10 Modern Sitcoms That Are 10/10, No Notes

Published

on

Sitcoms are the band of television — or sometimes, exactly what viewers are looking for when they want something easy to unwind to. They are easy to watch, relatively lighthearted, and most of the time don’t require much commitment. Most importantly, they know how to make people laugh.

However, in today’s world, it takes more than comedic chops to keep viewers engaged. In the current political and cultural climate, sitcoms must also reflect the modern changes of modern life, all while remaining funny. After all, no medicine is better than laughter. Without further ado, here are 10 modern sitcoms that are a 10/10, no notes.

‘Ted Lasso’ (2020–Present)

It’s an American invasion in Ted Lasso. Kansas City football coach Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis) is recruited by English soccer/football club A.F.C. Richmond as its new coach. The problem is, Ted has no clue about the sport. With his new team underestimating and Richmond’s fan base doubting his abilities, Ted proves otherwise with the power of kindness.

Ted Lasso is the ultimate culture clash. Nothing is more awkward and entertaining than watching Ted’s Southern hospitality collide with the British people’s brutally honest demeanor. On a bigger picture, the show also presents these football players at their most hilarious in their personal lives. Underneath the machismo of the sport, these players are big softies at heart. In a world where it’s easy to be cynical due to the devastating news, Ted Lasso‘s advocacy for utter kindness is wholeheartedly refreshing.

‘Kim’s Convenience’ (2016–2021)

Don’t forget to stop by Toronto’s favorite corner shop. Kim’s Convenience follows first-generation Korean immigrants, Mr. Sang-il Kim/Appa (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) and Mrs. Yong-mi Kim/Umma (Jean Yoon), as they tend to their humble little store. From generational to cultural gaps, the two stumble into delightfully awkward moments with their customers, most notably the “gay discount” schtick.

Thankfully, they have their more culturally assimilated daughter, Janet (Andrea Bang), to rely on whenever they’re stuck in an awkward crisis. As a show about immigrants making it on the other side of the world, Kim’s Convenience may be full of misunderstandings, but these characters also embrace where they come from. Whether it’s Appa breaking into Hapkido in the middle of the store, or old-school superstitions, it’s unapologically Korean. As immigration becomes an increasingly crucial topic within today’s heated political climate, Kim’s Convenience shows how joy itself can be a form of resistance.

Based on the 2014 mockumentary of the same name, What We Do in the Shadows follows four centuries-old vampire roommates who spend their immortality bumbling through modern life on Staten Island. Although being undead has its perks, Nandor the Relentless (Kayvan Novak), Laszlo Cravensworth (Matt Berry), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), and Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch) are stuck in their own silly little existential crises.

With all the time in their hands, these vampires sure know how to make use of it to fill their boredom. What We Do in the Shadows takes viewers from one misadventure to another, stripping away the traditional mysteriousness of these bloodthirsty creatures. Whether it’s doing very human errands like going to the supermarket or discovering Van Helsing blood, these vampires have the best (or worst) of both worlds. Beneath the fangs and centuries-old demons in What We Do in the Shadows, the joke is simply and utterly relatable: having terrible roommates. Whether it’s avoiding chores or refusing to pay the bills, these vampires need to — no pun intended — grow up.

Based on the 1975 series of the same name, One Day at a Time follows the Cuban-American Alvarez family living in Echo Park, Los Angeles. Single mother Penélope Alvarez (Justina Machado) is a former United States Army Nurse Corps nurse trying to find her footing in civilian life. With three generations living in one apartment, Penélope is often dragged into family mishaps.

In between raising her outspoken children and clashing with her tradition-loving Cuban mother, there’s never a boring day in the Alvarez household. But when the show isn’t joking around, One Day at a Time knows how to get serious. The series doesn’t shy away from familiar realities — from Penelope’s PTSD to her ex-husband’s alcoholism — showing that life may be hard, but we can alway scope with a bit of laughter along the way. No parent is perfect. Beyond its immigrant story, One Day at a Time validates exhausted mothers who are often messy, overworked, and stretched thin — especially when the family is of little help. Yet no matter how much they nag at each other, they are the ones who stay with you, no matter how dark it gets.

The Good Place follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), a selfish and self-absorbed sales agent who dies and is mistakenly sent to a heaven-like afterlife called the Good Place. Created by the immortal architect Michael (Ted Danson), it’s meant for virtuous souls who’ve done good in their past lives. Eleanor quickly realizes that she’s not supposed to be here and secretly hides her wrongdoings.

