ITV’s Josie Gibson revealed she has been diagnosed with lipoedema amid weight loss battle
- According to the NHS, lipoedema is a chronic condition that leads to the abnormal build-up of fat on your body, especially around legs, hips, bottom and sometimes your arms. This condition is more prevalent in women than in men.
- While the condition is said to impact both sides of your body equally, every patient will experience lipoedema differently. For some people it can lead to pain, tenderness or heaviness in affected limbs, along with bruising easily.
- Others may also have an impact on their daily life, physical condition or mental health. Lipoedema currently doesn’t have a cure.
- The NHS is also still not clear on what the exact cause of the condition is as you can still develop it if you hold a healthy weight. It suggests that it could be caused by changes in hormones during pregnancy, puberty, menopause or while on the contraceptive pill.
- While there is no current cure for lipoedema, the NHS highlights some treatments to help lessen the pain. This includes wearing compression socks and bandages, watching your weight through diet and exercise, looking after your skin and seeking counselling or cognitive behavioural therapy if your mental health is impacted.
