Sporting Lisbon 4 Man City 1: Ruben Amorim produces tactical masterclass to make huge statement ahead of Man Utd move – The Sun

THEY’LL be rolling out the red carpet for Ruben Amorim in Manchester on Monday now.

And they should be having a whip round at Old Trafford to get Viktor Gyokeres to follow him to Old Trafford as soon as possible.

Together they produced the ultimate fairytale farewell to the Jose Alvalade Stadium for the United-bound boss.

What an extraordinary way to endear himself to his new fans.

His team inflicted a first Champions League defeat in 90 minutes on Pep Guardiola’s mighty Manchester City since May 2022 – 32 matches ago.

Not to mention the heaviest loss in any competition in over four years for the ‘noisy neighbours’.

If this is the kind of entertainment that is heading for the Theatre of Dreams, then fasten your seatbelts.

Gyokeres got a hat-trick – including two penalties – to enhance his reputation as one of the hottest properties in Europe.

He could have had more too and looks exactly what goal-shy United need right now.

They say if you can’t be a good manager then be a lucky one – and Amorim certainly had his share of good fortune.

City bossed the first-half and should have been out of sight – while Erling Haaland also uncharacteristically missed a second-half pen.

But credit to Amorim and his team for hanging in there and then hitting the English champs with some stunning breakaways.

The manager was given a huge ovation by the crowd before kick-off – while a huge banner showed the trophies he has won and simply said “thank you”.

Yet he had expressed his worries before kick-off that the emotion of the last week might affect his players.

And sure enough they began nervously despite their excellent start to the season and fell behind within four minutes.

Keeper Franco Israel rolled a pass to Hidemasa Morita who didn’t look best pleased when he was dispossessed in the blink of an eye by Foden.

The England ace took a couple more touches before thumping a shot past the Sporting keeper – who might be disappointed not to keep it out.

Foden has now scored in eight of his last nine appearances in this competition and seems to be going through the gears after a slow start to the season.

Yet the home side could have levelled within a couple of minutes as Gyokeres nipped in ahead of Rico Lewis and raced through on goal from his own half.

The in-form former Coventry man never looked confident though as Ederson stood up to him and his chipped effort was weak.

Back at the other end, Haaland saw one chance clawed away by Israel and blazed another wide after a delightful pass from Matheus Nunes.

The Norwegian was getting plenty of opportunities and saw a looping header hoofed off the line before Israel flung himself to keep out a volley.

Haaland was being made to wait for his 45th goal in this competition – but you know with him it wont be long.

Stand-in skipper Bernardo Silva latched onto a cheeky back-heel from Foden but steered his shot just past the post.

Sporting have won all ten of their domestic league games this season and were neck-and-neck with City in the table.

City should have been out of sight given their chance – they weren’t though – and were made to pay shortly before the break.

Geovany Quenda found Gyokeres and this time he held off teenage defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey before clipping home his shot.

The Swedish forward – who now has 25 goals this season for club and country – is a huge cult figure in Lisbon and the fans went wild.

Don’t be surprised if a bid comes in from Old Trafford before long.

As the home fans celebrated, Amorim called a quartet of players over to dish out some tactical advice. No sign of him clocking off early.

He can clearly give a half-time team talk too as his side came roaring out for the second-half.

Just 19 seconds after the restart the home side were ahead as Pedro Goncalves threaded a pass to Max Araujo whose shot went straight through Ederson.

The home fans were still celebrating as Josko Gvardiol lost the ball on the left and then upended Francisco Trincao.

It was a clear penalty and Gyokeres did the rest – sending the City keeper the wrong way with an emphatic spot-kick.

City were shell-shocked as they faced up to the prospect of losing three games in a row for the first time in six years.

They got a lifeline midway through the second-half as Silva’s shot hit the arm of Ousmane Diomande.

After a long VAR check a penalty was given and after an even longer wait, Haaland hammered his spot-kick against the bar.

