Historic Moment for GAA Rounders as Congress Votes Overwhelmingly for Ard Chomhairle Seat
GAA Rounders has officially secured its place at the top table of the association after an overwhelming vote at GAA Congress 2026.
Motion 2 — proposing the addition of a GAA Rounders representative to Ard Chomhairle — passed with a remarkable 98.3% in favour, with just 1.7% voting against. The motion was submitted by Old Leighlin (Carlow) and represents one of the most significant governance moments in the modern history of the sport.
For the first time, GAA Rounders will have a direct voice in the room where the biggest decisions are made.
A long-awaited breakthrough
For decades, Rounders has operated under the GAA umbrella without direct representation at Central Council level. While the sport has grown steadily in participation and profile — particularly in recent years — its absence from Ard Chomhairle has often been viewed as a structural gap.
That gap is now closed.
The scale of the vote leaves little ambiguity. A near-unanimous endorsement from delegates signals strong support across the association for recognising Rounders as a fully embedded part of the GAA’s governance framework.
More than symbolic
While the motion itself is short in wording, its implications are substantial.
Having a Rounders representative on Ard Chomhairle ensures the sport will now have a direct voice in discussions around:
- Governance and constitutional matters
- Development funding and resources
- Facilities and long-term planning
- The strategic direction of the wider association
It also strengthens Rounders’ standing within the GAA ecosystem, particularly at a time when conversations around multi-code inclusion and representation continue to evolve.
A defining Congress moment
Congress 2026 features numerous debates across governance, championships and structural reform, but Motion 2 will stand out as a defining legacy decision.
Unlike many technical rule changes that shape competitions or administration, this vote directly alters the governance landscape of the association. It formally acknowledges Rounders’ place not just within the GAA family, but within its core decision-making structure.
A clear mandate
The strength of the vote matters.
Passing with 98.3% support, the motion moves beyond simple approval into clear mandate territory. It reflects not just acceptance but strong backing from the wider GAA membership.
For those involved in Rounders at club, county and national level, the result is both symbolic and practical — a recognition of the work done to grow the sport and a platform for further development in the years ahead.
What happens next
With the motion now passed, attention will turn to how the Rounders representative is selected and integrated into Ard Chomhairle structures — a process that will likely require formal constitutional and governance steps.
However, the direction is now clear.
For the first time in its history, GAA Rounders will have a seat at the main table of the GAA.

Keyshawn Davis sees one outcome in Shakur Stevenson vs Ryan Garcia: “He whoops him”
Former world champion Keyshawn Davis believes that Ryan Garcia will face Shakur Stevenson next, with one man likely to get “his ass whooped.”
Garcia claimed the WBC welterweight title last Saturday, scoring a first-round knockdown before unanimously outpointing and dethroning Mario Barrios in Las Vegas.
After becoming a world champion, the 27-year-old then doubled down on his desire to face Stevenson, calling out the pound-for-pound star in his post-fight interview.
With Stevenson coming off a career-best victory over Teofimo Lopez, though, many would make the slick southpaw a sizable favourite against Garcia.
The 28-year-old became a four-division world champion last month, dropping just one round as he outpointed and dethroned Lopez in New York.
Prior to securing his WBO super-lightweight strap, the unbeaten technician had always claimed that 140lbs would be his limit, but is now open to colliding with Garcia at a catchweight of 144lbs.
In response to Stevenson’s proposed weight stipulation, Garcia has offered a verbal agreement, though it remains to be seen whether this will be upheld at the negotiating table.
Either way, super-lightweight contender Davis, who is a longtime friend of Stevenson, has opined that Garcia would not stand a chance against the defensive magician.
Speaking with Fight Hub TV, Davis insisted that, even while contending with a size disadvantage, Stevenson would enter their potential clash as an almighty favourite.
“I think he fights Shakur; I think he gets his ass whooped.”
With Garcia’s last two outings taking place at 147lbs, it will be interesting to see if he stays true to his word and agrees to concede 3lbs for the potential fight.

Rico Verhoeven to be trained by former Tyson Fury coach for Usyk title fight
Kickboxing star Rico Verhoeven is a “serious fighter,” according to Tyson Fury’s former trainer, who believes his charge will exceed expectations against Oleksandr Usyk.
The bona fide heavyweight king has been permitted to defend his WBC title against Verhoeven, headlining a Ring Magazine show at Egypt’s Pyramids of Giza on May 23.
Ordinarily, a sanctioning body would not allow such a contest to take place for its belt, with world title challengers typically needing to be ranked in the top 15 of a recognised organisation.
The WBC, however, has seemingly invoked article 3.3 (c) of its Rules and Regulations, stating that such title defences can take place under ‘special circumstances’.
Indeed, this does appear to be a ‘special’ event – based on its location alone – yet many boxing fans will nonetheless be unfamiliar with Verhoeven’s credentials.
This is because the 36-year-old has had just one outing in a professional boxing ring, resulting in a second-round stoppage victory over Janos Finfera who, back when they fought in 2014, had a record of 0-5.
Nevertheless, the Dutchman’s trainer, Peter Fury, who trained his nephew Tyson for his famous win over Wladimir Klitschko back in 2015, has told Boxing King Media that, beyond his decorated kickboxing career, Verhoeven is well-versed in the art of pugilism.
“People need to get behind this fight, because I can tell you now: I’m certainly not going to turn up on the world stage [and] embarrass myself, and embarrass my fighter.
“My fighter’s a serious fighter, so this will be a great fight. Trust me. Usyk’s an incredible champion. I respect him as a fighter, a boxer, and I respect him as a human being.
“And I respect Rico. So I’m going to do my job, and I’m going to enjoy it, and whatever the outcome is, it is.”
While Usyk will definitely defend his WBC title against Verhoeven, it remains to be seen whether his IBF and WBA straps will also be on the line.
Either way, the likes of WBC ‘interim’ champion Agit Kabayel and No.1 contender Lawrence Okolie are likely irked to have not been given their shot at the Ukrainian’s belt.