The afterlife can be a touchy subject, but The Good Place knows how to have fun with it without getting too personal. Trying to hide her true identity, Eleanor often causes chaos in this “heaven-like” realm, from setting off a fire alarm to disrupting a neighborhood potluck. But if heaven’s willing, maybe Eleanor can learn a thing or two about redemption in this “life.” The Good Place shows what it actually means to shed your ego in exchange for accountability. There are missteps along the way, yet the most meaningful moral growth comes from making and learning from your mistakes.

When you put five reluctant twenty-somethings in one building, you get Adults. Issa (Amita Rao), Billie (Lucy Freyer), Samir (Malik Elassal), Anton (Owen Thiele), and Paul Baker (Jack Innanen) are roomies and de facto best friends crammed into a New York City house. Fumbling their way through adulthood, their co-dependent friendship brings out the best and worst in each other.

From now knowing how social security works, to blowing a one-shot job promotion, Adults is just as amusing as it is accurate. Nobody truly gets the anxiety of collapsing into unemployment, or having your boiler break down in cold weather. No matter how outrageous the situation, what’s most important is having people who show up through the highs and lows. Most audiences understand the pains of adulting. While becoming a full-fledged adult is often difficult, Adults shows that the best remedy is the people who help you survive your quarter-life crisis — with a little laughter along the way.

‘St. Denis Medical’ (2024–Present)

No better and more inappropriate place to joke around the job than a hospital. St. Denis Medical follows the overworked healthcare workers of a poorly financed hospital as they provide the best care possible to patients. Overseen by oncology surgeon Joyce (McLendon-Covey), she’s in charge of making sure hospital operations run smoothly — without staff sacrificing their own sanity.

Hospitals can be some of the scariest places for people. In a high-stakes environment like this, it’s easy for health workers to lose their cool. But just like patients, the staff are human too. In a place where death could be around any corner, St. Denis Medical shows how difficult it is to remain empathetic without being consumed by the grim reality of a hospital. The staff may not always come across as the heroes they imagine themselves to be. However, given the amount of care and compassion they’re expected to show every single day, the show gives these employees their flowers.

‘Shrinking’ (2023–Present)

The world’s worst therapist is ready to psychoanalyze you in Shrinking. Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) has spent the past year grieving the death of his wife, and work hasn’t been easy. With patients rambling about their problems without making progress, Jimmy finally snaps and gives them the cold, hard truth — which, in a surprising turn of events, actually works.

Part workplace comedy, part family sitcom, Jimmy’s scientifically and ethically questionable methods often land him in hilarious situations with his patients. From getting his patient beat up to forcing another to talk to his barista, these small, chaotic interactions are pieces of the bigger picture: figuring out how to find meaning in life after mourning. Grief isn’t a one-way street, and it’s definitely not linear. There will be peaks worth celebrating and dips worth crying over, much like the ones in Shrinking. There’s no simple step-by-step guide to mourning; it’s about getting through each day with whatever capacity we can conjure up.

‘Ghosts’ (2021–Present)

Ghosts follows cheerful journalist Samantha (Rose McIver) and her partner Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar), an aspiring city chef, who inherit a rundown country mansion and decide to turn it into a bed-and-breakfast. Little do they know, their charming, humble abode is a hotbed for a lively, eclectic group of ghosts. But with all their money spent on renovations, it’ll be a waste to throw the entire project away.

These ghosts are nothing like the vengeful demons often seen in horror. They’re more like your annoying neighbors. From a sassy Prohibition-era lounge singer to a 1700s militiaman and a 1960s hallucinogen-loving hippie, these housemates are more hilarious than horrifying. When Samantha actually starts seeing these spirits, things get a lot more comedically complicated. Just like the spirits in Ghosts, human audiences can learn a thing or two about moving on. Sometimes our problems freeze us in a state of “purgatory” — much like the mansion. It’s easy to feel trapped in our worst habits. The only way forward is by confronting these demons head-on.

These teachers have no time for a break. Abbott Elementary follows a group of dedicated, passionate teachers, and their slightly tone-deaf principal in a Philadelphia public school. Despite being underfunded and outnumbered, they are determined to help their students succeed and make a positive impact on their lives. Of course, that is if the difficult school district doesn’t breathe down their necks.

No teacher is perfect at Abbott, but at least they’re trying their best. Second-grade teacher Janine (Quinta Brunson) is eagerly enthusiastic about making positive changes at the school, which often throws the staff into unwanted situations. Still, they see the good intentions in Janine, and together, they band together to ensure their students receive the best learning experience possible despite the limitations. All too often, students take for granted the effort teachers put in. No blame to them — it’s because these teachers make it look so easy. Abbott Elementary highlights the real work involved in teaching kids not just their ABCs, but also how to grow into good human beings.

