The media business established by Gary Neville, The Overlap, has been snapped up by Global in a transaction that sees the broadcasting powerhouse secure a controlling stake.

Founded in 2021 and best-known for its video series Stick to Football, The Overlap will now be integrated into Global’s stable as part of an ambition to develop a “network of video-led media brands in football and other sports”.

The transaction marks the departure of former majority stakeholder Miroma Group from the operation.

The Overlap’s headline programme Stick to Football brings together Neville, Jamie Carragher, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jill Scott, whilst offshoot series covering rugby union and cricket have emerged in recent times.

Financial statements for the period ending 30 June 2024 revealed net assets of £406,000, with several alterations to significant ownership of The Overlap Limited recorded in December, as reported by City AM.

“We see huge growth potential for The Overlap and have spent the last few months in a strategic investment process and are delighted to have found the perfect partner in Global to power us forward and create ‘The Overlap Network’ with the aim of becoming a world-leading football and sports media platform,” Neville said.

The ex-Manchester United defender, who alongside David Beckham recently divested a portion of his interest in Salford City FC, will assume the role of co-chair within the Global structure, whilst former Sky Sports producer Scott Melvin takes up the position of lead executive director.

Global Group chief executive Simon Pitts will serve as Neville’s co-chair. The Overlap has capitalised on the growing appetite for fresh, non-traditional sports content, sharing the space with Gary Lineker’s Goalhanger firm.

Neville’s venture boasts over 38m monthly views on YouTube, while Lineker’s Goalhanger has inked a deal with Netflix to co-produce his podcast, The Rest Is Football, during the 2026 Fifa World Cup. “Global will use its platforms, relationships and unrivalled marketing power to support the growth of The Overlap,” read a statement, “from hosting and distribution to data-driven insights and industry-leading ad sales, through Global’s digital advertising exchange (DAX).”
