Saturday Night Live” alum and his girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt, welcomed their daughter, Scottie, in December last year, and according to Davidson, it has been “hard to watch porn” since then.
“I haven’t done stand-up in 5 months because I just had a baby; it’s a lot of fun,” he said at the show, per Us Weekly. “[I] got a little girl. It’s weird having a little girl.”
The “Bodies Bodies Bodies” actor then said that it’s “hard to watch porn… in front of her,” but followed up with a shocking admission, saying, “I still did. I power through.”
Fans Blast The Comedian Over The ‘Creepy’ Joke

The reaction online was instant and heavy as several internet users slammed him for associating an NSFW activity with fatherhood.
“Why would you associate porn with your daughter? Those are two different things,” an annoyed X user wrote, while another said, “Pete needs to pack up the comedy stuff for now and just focus on his kid, who can’t even stand as yet, work on new material, and stfu, and this is me giving him the tough love treatment.”
Someone else wrote, “This [is] weird as f-ck. Who thinks about their girl daughter while watching porn?”
“Ew, only a weirdo would think to put p0rn and his daughter in the same sentence,” a fourth user penned.
One critic sounded off heavily, saying, “wtf? ew??? I never once liked this guy because he’s unfunny, but this gives me an even better reason to dislike him. This is genuinely disgusting.”
Pete Davidson Said His Daughter Is His ‘Biggest Gift’

The online criticism is particularly biting as it wasn’t too long ago Davidson weighed in on becoming a father while calling his daughter the “biggest gift” ever.
“The best thing I’ve been telling people is [that Scottie is] the biggest gift,” he told the news outlet about his first month being a dad back in January.
“Nothing else matters as much or intensely, like career, activities, hanging out with people [or] what do people think of me, that sort of sh-t,” he continued.
“I still want to do cool stuff, but it’s like, ‘Well, how long do I have to be away?’ Or, ‘Is this worth being away?’” Davidson added about becoming a parent.
The Actor Called His Girlfriend ‘Very Caring,’ Almost ‘To A Fault’

Davidson also praised his girlfriend for how well she embarked on her journey into motherhood, saying at the time that it was “f-cking awesome.”
“The whole time I was very sure and knew that she would be great at being a mom,” Davidson said. “She’s very caring and, almost to a fault, puts everybody else’s needs first. So, it’s really just sweet to see how on top of things she is, and … if [Scottie is] crying, [Elsie] knows exactly what to do.”
He added, “She has, like, little tricks that get her to relax or calm down, and all that stuff is really f-cking cool to watch and see.”
Pete Davidson Opened Up About ‘Brutal’ Reason He Became Sober

Davidson has been away from performing in front of a crowd as he took time to look after and take care of his girlfriend while she was pregnant. He has returned to performing now and seemingly has a number of stops to make just ahead of summer.
The comedian will be performing next at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York, on April 22, before headlining another event in Winnipeg, Canada, on July 17. He will also head to Tacoma, Washington, on August 28.
The changes Davidson is undergoing seem to be widespread as he didn’t only spend over $200,000 to burn off over 200 tattoos, but has also gotten sober following years of struggle with alcohol and substance abuse.
During his recent show, he spoke on how his mom’s brutal honesty helped him turn a new leaf as he revealed she felt his addiction would lead to his death.
“I went to rehab this time,” Davidson said, per Us Weekly. “I was like, ‘I’m gonna I’m gonna actually do it so I could save some of this money I’m making and stop blowing it on rehab.’”
“She was, like, ‘Peter, it’s very hard to be your mom because I wake up every morning with the fear that I’ll turn on the news and see that my son has died,’” Davidson told the crowd. “She told me all this on Zoom — from the house that I bought her on drugs. I was like, ‘Someone’s getting used to things.’ That got me sober.”

Before the clip showed Papoose addressing the rumor that he allegedly cheated on Remy Ma with Claressa Shields, the women were already making headlines. As The Shade Room previously reported, earlier this month, Remy Ma released a new freestyle, titled ‘W.Y.F.L.’
Furthermore, in it, she appeared to take shots at Papoose, insinuating that he never ghostwrote her raps.
This, after Papoose took to Instagram last year, amid news of him and Remy’s divorce, to claim he helped her pen.
After Remy dropped her freestyle, some social media users believed Claressa Shields sublty reacted via her Instagram Story.