Idris Elba’s Intense Apple TV Thriller Didn’t Need a Season 2

Published

on

Idris Elba in Hijack

Sometimes the old phrase, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” isn’t right for every situation. After the success of Hijack’s first season on Apple TV, the streamer naturally tried to replicate that same white-knuckle, high-stakes adventure for a Season 2. Unfortunately, Hjack sacrifices dramatic storytelling for action.

The Idris Elba-led drama had a unique Season 1, depicting a hijacking high in the sky, essentially giving an hour-by-hour adrenaline rush as help from the ground and Sam Nelson in the sky try to save the lives of everyone on board and in London. It worked as a novel idea at first, but then transporting the action below ground on a vehicle that has the ability to stop and start, and using Sam as part of the plot, simply didn’t work. Hijack simply didn’t need a Season 2.

Apple TV’s Thriller ‘Hijack’ Relied Too Much on Its Title for Season 2

The anticipation of a follow-up season was understandable, as the question of how one man could find himself in yet another hijacking was intriguing. Then, the big twist came at the top of the season, revealing that Sam Nelson was hijacking the U-Bahn train in Germany. As Season 2 trudged along, it became clear that it was much more complicated than that. It was just a facade. The reason? It was part of an act of revenge.

Because the premise of Hijack is about a hijacking, rather than making the series a brilliant one-off, Hijack returned with the hopes that a second hijacking experience would be equally gripping. With this plot for Season 2, the series didn’t need to come back. If it was desperate to bring Elba back, the series could have explored the same aftermath of revenge on John Bailey-Brown (Ian Burfield) for the death of his son, sans hijacking. Hijack was a bit too beholden to its title.

Idris Elba in Hijack

Now That It’s Returning for Season 2, You Have To Binge Idris Elba’s Pulse-Pounding Apple TV Action Thriller

Remain calm.

The intriguing element of Season 2 is watching a man on a mission of revenge. In a sense, it mirrors the hijackers’ actions in Season 1, who sought to fulfill their retribution. The difference is in perspective. Sam is seen as a hero, while the Season 1 hijackers were painted as villains, despite similar objectives. Had Hijack removed the underground hijacking, allowing Sam to embark on his journey like an action hero, we would understand it as still part of the Hijack universe. The show should be about Sam, not literal hijacking.

Idris Elba’s Apple TV Thriller ‘Hijack’ Worked in the Sky, but Not Underground

Lest we forget, Hijack offers action through scenes featuring those aiding Sam in stopping the events. Both seasons integrated multiple off-site scenes, from control rooms to homes, but the subplots this season, including Marsha Smith-Nelson’s (Christine Adams) woods ordeal, messed with the pacing as well. Plus, the German allies working on tracking the U-Bahn lack the heroism we saw from the likes of Alice Sinclair (Eve Myles), the humble air traffic controller. The energy and stakes are sadly not at the peak of Season 1.

The first season was extremely gripping because not only was the hijacking in the sky, but it was a literal non-stop adventure released almost in real time. Yes, Season 2 is a multi-hour expedition, but with the underground train able to stop and start. With many individuals able to affect its movement, the action no longer feels as high-stakes as it once did. There are bombs attached to carriages and some shady individuals who are on board to cause a stir, but it’s not nearly as captivating as a flying vehicle with a bevy of hijackers on board.

Even though the plane in Season 1 was massive, it was much more contained than the multi-carriage U-Bahn, where movement from train car to train car isn’t as unifying for passengers. The slower pace of Season 2 made the action dwindle, and by the end, it becomes crystal clear that Idris Elba’s thrilling Apple TV series should’ve stayed in the air.

Hollywood Directors And Producers Are Reportedly Keying Into The Disney Alum’s Story

The controversy that broke out over her thought-provoking piece on “The Cut” seemingly sowed the seeds for a broader creative perspective among producers and directors in the industry.

As noted by The Blast, the insider explained that some major production companies are keen to leverage Tisdale’s expertise in acting and producing to express interest in collaborating with her to adapt the story into a movie.

In her story, Tisdale revealed that she had joined a mom group after welcoming her babies, hoping to find a community of like-minded women, including her celebrity friends such as Meghan Trainor, Hilary Duff, and Mandy Moore.