It was clearly Amorim’s night – and not City’s.

And that much was clear as former Sporting star Nunes shoved over Geny Catamo in the box to earn the third pen of the night.

Gyokeres kept his cool and rattled in from the spot again to spark more bedlam and complete his hat-trick.

Welcome to Manchester, Ruben Amorim.

Micah Richards offered chance to be frontman for football club with 'big investors' and pick manager and players

MICAH RICHARDS has revealed a club asked him to become the ‘frontman’ for them – a role that included picking players and appointing a manager.

The former Manchester City and England defender, 36, moved immediately into punditry after retiring from football in 2019.

He has worked for a host of broadcasters including BBC, Sky Sports and CBS Sports – while he is also a Man City ambassador.

Over the course of two decades Richards has also developed an extensive portfolio of properties.

He owns places in Leeds, Harrogate and Manchester – a venture he has previously stated has been “really good for me”.

Now he has opened up about an opportunity that was presented to him to become the face of an unnamed football club.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, he said: “I won’t mention the club but a club got in contact with me to basically be the frontman for their club. Big investors.

“They wanted me to be the guy who would bring everyone together, pick a coach, pick the players that I wanted.

“But what they wanted from it was too much, it was too far from my house. It was never going to work.”

Alan Shearer jokingly responded: “What the f*** did they see in you that they thought you could run a football club?”

To which Richards replied: “They needed someone with charisma. Someone who is knowledgeable about the game. Someone that has got contacts.”

Before Gary Lineker sarcastically added: “This was obviously Manchester City but in the end you just opted for an ambassadorial role.”

Fans ask ‘do they hate him-‘ as Micah Richards gets savaged live on CBS Sports with segment dedicated to his mistakes

Richards has admitted in the past that his work ethic is fuelled by regretfully rejecting a lucrative Man City contract.

Speaking last year, he said: “You had to have so much English players for the quota.

“So Man City offered by £100,000-a-week, five-and-a-half year deal. And I said no.”

He then went on to add: “Why do you think I work for every f***ing broadcaster?”

Sauber signs Bortoleto to 2025 F1 race seat ahead of Audi era

Published

on

Sauber has signed Gabriel Bortoleto to partner Nico Hulkenberg in the 2025 Formula 1 season, the veteran and rookie effectively teaming up in the future Audi squad.

Bortoleto had been courted by the Hinwil-based outfit for some time, with his ties to McLaren as an academy member the main obstacle to a deal.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella however made clear that he wouldn’t stand in his protege’s way if there were a chance for him to clinch a race drive.

Sauber therefore made the move for the 20-year-old Brazilian, having announced earlier on Wednesday that incumbents Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu were set to leave the team

“This is one of the most exciting projects in motorsport, if not in all of sports,” Bortoleto said. “Joining a team that combines the rich motorsport history of Sauber and Audi is a true honour.

“Beyond simply being a member, I aim to grow with this ambitious project and reach the pinnacle of motorsport. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity given to me by the team and for the chance to work alongside an experienced driver like Nico.

“Both programs have a proven track record of nurturing young talent, and I am confident that together, we will write our own success story.”

Bortoleto has impressed in the last two years, winning the FIA F3 championship as a rookie in 2023. The Invicta Racing driver is now leading the Formula 2 standings with only two wins to his name but his top-six consistency proving crucial.

“Gabriel has already demonstrated in the junior categories that he has what it takes to be a winning driver,” Mattia Binotto, COO and CTO of Sauber Motorsport, pointed out. “We are very pleased that he will become a team member of Sauber and Audi.

“Together with Gabriel, we are on a journey towards success, and we will evolve into a unified force to shape a new era for Audi in motorsport. Nico and Gabriel represent the ideal combination of experience and youth, positioning us strongly for the future.”

Chairman of the Sauber Motorsport board Gernot Doellner added: “Led by Mattia, Audi’s Formula 1 project is making great progress in many areas. The signing of the second driver is another milestone.

