Grantchester returned to ITV for its 10th season on Wednesday, but viewers were more focused on the relationship between two characters
Grantchester made its return to ITV for its penultimate tenth series on Wednesday, but viewers found themselves more captivated by the romantic storyline between two beloved characters than the central murder mystery.
Within moments of the episode starting, fans flocked to X to express their hopes that cherished characters Leonard Finch (Al Weaver) and Daniel Marlowe (Oliver Dimsdale) would find happiness together.
Former curate Leonard departed the church when his romance with Daniel became public knowledge and subsequently established a halfway house for vulnerable individuals. However, their journey has been far from smooth, with Leonard battling personal demons, including grief and substance abuse.
“I’d really appreciate it if #Grantchester could at least give Leonard and Daniel a happy relationship this series,” one viewer posted.
“If Daniel and Leonard aren’t happy in this season of #Grantchester I’m switching off!” another declared, reports the Express.

A third fan pleaded: “Please let Leonard and Daniel be happy for once this series, please.”
Meanwhile, the episode’s central plot, which centred around a case of mistaken identity culminating in murder, left numerous viewers baffled.
“That plot was full of holes,” one viewer complained. “Absolutely laughing at this episode so far,” another commented.
Additionally, DI Geordie Keating’s investigative methods drew criticism from one observant fan who questioned: “Really, Geordie? Picking up the bullet cases with your fingers?”
However, some fans were loving the new series, with one writing, “A nice easy watch on a cold winter evening.” Another agreed, “Great to have Grantchester back.”
The programme will conclude with its 11th series, which has already been completed, and before the tenth series commenced, star Robson Green revealed that this marks the longest period he has ever dedicated to a single production.
In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk and other publications, the 60-year-old confessed: “I’ve done a lot of drama series, hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of hours of prime time drama, but I have never done a 10-series of anything.
“One of the reasons that brings me back is, I know I’m going to have a good time. There is not one (bit of) negative energy in this drama or in this series. I know I’m going to have joy working with Kasey (Ainsworth). I’m going to have a joy working with Rishi,” he enthused.
“I go, ‘Great, I’m putting my one suit on again and putting on and carrying the hat and going on a journey in the shadow of death, in the shadow of World War Two,” he added.
“In the shadow of the death penalty, in the shadow of abortion which is illegal (in the period the show is set). Homosexuality is illegal. Job opportunities for women are limited. And these relationships in this likeable community and gallery of characters are all going to be tested through crime, and I know I’m going to have a good time doing it.
“And when you’re my age, it’s just, it’s just a joy to be part of something that is just so incredibly enjoyable,” he concluded.
Grantchester is available to watch on ITVX.
