Call the Midwife’s Helen George has been in several long-term relationships, and has previously opened up about her divorce, which she called an ‘awful’ experience

Helen George has experienced her share of romantic highs and lows – from the breakdown of a marriage to a relationship with a divorced father of two.

The Birmingham-born actress has become one of Britain’s most cherished stars through her portrayal in Call the Midwife. The much-loved BBC period drama, which launched in 2012, chronicles the lives of a group of midwives, brought to life by an ensemble of gifted performers, working in London’s East End throughout the late 1950s and 1960s.

For 14 years, Helen has portrayed Trixie Franklin and featured in numerous unforgettable storylines within the series. Yet, beyond the cameras, the mother-of-two’s personal life has been far from straightforward, reports the Mirror.

Here, we delve into her rollercoaster romantic journey….

Helen’s marriage breakdown with actor

Helen was formerly wed to actor Oliver Boot. The couple first crossed paths whilst working on the BBC’s Hotel Babylon in 2008, though their romance didn’t begin until several years afterwards.

They married in 2011, only to confirm their separation in 2015. The split came mere weeks ahead of Helen’s appearance on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in 2015. Speaking in 2023, Helen reflected on the divorce proceedings, describing them as “awful”.

She revealed to The Times: “Going through a divorce is awful. I’d been asked to do Strictly and, strange as it sounds, I thought it would be like a sort of therapy after my divorce. I’d spoken to quite a few people who said how it really helped them through difficult times.”

She continued: “You are focused on this one thing, it’s an emotional journey. I was so naive that I thought no one would be interested in me, so that was a shock. I soon realised I didn’t want all that celebrity stuff.”

Helen’s relationship with Call the Midwife star

Not long after parting ways with Oliver, Helen began seeing Jack Ashton, her Call The Midwife co-star, after meeting him on set in 2015 when he joined as Reverend Tom Hereward.

The pair’s romance blossomed whilst shooting the 2016 Christmas Special in South Africa. Their relationship flourished, with Helen and Jack becoming parents to Wren in 2017, followed by their second daughter, Lark, in 2021.

Speaking about their connection, Helen revealed to Stella Magazine: “It was a slow process. All of us on the show are mates. We all hang out together and Jack always really makes me laugh.”

Praising Jack, she added: “He’s so unbelievably kind and down to earth, and he’s such a great dad.”

Yet, their seven-year relationship came to an unforeseen conclusion in July. Helen told The Mirror: “Some months ago, we separated. Our two beautiful girls remain the focus and I respectfully ask for privacy for this next chapter.”

Helen’s current relationship with father-of-two

Helen is now in a relationship with Dan Innes. It’s understood that Helen met Dan through the exclusive dating app Raya.

Helen made her new relationship public on Valentine’s Day last year, spending the evening with Dan at The Watermans Arms, a riverside eatery in Barnes.

Dan’s LinkedIn profile reveals he brings more than 25 years of expertise in the property sector and studied at Newcastle University. He currently serves as managing director and founder of property consultancy Innesco, as stated on his Instagram account.

Similar to Helen, Dan is also a divorced father of two. His first marriage to Kate Wette took place in 2008 before they separated in 2016.

They have two children together, aged 14 and 12. Speaking to The Mail’s You magazine in December, Helen discussed her relationship, saying: “It’s a very happy relationship. It’s lovely to be with someone outside the industry. I’m not defined by my job, and I’m really interested in meeting the people he works with.”