“We are currently witnessing a generational shift in Formula One, with young drivers immediately making an impact. By signing Gabriel Bortoleto, we have secured one of these top talents. His signing underscores Audi’s long-term strategy and commitment to Formula 1.”

Sauber is currently going through its first point-less Formula 1 season since 2014, with the team’s best result being Zhou’s 11th-place finish in the Bahrain season opener.

Ruben Amorim: Man Utd’s new boss plays down expectations after beating Man City

Ruben Amorim: Man Utd's new boss plays down expectations after beating Man City

Firstly, let’s deal with the reality of where Amorim finds himself now.

He was joking before the game when he said a Sporting victory over City would make United feel another Sir Alex Ferguson was arriving.

There was a huge amount of added interest in the game in Manchester. Those of a United persuasion, fans and club officials alike, were delighted with what they saw. To some, it made a mockery of City’s private insistence that Amorim was not a name on their wish list for when Pep Guardiola eventually leaves.

But nobody, Amorim said, should read too much into events at the Jose Alvalade Stadium.

“I already said previously you cannot transport one reality into another,” he said. “At Manchester United you cannot play exactly like this. You cannot play so defensively and so there we will have to adapt. Clearly it is really difficult to beat this team and to beat Pep Guardiola. And he is not a worse manager than me.

“It will be a completely different world, a different team, we won’t have that much time to train and we will begin from a different starting point. People can make their own judgements but I say to the people of Manchester that this was a one-off.”

Amorim’s observations about his defence are worth further examination.

The most obvious difference being widely analysed is that Amorim plays three central defenders.

Against City, that turned into a back five for long stretches of the game.

Yet that is one of the attractions. Inside United they believe labelling Amorim as someone who plays with three central defenders is too simplistic.

How that shows itself can change, it is argued. This could be through inverted full-backs, more orthodox wing-backs – which is what Geovany Quenda and goalscorer Maximiliano Araujo tried to be when they weren’t being pushed back – or central defenders stepping forward into midfield areas.

In front of them are two sitting midfielders, beyond that two narrow forwards and, up top, the excellent Viktor Gyokeres.

If Amorim sticks to the formation, does he have the personnel to make it effective?

If not, will he have to compromise to the extent Erik ten Hag did, where his eventual team bore no relation to the style he was supposed to be bringing with him from Ajax.

NEW BOXING TV SHOW CELEBRATES BEST UP AND COMING BLACK TALENT

Distortion Entertainment

A filmmaker from London is bridging the gap between cinema and boxing. Award-winning film director and producer Anthony Vander launches SPAR

Vander, an accomplished director and producer whose debut feature Sweetboy premiered at the American Black Film Festival back in 2014, co-produced the pilot episode of Spar, following the short film version in 2020.

Spar stars Nicola Roffe (Fast Girls) alongside Edwin De La Renta (Pretty Red Dress, Bharat), Andre Fyffe (Casualty), and 2023 BAFTA nominee Jordan Pitt. The episode is written by Vander and Kate Napoli, and is produced by actor Mavin Rasheed (Professor T, The Power).

Vander cited director Rapman as one of his inspirations whilst creating Spar.

“He (Rapman) has a fresh approach to storytelling as well as strong representation in all his creations. It’s incredibly inspiring and the blueprint for success. I went out and made Spar because I had to create my own yes, plus no one in the UK has ever done a boxing show like this before.

After its premiere Spar will tour in boxing gyms in the London area.  Vander highlighted the importance of raising awareness for grassroots boxing.

“We want to spotlight boxing gyms up and down the country. A lot of gyms are struggling due to lack of support. It’s more than a sport. Boxing emphasises discipline, self-control and community. If things remain the same, a generation of community could be lost.”

Vander is seeking out investors to push the vision of Spar even further. “With Spar, we have a franchise that is for boxing. I like to think of it as The Bear meets Cobra Kai. We welcome co-productions and investors.”

