The 3 major health risks of not turning your heating on - plus tips to stay warm at home while keeping costs down

MANY households are cautious about their energy use during the winter months, setting their thermostats below the recommended levels or choosing not to switch their heating on at all.

But a cold home environment to save money can have a detrimental impact on your health, Suzanne Wylie, GP and medical adviser for IQ Doctor, warns.

She said when the temperature in your home is too low, the body must work harder to maintain its core temperature.

This increased strain can impact various bodily systems, particularly for vulnerable groups like the elderly, young children, or those with pre-existing health conditions.

Dr Wylie listed three key effects:

  1. Heightened susceptibility to respiratory infections
  2. Worsening of cardiovascular conditions
  3. Increased risk of falls due to stiffness and slower response times

Read more on winter health

The three main areas of the body that can be significantly affected by not putting your heating on are: breathing, skin, and the cardiovascular system.

How can avoiding putting the heating on affect your breathing?

Yes, a cold home really can worsen respiratory conditions.

Dr Wylie explained: “Cold air is often drier, which can irritate the airways.

“This makes it harder to breathe, particularly for those with asthma or other chronic lung conditions.

“Additionally, cooler temperatures may increase the risk of respiratory infections, such as colds or flu, because viruses tend to survive and spread more easily in colder, drier air.”

What can a cold home do to your skin?

Cold environments without adequate heating can lead to dry, cracked, or irritated skin

My feet always get freezing during the winter – my £1 hack will keep them toasty, with no need to put the heating on

Dr Wylie advised: “Without the warmth and humidity provided by heating, skin can lose moisture, leading to increased dryness, flakiness, and potentially even eczema flare-ups.

“In severe cases, this dryness can cause small cracks in the skin, which may increase the risk of infection.”

What can it do to your cardiovascular system?

When the body is exposed to cold, blood vessels constrict in an effort to preserve core temperature.

This can increase blood pressure as the heart works harder to pump blood through narrower vessels.

Dr Wylie said: “For those with pre-existing cardiovascular issues, this increased strain can raise the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other complications.

“In colder weather, people are also less likely to be active, which can further strain the cardiovascular system over time.”

Can serious health problems develop?

Especially in older adults and those with pre-existing health issues, inadequate heating can contribute to serious health problems.

Conditions such as pneumonia, heart attacks, and strokes are more likely to occur with prolonged exposure to the cold, warned Dr Wylie.

She added: “The immune system can also become weakened, leaving the body more susceptible to various infections and other complications.”

What should you do if you can’t afford to have your heating on all the time?

There are several reasons why people may not be able to afford to put their heating on, including financial constraints, the need to save money for other essentials, or a preference to save money.

Dr Deborah Lee, of Dr Fox Online Pharmacy, recommended the following:

  • Look at Turn2Us, where you can find details of local government agencies that can help with issues such as housing and finance.
  • Try contacting your local council for help and advice about heating.
  • Find out about the Housing Support Fund, which is not means-tested.
  • Make sure you get the winter fuel payment if you are eligible.
  • Take advantage of the network of warm spaces available free of charge over the winter.
  • Speak to your GP. The Social Prescribing Team may be able to help you.

Advice for keeping warm

Keeping warm over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression.

As well as heating your home to at least 18C, particularly in the rooms that you regularly use, you should keep your bedroom windows closed at night.

You should also make sure you’re getting all the help that you’re entitled to.

There are grants, benefits and advice available to make your home more energy efficient, improve your heating or help with bills.

Remember that other people, such as older neighbours, friends and family members, may need some extra help over the winter.

Keep in touch with your friends, neighbours and family and ask if they need any practical help, or if they’re feeling unwell.

Make sure they’re stocked up with enough food supplies for a few days, in case they cannot go out.

If they do need to go out in the cold, encourage them to wear shoes with a good grip and a scarf around the mouth to protect them from cold air, and to reduce their risk of chest infections.

Also, make sure they get any prescription medicines before the holiday period starts and if bad weather is forecast.

Some cheap tricks to stay warm at home while keeping costs down include:

  • Warm your body not your house – so wear lots of layers made from insulating materials like wool
  • Or if need to, just heat one room and stay there as much as you can during the day
  • Avoid alcohol – it prevents your blood vessels from constricting, so you lose body heat
  • Move around as much as you can – sitting still for long periods reduces circulation
  • Open your curtains – the sun still provides warmth, even if it’s cold outside
  • Use a draught excluder – line your windows with rubber seals and use DIY excluder at the bottom of your doors
  • Move your sofa away from external walls – sitting with your back against an internal wall will instantly feel a lot warmer
  • Fit tin foil behind your radiator – it will reflect heat back into the room
  • Bleed your radiators – air could be trapped inside, creating cold spots

35 Min BUILD & BURN II Home Workout | Drop Set Dumbbell Workout + Cool Down

This 35 minute drop set dumbbell workout is exactly what you need to BUILD muscle and endurance. Strength training with dumbbells is incredibly effective at not only building muscle strength and tone, but the added weight places an extra amount of exertion on you throughout each of the exercises, resulting in more calories burned. This is key for losing body fat.