Drew Sidora Faces Homelessness After Judge’s Order
Actress and “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Drew Sidora is currently divorcing Ralph Pittman, with whom she shares two children. Recently, the “RHOA” star lost primary physical custody of the children and was ordered to vacate the family home. Now, she’s responding, claiming that she could be homeless if the order is upheld.
Drew Sidora Says She Can’t Afford To Move

TMZ obtained legal documents showing Sidora’s response to the judge’s order requiring her to vacate the home by May 31. The “RHOA” star stated in the court filing that she lacks the “financial resources” needed to acquire a new home.
Additionally, she has not selected a new residence, which means the required May 31 move-out date creates an extra burden even if she had the money. Sidora, who also has a son from a previous relationship, stated that she and the 15-year-old would be “homeless” unless the court reconsidered its decision.
The 40-year-old actress and reality star also claimed that Pittman’s income is triple hers. That’s not all. She stated that her ex initially agreed to joint physical custody but then had a change of heart in court, opting for primary custody instead.
The Initial Court Ruling

TMZ broke the story on April 10 that Sidora had lost primary physical custody of the two children for the school year. However, she and Pittman will retain joint legal custody. The “RHOA” star will have time with the kids on alternating weekends, beginning in August.
Per the report, the judge made this ruling after the children had allegedly missed several school days while in Sidora’s custody. Regarding the home, the estranged couple will split expenses until she moves out, due to the “current financial circumstances of the parties.”
As “RHOA” fans know, Pittman lives in the basement of the home. Until she vacates, he will be allowed to enter the main areas to prepare the children for school.
Sidora’s representative said, “This matter is still being actively litigated, and is in the middle of the final trial. The Second Temporary Order is, in fact, temporary, and does not reflect the final outcome of the case.”
Sidora Has Also Issued A Statement

Before Sidora’s reply to the judge became public, she issued a statement on social media. Per The RHOA Talk on X, she wrote, “Some details regarding my divorce have recently become public, though the process is not yet finalized. During this time, Ralph and I are committed to co-parenting and doing what’s best for our children.”
She went on to say that “while certain things are beyond my control,” she’s committed to being a great mother for her children. In the end, Sidora stated, “There is no ill intent toward anyone, just a continued focus on healing, evolving, and becoming the best version of myself.”
‘RHOA’ Fans Are Reacting To Drew Sidora And Her Legal Response

Sidora and Pittman filed for divorce in February 2023. Since then, “RHOA” fans have watched them navigate both the legal process and their home dynamic. Now, following news that Sidora claims she does not have the necessary funds to relocate by the required date, many of her fans are reacting, with some questioning how he earns three times her income.
One person said on X, “I hope people feel dumb af. Been calling this man broke because she was in ‘Step Up’ for ten minutes 25 years ago, when Ralph has clearly been taking care of her for decades!”
Someone else said, “What does Ralph do for a living, earning 3X more than Drew?” Another “RHOA” fan asked, “So where are the Bravo checks going?” Lastly, a different social media user stated, “Wait, what, no big bravo or musical bucks?”
The Singer/Actress Gave Up Update On Her Divorce In November

Sidora and the cast of “RHOA” attended BravoCon in November 2025. While there, she spoke with The Daily Dish, giving an update on her divorce. She told the outlet, “That’s what I love about BravoCon, because it balances whatever we’re going through in life… love it so much.”
She continued, “Actually, I was supposed to be at my final [divorce] trial right now, but I’m here. The judge allowed me to come, you know, because this was important. So, we are continuing on our journey.”
From there, she gave an update on the kids, saying, “Things are still going. It’s been, like, almost three years. But I can report the kids are great. They’re doing great in school, extracurriculars. And we’re just going through a process, you know? Three years later, and here we are. It’s not final, but hopefully very soon I will be able to announce that [the divorce] is a thing of the past. But not right now, not today.”
“The Real Housewives of Atlanta” airs Sunday nights on Bravo.