The Spar pilot will premier in November 2024.

Bottas to leave Sauber after F1 2024; Mercedes reunion expected

Published

on

Valtteri Bottas will leave Sauber after the 2024 Formula 1 season but is understood to already be close to signing back with Mercedes as its reserve driver from next year.

In what has been an awful year for Sauber – still 2024’s only point-less team – Bottas’s place beyond the deal he struck when leaving Mercedes at the end of the 2021 season, when Sauber was branded as Alfa Romeo, was threatened as plans for Audi’s 2026 arrival accelerated.

First, Sauber hired Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg in a deal covering the 2025 season ahead of the Audi rebrand for the following year, with Bottas’s team-mate Zhou Guanyu not in contention to keep the sole remaining racing seat with the team.

Sauber then entered a turbulent period of management change, with previous bosses – former CEO Andrea Seidl and chairman Oliver Hoffmann – axed and ex-Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto hired as chief operating and chief technical officer. Red Bull sporting director Johnathan Wheatley also joined to be Sauber team principal from 2025.

In Brazil last weekend Bottas said doing a new deal with Sauber was still “what I’m pushing for with Mattia”.

But over the Sao Paulo Grand Prix weekend Motorsport.com reported that Formula 2 championship leader Gabriel Bortoleto has agreed a deal to race for the Swiss team for next year after it missed out on signing Williams-bound Carlos Sainz, its long-held target.

“A situation like this is never easy for anyone,” Bottas said. “But after all the good and in-depth discussions we had in the past weeks, we realised that the conditions to grow this project together were not met.

“These past years with the team have been an incredible journey, full of growth, challenges, and unforgettable moments. I’m grateful for the joint experiences as well as the trust and support I’ve felt every step of the way.

“Though it’s time to move on, I’ll always carry a piece of this team with me, and I look forward to seeing what the future holds for us both.”

Mattia Binotto, COO & CTO, Sauber Motorsport AG: “We extend our deepest gratitude to Valtteri for the past three years together. He has been the embodiment of professionalism, using his vast experience to support the team’s growth. Valtteri’s dedication and approach have been invaluable during a pivotal time in our history, and the memories of these years will stay with us for a long time. In considering our driver line-up for the coming seasons, Valtteri was unquestionably a key candidate. With his fighting spirit, he frequently pushed the car beyond its performance limits. However, a decision had to be made. After open and constructive discussions, we mutually concluded that final conditions could not be met so we agreed that it is time to part ways. Valtteri will always have an open door here in Hinwil.”

Sauber’s decision means Bottas’s current F1 racing career will likely be capped at 10 wins from 246 races, come the end of the current campaign in Abu Dhabi next month.

But he could yet see more action with his former team, after saying returning to what he called the “Mercedes family” at Interlagos was “for sure one option and I would consider it”.

Motorsport.com understands that discussions between Mercedes and Bottas have been going on for several weeks, with the squad set to field a team made up of drivers it has supported all the way to F1 – George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli – in 2025.

Although the path back to the full-time racing driver from a reserve role is difficult, F1 has had a surge in super-sub appearances in recent years.

This was turbocharged by the COVID-19 pandemic, with Hulkenberg, in particular, gaining a series of unexpected appearances for what is now Aston Martin after leaving Renault at 2019’s end.

Injury replacements have been required elsewhere and this year Williams axed Logan Sargeant well before the end of the current campaign, although opted to replace him with its junior driver, Franco Colapinto.

But Hulkenberg’s story is one particularly relevant to Bottas, as it was his regular place in the F1 paddock as Aston’s reserve that helped him stay in regular contact with then Haas team principal Guenther Steiner and eventually to a deal to rejoin the grid as a full-time racer with the American squad in 2023.

It is not currently known when any deal for Bottas to return to Mercedes might be announced, but Sauber is predicted to be confirming the deal for Bortoleto – currently a McLaren junior – this week.
