Wales’ sporting hero Terry Yorath has sadly passed away aged 75

Match of the Day presenter Gabby Logan raised concerns among fans after being rushed off Wednesday’s show on short notice. It has since come to light the death of her father, former Wales international and manager Terry Yorath, was the reason for her abrupt exit.

A statement released by Yorath’s children via the BBC read: “To most he was a revered footballing hero, but to us he was Dad; a quiet, kind and gentle man. Our hearts are broken but we take comfort knowing that he will be reunited with our brother, Daniel.”

Yorath’s sporting legacy continues through Gabby, who represented Wales and Great Britain in rhythmic gymnastics, as well as her extended family. And those roots run very deep, with Terry’s influence on their athletic achievements still ongoing today.

Long before Logan had ambitions of becoming a broadcasting icon for the BBC, Yorath was already well established as a legend in his own right. Terry was a part of the Leeds team that finished as FA Cup runners-up to Sunderland barely a week after Gabby was born but made up for that miss by winning the First Division title the following season.

As part of an iconic Leeds outfit, he also finished as runner-up to Bayern Munich in the 1975 European Cup final, becoming the first Welshman to appear in the continental decider. He later went on to star for Tottenham and Coventry but never got his hands on another major title.

In addition to his 59 England caps, the midfielder transitioned into management immediately after ending his playing career at Swansea. He impressed enough to land the Wales national team job, where he presided for five years before coaching a number of clubs, including hometown outfit Cardiff City.

Yorath came close to clinching qualification for the 1994 World Cup but missed out in agonising fashion. Arguably his greatest feat as a manager, however, came at Swansea when he steered the south Wales outfit to promotion from the Fourth Division in 1988.

Rugby international husband

There’s little wonder why Logan’s progeny have taken up their own athletic careers after she married ex-Scotland rugby star Kenny in 2001. The ex-winger exploded onto the stage with Glasgow Warriors but reached the peak of his powers with Wasps at a time when they were a force to be reckoned with on the European stage.

After winning the Scottish Premiership with Stirling County in 1995, it wasn’t long before he moved down to London. And it was there Wasps won two Premiership titles, in 1997 and 2003, with Logan doing considerable damage out wide.

He won 70 caps for his country and scored 13 tries in the process, making his final Test appearance against Australia at the 2003 Rugby World Cup. He and his spouse later went on to appear on the 2007 season of Strictly Come Dancing together, where Gabby was among the first to be voted off before Kenny placed an impressive fifth.

Giant son

And the rugby genes won’t quite there, it seems, given Reuben Logan is well on his way to becoming a fully fledged rugby star in his own right. One can see Scotland’s appeal, too, given the towering back-rower is an intimidating presence at 6’5″.

At just 20 years old, the Sale Sharks prospect has already been capped by Scotland’s under-20 team after previously being named among England’s under-20s. And it seems his allegiances now firmly lie with his dad’s side of the family.

Even more impressively, Reuben also has a twin sister, Lois, who’s making waves in the horse-riding world. She made a splash in show-jumping but has since transitioned to racing after a ride at Glorious Goodwood last year.
