World Triathlon Series 2024 - Weihai: How to watch on BBC, schedule & GB squad

Olympic medallists Beth Potter and Alex Yee lead the British contingent for the World Triathlon Championship Series event in Weihai, and you can watch it live on the BBC.

The leg in China on 27 September is the last chance for the athletes to accrue points heading into the finals in Andalucia, Spain in October.

GB have a strong contingent, with Kate Waugh, Georgia Taylor-Brown and Sophie Coldwell joining Paris 2024 bronze medallist Potter in the women’s race. Olympic champion Yee is one of five Britons competing in the men’s race.

Yee sits in third in the men’s standings, with defending champion Potter third in the women’s.

Australian Matthew Hauser sits top of the men’s standings going into Weihai, while France’s Paris gold medallist Cassandre Beaugrand leads the women’s with compatriot Emma Lombardi in second. Four-time world champion Bermudian Flora Duffy is fifth.

After China the series will move to Spain for the finals, where additional points – 1,250 for the men’s and women’s winners compared to 1,000 in the other legs of the series – will be available. The finals will also be available to watch live on the BBC.

Erling Haaland a coward for throwing ball at Gabriel – Ian Wright

Erling Haaland a coward for throwing ball at Gabriel - Ian Wright

Erling Haaland is a “coward” for throwing the ball at the back of Gabriel’s head after Manchester City’s late equaliser against Arsenal, says former Gunners striker Ian Wright.

City striker Haaland collected the ball from the net after John Stones’ goal and threw it at the back of the Arsenal defender, who was looking the other way and had put his shirt over his head in frustration.

The Video Assistant Referee reviewed the incident but chose not to intervene because it was not deemed a red card offence.

The Football Association says it will not take any further action over any of the incidents during the game, including a heated exchange between the players at the final whistle.

“The one thing that boiled me up properly was Haaland’s coward’s move,” Wright said in a video on Instagram.

“Throwing the ball at Gabi’s head when he’s not looking. When Gabi’s back’s turned to him. Real coward’s move. Gabi would look him in the eye, you know.

“That’s what bothered me more than anything else. I thought you [Haaland] were bigger than that.”

Rangers interim chairman John Gilligan urges Dave King to cease criticism

Rangers interim chairman John Gilligan urges Dave King to cease criticism

Rangers won last season’s Scottish League Cup and were runners-up to Celtic in the other two domestic competitions. They continued their defence of this season’s League Cup into the semi-finals with victory over Dundee on Saturday and will face Motherwell at Hampden next month.

However, Philippe Clement’s side trail Celtic and Aberdeen by five points in the Premiership and will compete in the Europa League this season, starting away to Malmo on Thursday, after being knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Dynamo Kyiv.

King has said £50m is needed to get Rangers back in a competitive position with three-in-a-row champions Celtic.

“Dave is talking about fresh investment but he doesn’t want to invest,” said Gilligan. “I’m not sure where he thinks investment is going to come from.”

The interim chairman said King’s assessment of the state of the club is not accurate and has called on King to deliver a plan if he thinks he knows a better way to proceed.

“I think he’s got it wrong,” said the interim chairman. “I think it’s unfair. What exactly is he saying is not good? What’s he saying is going wrong?

“Give us a plan and tell me. If Dave has some terrific plan to tell me where we’re all going wrong, we read that plan and consider it.

“I haven’t spoken to Dave. Dave gave me one of the happiest days of my life when he asked me to join him [on the board] 10 years ago and I’ll never forget it. Since then we’ve socialised when he’s been over and played golf but I haven’t spoken to him, no.”

Everton takeover: Friedkin Group in advanced talks for deal

Everton takeover: Friedkin Group in advanced talks for deal

The Friedkin Group is already a lender to the club after injecting £200m, though this could be converted to equity as part of any deal.

BBC Sport was told a major stumbling block in their initial purchase attempt was the legal action 777 Partners faced in the US, but this version of events has been disputed by the involved parties who said the filing was made public well in advance of their takeover bid.

In June, American businessman Friedkin, who has a reported net worth of £5.7bn, wanted Roma and Premier League club Everton to sit at the top of a multi-club model.

Last week, the Italian club sacked boss Daniele de Rossi just four games into the new season and on Sunday supporters displayed their anger at the decision to dismiss the club legend, while chief executive Lina Souloukou stepped down from her role.

Sean Dyche’s Everton side are joint-bottom of the Premier League and yet to win this season, collecting just one point from their opening five games.

Alex Callender named Welsh Rugby Writers’ Player of the Year

Alex Callender named Welsh Rugby Writers' Player of the Year

Alex Callender has been voted the Welsh Rugby Writers’ Association women’s Player of the Year.

The 24-year-old edged out Wales captain Hannah Jones, who won back-to-back English Premiership titles with Gloucester-Hartpury, and three-time Olympian Jasmine Joyce.

Callender was without a club for the 2023-2024 season after the collapse of Worcester Warriors Women, but has signed for Harlequins Women for this term.

She captained Brython Thunder in the 2024 Celtic Challenge, scoring three tries.

Callender was also a standout player for Wales in what was otherwise a disappointing Women’s Six Nations, with Wales finishing bottom of the table.

“To follow in the footsteps of all the amazing rugby players who have won it before me is very surreal,” said Callender.

“I looked at Alisha Butchers and Sisilia Tuipulotu winning this in the last couple of years and I never thought it would happen to me. It’s really exciting and I’m very honoured.”

The New Saints to play Europa Conference home games in Shrewsbury

The New Saints to play Europa Conference home games in Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury’s Croud Meadow Stadium is 22 miles from Saints original village base of Llansantfraid and under 20 miles from Oswestry, where they have played home matches over the English border since the redevelopment of Park Hall in 2007.

In 2003 The New Saints played a Uefa Cup qualifying game against Manchester City at what was then named the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, but Harris had already ruled out the possibility of staging this season’s European ties at Cardiff City Stadium.

“Places like Cardiff are three hours away from where we are, so our fans and stakeholders can’t really get there,” Harris had said after beating FK Panevezys in the play-offs to qualify for the group stages.

“It’s got to be somewhere more local.

“Wrexham and Shrewsbury would be most ideal for us, but I’m not sure the Racecourse is available, so it’s our priority to get the games in a stadium that can cater for the games, but also giving the people around us a chance to go and watch.”

Their first match at Croud Meadow will be on Thursday, 24 October (20:00 BST), when they host Astana of Kazakhstan.

Djurgarden, from Sweden, will travel to Shrewsbury on Thursday, 28 November (17:45 GMT) before the visit of Greek team Panathinaikos on Thursday, 12 December (20:00 GMT).

Liam Dooley, Shrewsbury Town chief executive, said: “We are delighted to welcome The New Saints to the Croud Meadow. A lot of work has been completed behind the scenes on this by both clubs working together and we are really happy to get this over the line.

“It gives us the chance to showcase our stadium around Europe, as well as providing additional revenue for the club, and supporting TNS on their journey.”
