Elland Road capacity to expand to 53,000
Leeds United Football Club has announced plans to increase the capacity of its stadium to accommodate 53,000 supporters.
The Elland Road ground can currently hold 37,645 fans and has been full for every home match played in the last six years.
There are also 26,000 supporters on the waiting list for season tickets.
The plans would also see the ground modernised to meet UEFA Category 4 regulations for “elite” European stadia.
Paraag Marathe, chairman of Leeds United and president of the club’s owners, 49ers Enterprises, said: “We recognise how important Elland Road is to the Leeds United fans and the wider community.
“The opportunity to refresh a century-old stadium, coupled with the legacy of Leeds United, is unprecedented.
“Our plans reinforce our commitment to the long-term success of the club and I am excited that we are going to be able to welcome thousands more supporters to every game, in a stadium that retains the unique atmosphere of Elland Road.
“We look forward to sharing our plans with supporters and the local community for their input.”
‘Enhanced atmosphere’
The capacity of the new Elland Road would be the seventh-largest of any club ground in the country.
The stadium has been the team’s home since Leeds United was formed in 1919.
Councillor James Lewis, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “Expanding and enhancing the existing ground will allow many more fans access to games while protecting the unique Elland Road atmosphere.
“This investment can also be a catalyst for wider regeneration plans for south Leeds, which represents an opportunity of national significance.
“Getting there will be easier with work to improve Leeds Station and the introduction of a White Rose rail station, along with the potential of a proposed mass transit route from the city centre close to the ground.
“We’ve had some very positive initial meetings with their team and look forward to working with them on this important vision, to ensure this project moves forward and unlocks significant benefits to the city and its communities.”

Everton takeover: Friedkin Group agree deal – so is saga about to end?
The Friedkins are immensely wealthy, with their billions being made in the car industry, but the handbrake was pulled on a deal for them to take control of the Toffees only two months ago.
The group agreed a deal in principle to purchase Moshiri’s majority shareholding in June, but talks were called off a month later after the two parties failed to finalise an agreement.
But they had never really gone away, maintaining a relationship with stakeholders after providing a loan of £200m in June, which is expected to be turned into equity.
While US entrepreneur John Textor tried to jump in to do a deal, his involvement was complicated by owning a stake in Crystal Palace, and Moshiri had maintained dialogue in the background with the Friedkin Group.
The deal was reignited and a statement on Monday said that they were looking forward to “providing stability to the club and sharing our vision for its future.”
The group have provided Everton with a further cash injection and would have no trouble clearing further external debt of around £400m.
An agreement has been reached with Rights and Media Funding who are owed £225m by the club, while there is also agreement over a £200m loan from 777 with financial firm A-Cap, who have seized 777’s assets.
The club, meanwhile, posted losses of £89.1m for the accounts covering the 2022-23 season, with net debt rising to £330.6m.
Owner and chief executive, Dan Friedkin, is listed on Forbes, external as the 383rd richest person in the world with a net worth of £5.7bn.
Friedkin is an aeroplane enthusiast, his grandfather founded an airline in the US, while he himself piloted a Spitfire in the Hollywood blockbuster Dunkirk.
He also reportedly owns one of the largest collections of vintage military war planes in America.
After years in the doldrums, are Everton now on course to fly high again and be propelled to new horizons?

Erling Haaland a coward for throwing ball at Gabriel – Ian Wright
Erling Haaland is a “coward” for throwing the ball at the back of Gabriel’s head after Manchester City’s late equaliser against Arsenal, says former Gunners striker Ian Wright.
City striker Haaland collected the ball from the net after John Stones’ goal and threw it at the back of the Arsenal defender, who was looking the other way and had put his shirt over his head in frustration.
The Video Assistant Referee reviewed the incident but chose not to intervene because it was not deemed a red card offence.
The Football Association says it will not take any further action over any of the incidents during the game, including a heated exchange between the players at the final whistle.
“The one thing that boiled me up properly was Haaland’s coward’s move,” Wright said in a video on Instagram.
“Throwing the ball at Gabi’s head when he’s not looking. When Gabi’s back’s turned to him. Real coward’s move. Gabi would look him in the eye, you know.
“That’s what bothered me more than anything else. I thought you [Haaland] were bigger than that.”

The New Saints to play Europa Conference home games in Shrewsbury
Shrewsbury’s Croud Meadow Stadium is 22 miles from Saints original village base of Llansantfraid and under 20 miles from Oswestry, where they have played home matches over the English border since the redevelopment of Park Hall in 2007.
In 2003 The New Saints played a Uefa Cup qualifying game against Manchester City at what was then named the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, but Harris had already ruled out the possibility of staging this season’s European ties at Cardiff City Stadium.
“Places like Cardiff are three hours away from where we are, so our fans and stakeholders can’t really get there,” Harris had said after beating FK Panevezys in the play-offs to qualify for the group stages.
“It’s got to be somewhere more local.
“Wrexham and Shrewsbury would be most ideal for us, but I’m not sure the Racecourse is available, so it’s our priority to get the games in a stadium that can cater for the games, but also giving the people around us a chance to go and watch.”
Their first match at Croud Meadow will be on Thursday, 24 October (20:00 BST), when they host Astana of Kazakhstan.
Djurgarden, from Sweden, will travel to Shrewsbury on Thursday, 28 November (17:45 GMT) before the visit of Greek team Panathinaikos on Thursday, 12 December (20:00 GMT).
Liam Dooley, Shrewsbury Town chief executive, said: “We are delighted to welcome The New Saints to the Croud Meadow. A lot of work has been completed behind the scenes on this by both clubs working together and we are really happy to get this over the line.
“It gives us the chance to showcase our stadium around Europe, as well as providing additional revenue for the club, and supporting TNS on their journey.”

Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen to have knee surgery
Barcelona goalkeeper and captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen is to have knee surgery on Monday after suffering a ruptured patella tendon during Sunday’s La Liga victory against Villarreal.
The Germany international was carried off on a stretcher during the first half after his right knee buckled as he landed while catching the ball.
Barcelona say they will provide a further update after his operation, with no timescale yet put on the 32-year-old’s recovery.
Ter Stegen has made more than 400 appearances for the club since joining from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2014.
Hansi Flick’s side beat Villarreal 3-1 to maintain their 100% record in La Liga and move four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of the table.