Unfortunately, she began to be intentionally excluded from social gatherings, prompting her to send a final message to the group to end the drama.

Ashley Tisdale On The Advantage Of Living Life Offline

The actress typically dealt with the unhealthy dynamics on social media by constantly clocking out. According to her, while she loves social media in ways that can be inspiring, funny, and keep her connected, she also understands that she is not meant to live her entire life online.

The Blast reported that the actress noted that taking time off the internet often feels like a reminder to live in the moment instead of living on the edge, looking for what to post and how to stay on trend.

Tisdale added that being online constantly put her in an unhealthy state of alertness, rather than allowing her to experience moments naturally. She recalled the first time she took time off social media, stressing that it helped give her the gift of perspective, where she could still care and stay informed, but on her own terms.

“You can open your phone without thinking and suddenly be absorbing outrage and fear, usually without looking for it,” the actress stated about how overwhelming a constant stream of information can be.

One of the celebrities identified in the article reacted to the claims, noting that while she is not a stranger to online controversies, social media fans made the situation worse with half-baked stories, lies, and clickbait.

Duff addressed an allegation about how none of the moms at school like her, nor do the teachers, clarifying that she loves all the women at school. Although Duff tried to defend herself against fans’ speculation, her estranged sister, Haylie, was on Tisdale’s support team and even liked her article on “The Cut.”

Haylie went ahead and shared a picture of her daughter and Tisdale’s kid on a playdate, which earned a repost from the “High School Musical” star.

Shia LaBeouf is reportedly not to blame for his split with Mia Goth. The pair separated last year after an on-and-off relationship spanning 13 years.

Now, those within the actor’s circle have claimed that he did his best to save his relationship with Goth, contrary to claims from those close to his estranged wife that he was at fault.

The reports come after Shia LaBeouf was involved in an altercation at the Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans.

Shia LaBeouf’s relationship with Mia Goth has continued to make headlines following a recent report that they went their separate ways quietly last year.

While initial claims pointed to LaBeouf being at fault for the split, his close circle has now refuted the allegations, per TMZ.

According to a source, the relationship between the duo “just didn’t work out,” adding that LaBeouf wasn’t to blame.

Even with the relationship being over, LaBeouf is said to be committed to raising their daughter, Isabel, whom they welcomed in 2022.

Sources also say LaBeouf has stayed actively involved in their child’s life, even while living in New Orleans, and was reportedly fully present and hands-on while Goth was busy with work commitments.

A close source of LaBeouf also claimed that not only was he not at fault for the end of the relationship, but he also did everything he could to save it.

The source said LaBeouf even tried various approaches, including taking vacations and even exploring religion, in the hope that Goth would be persuaded to stay.

However, every step forward felt like “ten steps back” during those attempts, as while Goth cared for LaBeouf, she ultimately didn’t want to be married to him.

One other insider close to Goth then insisted that LaBeouf was the problem, citing his drinking issues as a key factor in his relationship breaking up.

They also claimed that Goth didn’t believe the actor was ready or able to address his personal challenges and grow as a person.

The Classic Monster Masterpiece That Inspired ‘The Bride!’ Comes Alive on March 1

Published

on

The Bride of Frankestein Movie Poster

Jessie Buckley is set to become The Bride! in Maggie Gyllenhaal‘s new reimagining of Frankenstein next week. To prepare yourself, you might want to watch Bride of Frankenstein, the 1935 horror movie that introduced the world to the monster’s better (or worse) half. If so, there’s good news: The Universal horror hit that just turned 90 is headed to a new streamer next month.

HBO Max will host Bride of Frankenstein starting on March 1, 2026. It’s a clever bit of cross-promotion, as the streamer’s corporate parent, Warner Bros., will release The Bride! in theaters a few days later. The film has Boris Karloff-sized shoes to fill; Bride of Frankenstein was directed by James Whale, who had already filmed Frankenstein, The Old Dark House, and The Invisible Man. Steeped in Christian imagery, raw emotion, and genuine horror, Bride of Frankenstein is generally considered to be the greatest of all the Universal Horror movies of the 1930s and 1940s, surpassing its predecessor. The fleeting but indelible image of the creature’s bride, swathed in bandages and with an electrified beehive hairdo, has become one of the most iconic sights in horror cinema.

What Is ‘The Bride of Frankenstein’ About?

