Liam Rosenior Claims Moises Caicedo is 'Best Midfielder in the World'

Liam Rosenior made a bold claim in his first press conference as Chelsea manager, and his comments on one of his players have received mixed responses. The English coach has replaced Enzo Maresca at Stamford Bridge and takes charge of his first game tonight when the Blues visit EFL Championship outfit Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup.

It’s been a difficult season for the West London giants after winning the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer. Maresca’s relationship with the board became untenable, and the Italian was dismissed in December.

Maresca seemed to take issue with the club’s recruitment model, having wanted a new defender in the summer. But the club have spent a record amount of money on new signings under their owners, including in midfield.

Moises Caicedo arrived at Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2023 in a then-British transfer record £115 million deal. The Ecuadorian midfielder struggled to get going in west London but has since become one of the most highly rated players in the Premier League.

There are often arguments between supporters over who is the best midfielder in the top-flight with some siding with Arsenal’s Declan Rice over the Blues man. But Rosenior is of the opinion that he is not only number one in England but in the world.

Rosenior gave a glowing verdict of Caicedo while speaking to Joe Cole for TNT Sports:

“For me Moises Caicedo is the best midfield player in world football in my opinion.”

Caicedo is the heartbeat of the Blues’ midfield and was crucial last season and in the first half of the ongoing campaign. He’s made 16 league appearances this term, posting three goals and one assist.

Rosenior has yet to work with the Ecuador international, but his comments suggest he views him as one of his most important players. His claim over him being the best midfielder in the world has gone down well with the Stamford Bridge faithful but not so much rival fans.

Rosenior hasn’t even taken charge of his first game as Chelsea coach but he’s already got some fans onside with his thoughts on Caicedo. But rival fans and even one or two of his own club’s fanbase think he is completely wrong.

One fan joked that he should be dismissed:

“Yeah sack him now he’s deluded.”

“Liam doesn’t know ball unfortunately.”

One added:

“Delusional Chelsea have got a delusional manager on top.”

Another is already tired of hearing from the former Hull City manager:

“This man talks too much.”

One supporter suggested an Englishman is the world’s best midfield talent:

“Lol. Again, Jude Bellingham.”

But others backed up Rosenior and feel he’s spot on about the Ecuadorian. One fan wrote:

“He ain’t wrong about this.”

Another delved into Caicedo’s profile:

“Let’s be real, how many are well rounded as Caicedo, he gives you an 8/10 in any midfield attribute on a good day, it’s crazy.”

One was enthused:

“My gaffer knows ball.”

Another echoed this:

“He’s not wrong.”

Arsenal's Declan Rice before the match

Caicedo was part of the Chelsea side that won the Club World Cup and he pulled the strings in the middle of the park. But giving him the title of the best midfielder in the world might be stretch taking into consideration the performances of Arsenal’s Rice and Barcelona’s Pedri.
