Armed police descend on pub after gun reports

Armed police were sent to the pub at the centre of a community on the outskirts of Newport

Armed police were sent to a Welsh pub on New Year’s Day after reports that a man who was allegedly in possession of an imitation firearm was making threats.

Officers from Gwent Police, including firearms officers, were sent to the Nightingale pub in Bettws, near Newport on Thursday, January 1. A man has since appeared in court in connection with the alleged incident.

Liam Brabham, 30, was arrested and later charged with possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

He appeared at Newport Magistrates’ Court on January 3, where he was remanded into custody until his next hearing at Cardiff Crown Court on January 20.

A spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We received a call reporting threats of violence and a man allegedly in possession of an imitation firearm in the Nightingale, Bettws at around 9.10pm on Thursday, January 1. Officers attended, alongside specially trained firearms officers as a precaution, and the man had left the area.

“A 30-year-old man from Newport later handed himself in and was arrested on suspicion of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He was later charged and remanded into custody.”