Taking place after the explosive climax of 1931’s Frankenstein, both Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive, Dracula) and his creation (Karloff) have survived. Frankenstein is nursed back to health by his fiancée, Elizabeth (Valerie Hobson, Kind Hearts and Coronets), while the monster wanders the wilderness. Still believing he is destined to unlock the secrets of life and death, Henry visits his old mentor, Dr. Septimus Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger, Scrooge), who wishes to create a mate for Frankenstein’s monster. Although Frankenstein initially cooperates, he becomes increasingly unsettled by Pretorius’ madness; however, he’s press-ganged into assisting when Pretorius’ goons kidnap his now-wife. Soon, the female creature (Elsa Lanchester, who also plays Mary Shelley in a fictional prologue about a continuation of Frankenstein) is ready to be brought to life, but the creature may have some objections…

The making of the film and Whale’s later life were chronicled in the 1998 biopic Gods and Monsters, which starred Ian McKellen as Whale. It was written and directed by Bill Condon, who was attached to direct a remake of Bride of Frankenstein for the now-defunct Dark Universe.

The Bride of Frankenstein will stream on HBO Max starting on March 1, 2026. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

This 88-Minute Comedy With Peak Tina Fey & Steve Carell Is About to Become the Perfect Weekend Rewatch

Published

on

date-night-social-feature

From the 2000s through the early 2010s, Steve Carell was America’s comedy king. He was ever-present across the entire genre, whether on television with his defining role as Michael Scott on The Office, or on the big screen in everything from Anchorman to Crazy, Stupid, Love, and Despicable Me. One of his most unexpected co-stars, however, was Mark Wahlberg. At the time, the Oscar nominee remained best known for his more dramatic thriller roles like The Departed and The Fighter. In 2010, however, he leaned into his own humorous side not once, but twice, most notably sharing the screen with Will Ferrell in the beloved buddy comedy, The Other Guys, while also joining Carell and Tina Fey for the less-heralded Date Night.

Directed by Deadpool & Wolverine helmer Shawn Levy, Date Night serves as the perfect vehicle to unite Carell, Fey, and Wahlberg by combining an action movie and a rom-com in one package. The Office and 30 Rock stars play married couple Phil and Claire Foster, who fear the spark has been lost from their marriage. To shake things up, they plan a night out at the hottest restaurant in Manhattan, only to be thrust into the most unforgettable night of their lives when they claim another couple’s reservation. In taking the place of said couple, they also become the targets of a group of armed thugs in search of a flash drive, beginning a chaotic chase across the city. Wahlberg enters the picture as security agent Holbrooke Grant, who helps the couple handle a situation that they are very clearly in over their heads with, and looks good while doing it.

Fittingly, Date Night has the making of a great date night movie with its mix of riotous and memorable lines, like Carell’s much-quoted “kill shot” bit, suspense, and newfound spark between the Fosters in their perilous situation. It also just became even easier for HBO Max subscribers to watch, as it’s now available to stream on the platform as part of a wave of new additions for March. Carell, Fey, and Wahlberg are joined in the rom-com by a star-studded cast that also features Taraji P. Henson, Common, Jimmi Simpson, William Fichtner, Leighton Meester, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Mila Kunis, and more. At the time of its release, it garnered a respectable $152.3 million at the box office, though reviews were a bit more mixed. However, most critics had high praise for the starring duo’s comedy chops and chemistry.

Steve Carell Will Soon Return to Television With a Complete Reinvention

Carell recently reunited with Fey for the Netflix comedy series The Four Seasons to critical acclaim last year in a return to television. 2026 will see his small-screen efforts continue, with the upcoming HBO dramedy series Rooster from Shrinking creator Bill Lawrence and co-showrunner Matt Tarses. He plays Greg Russo, a noted novelist who finds himself sucked into the world of academia after visiting a campus for a reading. Complicating matters is that his daughter (Charly Clive) is a professor there, forcing the duo to confront their rocky relationship. Also starring Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai, the show will premiere next weekend on March 8, with episodes joining Date Night on the HBO Max catalog thereafter.

Date Night checks into HBO Max on March 1. Stay tuned here at Collider for more on all the biggest titles coming to and leaving streaming.

Dennis Quaid’s Costar Glad She Got to Slap Him Amid His Trump Support

Dennis Quaid’s Any Given Sunday costar Lauren Holly took the actor to task for his support of President Donald Trump.

“At least I got to slap him real hard in Any Given Sunday,” Holly, 62, joked via Threads in response to Quaid, 71, traveling with Senator Ted Cruz on Air Force One to attend Trump’s speech in Corpus Christie, Texas, on Friday, February 27.

