Flights diverted from Newcaste Airport due to ice on runway
Temperatures reached as low as -2°C at the airport on Thursday evening (January 8), prompting four flights to be re-directed to Edinburgh and Glasgow.
Flights are operating from the airport as normal today (Friday, January 9).
The first flight, which was set to land at the airport at 8.55pm was TUI flight BY1425 from Gran Canaria, but it was diverted to Glasgow.
British Airways’ flight BA1340 from Heathrow was then due to land at 9.45pm but was also diverted to Glasgow.
At 9.55pm, Ryanair flight FR20 from Dublin was due to land but was diverted to Edinburgh.
Also diverted to Edinburgh was Ryanair flight FR4079 from Alicante, which was due to land at 10.25pm.
A Newcastle Airport spokesperson said: “Due to wintry weather conditions, essential de-icing work on the runway needed to be undertaken several times last night.
“As a result, four flights were diverted. We apologise to passengers for any inconvenience caused.
“The safety of passengers and our staff is our top priority and operations returned to normal shortly afterwards.”
A spokesperson for British Airways confirmed their Heathrow flight took off again from Glasgow and all passengers made it to Newcastle safely.
