John Fury’s honest verdict on Tyson Fury announcing comeback at 37: “I’ll tell him”
John Fury plans to fly out to Thailand in the coming weeks, hoping to assess whether his son, Tyson, is capable of mounting another world title charge.
‘The Gypsy King’ announced his return to boxing earlier this month, taking to social media to confirm that, following a near year-long retirement, he still has “nothing better to do than punch men in the face.”
This happens to be the same he weighed for his last outing, a unanimous decision defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024, yet many have highlighted his slightly larger physique as a point of concern.
Or, at least, there is a consensus view that Fury, now 37 years old, still has a way to go before whipping himself back into fighting shape.
One member of the team who suspects this to be the case is his father, John, who seemingly has mixed feelings about his son’s decision to return.
In fact, John had hoped for the former world champion to retire following his sixth-round stoppage victory over Dillian Whyte in 2022.
But then, with a trilogy against Derek Chisora and a close battle with former UFC champion Francis Ngannou arriving in 2022 and 2023, respectively, Fury would ultimately go on to suffer back-to-back points defeats to Usyk in 2024.
Speaking to IFL TV yesterday, John gave an honest assessment of the situation, insisting that he will tell Tyson straight whether he has anything left in the tank.
“Really, I didn’t want Tyson to box after Dillian Whyte, or Chisora. And I thought, after the Ngannou fight, that was it.
“But he’s tried to stay retired – he’s not a happy man – and, you know, he says he’s got more to give. Let’s see.
“I’m going to fly over there in a few weeks’ time, put some time in with him, and I want to see exactly what he has got.
“And, if he has got plenty [left], we’ll be back and we’ll win a title again. But if he hasn’t, he hasn’t – and I’ll tell him.”
John adds that the plan is for Tyson to put some more muscle on his frame, giving him the ‘right kind of vessel’ to match his ‘Spartan’ approach.