Which Malcolm in the Middle Roles Were Recast in the Revival?
Malcolm in the Middle faced several recastings in its four-part revival.
After Hulu picked up a revival series for Malcolm in the Middle, it was confirmed that Erik Per Sullivan would be recast, with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark taking over the role of Dewey.
The rest of the cast — including Frankie Muniz, Bryan Cranston, Jane Kaczmarek, Christopher Masterson and Justin Berfield — reprised their respective characters. In addition to the main cast, Kiana Madeira, Anthony Timpano, Vaughan Murrae and Keeley Karsten were cast in key roles as well.
“25 years since we premiered Malcolm in the Middle. I’m so excited… that I may have peed just a little bit,” Cranston, 70, and Kaczmarek said in a December 2024 announcement post. “What a delight that I get to yell at that kid again! We’re very, very excited about coming back together and seeing what this family has been up to.”
The revival was written by Linwood Boomer, who created the original series. It chronicled Malcolm (Muniz) and his daughter as they are “drawn into the family’s chaos when Hal (Cranston) and Lois (Kaczmarek) demand his presence for their 40th wedding anniversary party,” according to a press release.
It was later revealed that Per Sullivan got a hefty offer to return for the Malcolm in the Middle revival, but he ultimately said no.
Per Sullivan’s onscreen mom, Kaczmarek, was asked about his absence from the upcoming four-part special, telling The Guardian in April 2026 that the retired actor is “studying Dickens and is an incredible student.”
“They offered him buckets of money to come back, and he just said, ‘No, thank you,’” she added.
Kaczmarek previously defended Per Sullivan’s decision to stay out of the spotlight.
“I admire it because so many people think being in show business is the greatest thing in the world. It’s not for everyone,” she said in a 2024 interview about how Per Sullivan is a student at “a very prestigious American university.”

Star Trek’s Funniest Technobabble Was Never Actually Spoken Onscreen
By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

One of the most divisive elements of Star Trek is “technobabble,” the term given to characters’ pseudo-scientific explanations for all of the crazy stuff they are doing or saying. This is a franchise where two characters traveled so fast they became breeding-crazed lizard people; a franchise where everyone is addicted to a freak-friendly VR technology that tries to kill them every week. Heck, this is a franchise where a character is forced into a new body one day and forced into a musical the next day. No matter what happens, though, there will always be technobabble to make it sound like this craziness has a perfectly reasonable scientific explanation.
Amazingly, though, the best Star Trek technobabble of all time was never spoken onscreen. When various writers and producers were working on Voyager, they struggled to come up with a name for Robert Picardo’s cranky medical chief. Eventually, they gave up, and he simply went by the name of the Doctor. Originally, though, they thought they might name him Doctor Zimmerman. As a result, the stage directions for when he materialized out of thin air got an affectionate nickname in scripts: writers wrote how Picardo “zimmers in” and “zimmers out” of scenes.
The Hologram With No Name

The idea of naming Picardo’s holographic medical officer Doctor Zimmerman goes back to the original script for Voyager’s first episode, “Caretaker.” Regarding this character, the script mentioned that “He has no name for now… but we will get to know him in time as Doc Zimmerman.” Incidentally, this last name was meant to honor Herman Zimmerman, an art director and production designer who worked on the franchise throughout the entire Golden Age of Star Trek.
Writers took their cues from this early script, and they began describing Picardo’s character as Doc Zimmerman in every script for Voyager’s first season. They were really committed to this name, and they even released promotional materials to the public that used it. Because of this, the writers came up with a cheeky nickname for the distinctive sound effect of the holographic Doctor popping out of thin air. As an homage to the character’s intended name, stage directions included how the Doctor “zimmers in” and “zimmers out” of scenes.
Holo Physician, Heal Thyself

Early on in Star Trek: Voyager, Robert Picardo’s character considered taking on a name for himself, but he never found one that fit. Behind the scenes, the same thing happened to the writers. You see, by the time Season 2 rolled around, they took a page out of Doctor Who’s book and simply referred to this character as the Doctor in various scripts. However, the writers didn’t give up on the idea of introducing a Doctor Zimmerman into the show. Eventually, both Voyager and Deep Space Nine featured appearances by Lewis Zimmerman, the cranky scientist who created the Emergency Medical Hologram in his own image.
In the Voyager episode “Life Line,” the Doctor got to meet his maker, helping cure Lewis Zimmerman of what would otherwise have been a terminal illness. This gave the two a chance to reconnect, and while they clashed at first, they eventually reconciled. By the end of the episode, Zimmerman told the Doctor to keep writing subspace communiques whenever he got the chance. This made for a heartwarming reconciliation that brought this technobabble saga full circle: now that the EMH had “zimmered in’ to his maker’s life, his photon-loving father never wanted him to “zimmer out,” ever again.