Struggling Auburn, Ole Miss vie to make run down stretch
Feb 21, 2026; Auburn, Alabama, USA; Auburn Tigers guard Keyshawn Hall (7) shoots a free throw during the second half against the Kentucky Wildcats at Neville Arena. Mandatory Credit: John Reed-Imagn Images This season has gone awry for Ole Miss and Auburn with both teams sitting in the bottom half of the Southeastern Conference and, barring a Cinderella-like SEC tournament run, missing out on March Madness.
Both teams will look to get over rough losses and try to gain momentum to end the season when the Tigers host the Rebels on Saturday night.
Auburn (15-13, 6-9 SEC) had an up-and-down start to conference play but looked to be going in the right direction with back-to-back wins over then-No. 16 Florida and Texas at the end of January.
Since then, the Tigers have lost six of seven, and if they don’t win out, they will finish with a losing record in conference play for just the second time in the past nine seasons.
The Tigers stumbled in a 91-79 loss at Oklahoma on Tuesday, when they allowed the Sooners to shoot 13 of 19 from 3-point range (68.4%).
“We were entitled tonight,” coach Steven Pearl said after the defeat. “We were selfish tonight on the defensive end. … So I got to change up how I’m coaching these guys. I got to ratchet up my intensity a little bit more, and maybe they’ll start to play like I act.
“We can’t keep having low basketball IQ mistakes that lead to just wide-open shots.”
Keyshawn Hall, who had 26 points against Oklahoma, leads the frontcourt attack for the Tigers with 20.8 points per game while Tahaad Pettiford heads the backcourt with 14.4 points and 3.6 assists per contest. Ole Miss (11-17, 3-12) sits at the bottom of the SEC and has already lost to Auburn once this season, a 78-66 decision on Jan. 20. That game started the Rebels’ current 10-game losing streak, Ole Miss’ longest skid since 2002-03.
It was a heartbreaker the last time out for Chris Beard’s squad, which lost in double overtime to LSU 106-99 on Wednesday despite Ilias Kamardine and Malik Dia combining for 46 points.
“We had a couple of dumb fouls at the end of the game, and again, we had the ball in our hands with two chances tonight, and we didn’t get it done,” Beard said.
Beard will need Kamardine (11.3 ppg) and Dia (14.1 ppg and 6.1 rebounds per game) to be on the mark again if Ole Miss hopes to break its 10-game head-to-head losing streak against Auburn. The Rebels last beating the Tigers on Feb. 6, 2021, prevailing 86-84 in overtime. –Field Level Media

Lionel Messi tackled by fan during Inter Miami match in Puerto Rico
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Soccer legend Lionel Messi was tackled to the ground during a friendly in Puerto Rico on Thursday.
It happened around the 88th minute of an exhibition tour match. Several fans jumped onto the pitch at Juan Ramón Loubriel stadium. Messi’s team, Inter Miami, was playing Ecuador’s Independiente del Valle in Bayamón when a fan ran to the center circle and grabbed Messi by the waist before both were pulled down by a security guard.
Messi appeared to be unharmed. The Argentine star immediately got up and walked to another part of the pitch.

Messi’s security guard situation has been a subject of fan fascination for years, especially after he came to the U.S. to join Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami.
His main bodyguard, Yassine Chueko, has gone viral in previous years for hovering alertly over Messi while the star was playing soccer. However, in 2025, Inter Miami changed Chueko’s role to prevent him from being on the field to guard Messi from pitch invaders.
Chueko expressed concern and frustration over the decision, warning it could result in Messi getting tackled.

“They don’t allow me to be on the field anymore,” the bodyguard said in an interview with social media channel House of Highlights.
“I was in Europe for seven years, working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch. I came to the USA, and in just 20 months, 16 people have already done so. There’s a huge problem here. I’m not the problem. Let me help Messi.”
An Inter Miami team spokesperson previously told ESPN it was a club decision, not MLS’, to not have Cheuko on the sidelines. However, Cheuko remains an employee of the club and part of the security detail, and escorts Messi daily.
Now, at the start of 2026, a pitch invader has successfully reached Messi on the field and brought the 38-year-old superstar to the ground, in Cheuko’s absence.
Thursday’s match was originally scheduled for Feb. 13, but was postponed because Messi felt discomfort in his leg during the previous exhibition match against Barcelona SC of Ecuador.