Cruz, 55, shared footage of Quaid and Trump, 79, sitting down together on Air Force One and referenced the actor playing Ronald Reagan in a 2024 biopic.

“I’d like to ask President Reagan what you think of President Trump,” Cruz asks Quaid in the clip, with the actor replying in his Reagan impression: “Well, I think he’s like me on steroids, actually!”

It really is.” “It’s the closest […]

Another user posted footage of Quaid saying he “loves Donald Trump” at the Texas event on Friday, with Holly chiming in: “It’s crazy to me at this point.”

As her posts started to go viral, a Threads user wrote: “Watching @laurenholly comment on all the Dennis Quiad (SIC) capitulation is top tier @threads energy. Make fascists uncomfortable by any means possible…”

Quaid has been open about his political support and personal affection for Trump over the past few years. He told Piers Morgan Uncensored in 2024 that “the only thing I liked about Trump was everything he did” as president.

“People might call him an a**hole, but he’s my a**hole,” Quaid quipped at the time.

More recently, he described himself as “a common-sense independent” on The Greg Laurie Show, though he acknowledged that he leans “more conservative in my head.”

He praised Trump for his approachability, calling the politician “very personable, incredibly funny, a good listener and a surprisingly approachable person.”

“[Trump is] very funny. And really genuine. He wouldn’t be president if he wasn’t genuine,” Quaid insisted. “The people who voted for him, they know that he has their best interests at heart, that he is a genuine person.”

Scott Moore/Shutterstock Dennis Quaid and Laura Savoie’s relationship has been met with adversity over the years, but they’ve only come out stronger. Quaid had been married three times prior to meeting Savoie when she was a 26-year-old Ph.D. student at the University of Texas in 2019. The actor was married to P.J. Soles from 1978-1983 […]

He went on, “I’ve never seen anybody with that kind of energy. People say that about me, but he’s really got a lot of energy.”

Quaid opened up exclusively to Us Weekly about his faith earlier this month, saying that religion played a huge role in connecting him to his fourth wife, Laura Savoie.

“God is in our relationship. That [had] never even occurred to me before,” he told Us. “I thought, ‘Well, I have a relationship with God, so did she,’ but to have God be the third entity in the relationship is kind of a new idea. But that’s really the way it is.”

The actor added, “Otherwise … you look to the other person to solve your problems, and we’re not equipped to do that. There’s a lot of things that we have, the baggage coming in [to a relationship], and it’s stuff that you need an expert [to deal with] — and that would be God.”

Quaid was previously married to P.J. Soles from 1978 to 1983, Meg Ryan from 1991 to 2001 and Kimberly Buffington from 2004 to 2018. He and Savoie originally met in a Las Vegas bar before eloping in Santa Barbara, California, in June 2020.

Celebrity Honorary Doctorates Degrees Under Scrutiny

The Leaders Esteem Christian Bible University has come under scrutiny, and so has the plethora of honorary doctorate degrees it has awarded over the years. Trina, Tyrese, Yung Joc, Towanda Braxton, Cynthia Bailey, and Trick Daddy are just some of the celebrities who have received honorary degrees from the institution.

But are they legit?

Now, The Shade Room’s Justin Carter is delving into the question and getting some answers, speaking to bible university’s founder, Dr. Verna Caddie, on ‘TSR Investigates.’

Are The Celebrity Honorary Doctorate Degrees From The Leaders Esteem Christian Bible University A Scam?

According to Carter, the Leaders Esteem Christian Bible University is an online institution “where students discover and grow in their God-given gifts and callings.” Furthermore, the school’s website notes that students can obtain Associate’s, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees. However, when Gladys Muturi dug into LECU, she ended up with questions rather than answers.

“I found a photo of the building, but it doesn’t look like a university building. It looked like an office building,” she told Carter. “[On the website] there was a donation page where you can donate $150-$3,000.”

Like Muturi, content creator Robert Coleman was questioning the validity of the school and its honorary degrees.

“When I see people like Trick Daddy, or Yung Joc, or a Cynthia Bailey — it’s just like, what have you done that’s significant for you to receive this type of award?” Coleman explained.

More On The Celebrity Honorary Doctorate Degrees

At that point, Carter noted the question of whether the school was using celebrity attendance to sell graduation tickets and earn money. Additionally, he also noted that the thought of whether the institution is seeking to prey on those interested in the “doctor” title.

Dr. Caddie shared her educational credentials and the inspiration behind founding LECU. Additionally, Carter shares what he learned after looking into whether the school is registered with the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, and his overall conversation with Dr. Caddie.