Here’s how this workout will go down:
– Each round consists of 3 exercises that are the same or similar movements.
– For most of the workout, the 1st exercise in each round will use x2 dumbbells.
– Drop to x1 dumbbell for the 2nd exercise in the round.
– Drop to bodyweight only for the 3rd exercise in the round.
– Each exercise is 20 sec, so you’ll complete all 3 exercises each round without rest, for a total of 60 seconds, before taking a 30 sec rest.
– There are a few exercises that are the exception to this as we do some unilateral movements, but the 20/20/20 second format will be consistent throughout the workout.

Map reveals area with WORST eating habits as Brits choose to swerve fruit & veg – how does your hometown fare? – The Sun

YORKSHIRE has the worst gut-health habits in the UK – consuming the least fruit and veg, water, nuts, and fermented foods.

But Scots and people in London get closest to five a day, with Londoners also tucking into the most fermented grub.

1

A poll of 2,000 people has revealed which areas have the best and worst gut health habitsCredit: Getty

Londoners also came top for hydration, drinking an average of five glasses of water per day – although not quite matching the recommended guidelines of six to eight 250ml glasses of water.

The poll of 2,000 people has revealed which regions are home to residents with, on average, the best and worst gut health habits.

It also emerged a fifth of those living in Wales reported suffering from bloating a few times per week, whereas 28 per cent in the West Midlands never struggled with it.

Those from the North East are the gassiest, with 26 per cent suffering daily – more than twice as many as those in Scotland (12 per cent).

And Scots are the worst for toilet habits – with 36 per cent saying their poo habits are never consistent.

The study was commissioned by Yakult, which has teamed up with Professor Glenn Gibson from Reading University, who said: “It’s fascinating to see how diets and daily habits vary so much across the UK.

“What contributes to a healthy gut can often be forgotten or misunderstood – as many people just associate this with eating lots of fibre but, in truth, every type of food group plays a part.

“Having regular bowel movements and getting the right amount and quality of sleep are also other things that help maintain a healthy gut and overall lifestyle.

“Getting less than the recommended 7-9 hours of quality sleep not only leaves us tired, but also disrupts our body’s natural rhythm, impacting the bacteria in our gut – this being a very active community of microbes that has profound impacts upon our overall health and wellbeing.

“Disturbances in sleep patterns can adversely affect the gut microbiota, which could hamper digestive health.

The study also found 36 per cent of Brits rate their overall gut health as ‘average’ – with only 11 per cent calling it ‘excellent’.

During a typical day, the average person will consume four portions of fruit or veg, but 44 per cent admit to never eating fermented foods

Only 35 per cent incorporate nuts into their everyday diet, while 28 per cent believe they are not getting enough fibre.

When it comes to liquids, 31 per cent drink less than the recommended daily guidelines of six to eight glasses each day, with the average person consuming just four 250ml glasses of water.

But 35 per cent of those polled via OnePoll.com admit they are guilty of not drinking enough fluids.

It also emerged that 37 per cent hold their hands up to not doing the recommended amount of 30 minutes exercise a day, with 35 per cent claiming they spend long periods either sitting or lying down.

Glenn added: “Eating a healthy diet which includes lots of colourful plant-foods such as fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, beans, chickpeas, lentils, herbs and spices helps to improve gut microbiota – which is in turn essential for supporting good gut (and overall) health.

“It is also worth adding fermented foods into your diet as well as keeping hydrated as water is essential and will improve almost every bodily process including digestion.

“Enough water intake is crucial to help food move effectively through the digestive system, helping to prevent constipation and facilitate nutrient availability.

“Exercise can help stimulate the digestive system – promoting more efficient digestion and help alleviate symptoms like bloating and constipation.

“Just 30 minutes a day is needed and can be incorporated into your everyday routine such as walking, cleaning or gardening.”

When quizzed on toilet habits, morning is the most common time for bowel movements (56 per cent), with half claiming it ‘always runs like clockwork’.

And the average time spent in the bathroom at any one time is six minutes – which is well within the recommended timeframe of 10 to 15 minutes per sitting.

A Yakult spokesperson said: “Maintaining good gut health is essential to overall well-being, as it impacts everything from digestion and nutrient absorption to immune function and even mental health.

“By focusing on a diet rich in fibre, fermented foods, and hydration, people can support their gut microbiome and enjoy better energy, mood, and long-term health.

“We are encouraging the nation to make small changes which can have a powerful influence on gut health and overall wellbeing.”
