VANCOUVER — Sure, it required a date with the league’s 32nd-ranked team and 65 minutes plus a shootout, but the Toronto Maple Leafs‘ six-game losing streak has come to an end.
“We’re on a one-game winning streak, so we’ll think about that,” Max Domi said Saturday at Rogers Arena, where celebratory music once again blasts from the visitors’ quarters.
What could well have shaped up to be a one-anthem shame — a clash between the NHL’s worst team and its most disappointing — turned into a pretty fun night at the barn.
When it comes to rallying all the way into a playoff berth, the struggling Leafs may have better odds of dressing more Petterssons than the Canucks.

But considering the state of these organizations, both positioned to be trading by deadline, Toronto’s annual 4 p.m. local in Vancouver was lively on and off the sheet.
The lottery-bound Canucks put forth an honest effort, the Leafs dug deep till the end of their 3-2 nailbiter, and every goal was rejoiced in by a crowd half-filled with Leafs supporters.
“It’s different, for sure, in Canada,” said Nicolas Roy, formerly of Vegas. “I feel like today, there was obviously a lot. In Winnipeg a couple weeks ago, there was a lot.
“Not all the teams have this luxury. So, it’s fun to be part of it, for sure.”

Fun isn’t a word heard around the Maple Leafs’ postgame availabilities much these days, and rediscovering that feeling required outshooting the Canucks 41-30 and goaltender Joseph Woll making a couple 10-bellers late.
Nothing comes easy, even the easy ones.
“It’s a good feeling in there right now, after losing six in a row. It’s tough,” coach Craig Berube said. “But they worked their way out of it tonight, in my opinion. Like, they weren’t gonna be denied.”
Despite losing minute-munching Morgan Rielly mid-game to an upper-body injury (the defenceman will undergo further evaluation Sunday), Toronto tilted the ice something fierce in the third period, outshooting the home side 18-5.

Jake McCabe (27:40) and ex-Canuck Oliver Ekman-Larsson (28:10) picked up the load.
“We talked before going in there,” Berube said. “Look, it’s gotta be our best period of the year. It was pretty close. I mean, we had the puck the whole period. Couldn’t find the back of the net.”
And a steady bounce-back performance by Joseph Woll — including what he described as “a bit of a heart attack” instinctual toe stop on Conor Garland in OT — ended the goaltender’s personal career-worst five-game skid.
“Glad I saved it,” Woll said.

All the Leafs’ smiles curled with relief.
“Yeah, we got it done,” chuckled Craig Berube, forehead stitches now removed. “It took a bit.”
A bit of time. A lot of effort.
“Emptied the tank tonight,” Domi said.

So, just how badly did the Maple Leafs need this win?
“Well,” Matthews said, “I think I could’ve said that a couple games ago.”

“That experience is going to be incredible,” Nylander says. “Playing with Team Sweden and playing against the best players in the world at an Olympics is something that doesn’t happen too often. And it’ll be a first for me, so I’m going to be very excited for it.”

Nylander, who tops all countrymen with 1.3 points per game, will be the face of Team Sweden.
“I’m fine with it, and I’m happy to be in that position for sure,” he says. And there’s only one shade of medal that’ll suffice.
“Going there for the mindset to be happy with the silver or bronze, I mean, why are you going there?”

The rookie hasn’t scored in nine games. He’s a dash-4 over that span, and Berube believes he was due a reset.
“He’s lost a bit of his swagger, and that’s a big part of his game. I’m not seeing that right now in his game. Maybe worried about making mistakes,” Berube said.
As a London Knights alum, Cowan isn’t used to losing. Berube believes losing skids like the one that smacked Toronto in January have a greater effect on young players.

Since that headline-snatching deal, the Canucks have the NHL’s worst record (33-44-10). The Rangers own the fifth-worst (37-42-9).

“He needed it,” Berube said.
“He could sense I was pretty gassed,” Matthews said. “I mean, I was out there for a couple minutes, and then that rush down took a lot of me.
Matthews tried to end the game by going high glove on a backhand deke, but goalie Nikita Tolopilo got a piece.

The captain saw space glove side, though, so he went back to the well in the shootout.
“Luckily, I got that second opportunity,” Matthews said. “I didn’t want to make that mistake twice, so I just stuck to it again and found that opening there.”
Former Nigeria Football Federation president Amaju Pinnick has explained why Arsenal attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze did not end up playing for the Super Eagles.
Eze, who came through the Queens Park Rangers academy, is now fully tied to England and was part of the Three Lions squad at the 2024 European Championship.
Nigeria first made a move for the talented midfielder in March 2017, when he was invited to train with the Super Eagles ahead of a friendly match against Burkina Faso. However, the game was later cancelled, denying Nigeria the chance to hand him a competitive appearance.

During his time as NFF president, Pinnick actively pushed for the recruitment of players with dual nationality. His efforts helped convince players such as Alex Iwobi, Ola Aina, Joe Aribo, Semi Ajayi and Josh Maja to choose Nigeria over England.
Pinnick said his interest in Eze grew stronger ahead of Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup play-off against Ghana. He revealed that he held a private meeting with the Crystal Palace star at his home in London to discuss a possible switch.
According to Pinnick, Eze was close to committing his international future to Nigeria before changes within the football federation disrupted the process. He said talks had progressed well and involved detailed discussions with the player and his family.

Pinnick explained that Eze, alongside his father and sister who manages his career, had agreed in principle, but asked for time as administrative changes and elections at the NFF took place. Soon after, Pinnick left office and the move did not progress further.
He added that Eze has a strong affection for Nigeria and was positive about representing the country.
Since making his senior debut for England in a European Championship qualifier against Malta, Eze has scored three goals in 16 appearances for the national team.
The Hamilton Tiger-Cats signed the veteran middle linebacker on Wednesday, a day after he was released by the Toronto Argonauts. McManis joining the Ticats wasn’t much of a surprise, though, as he lives in Toronto year-round and has a daughter and son.
His arrival also fills a need for Hamilton after Canadian middle linebacker Devin Veresuk signed this off-season with the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts.
McManis had 62 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and a forced fumble in 15 regular-season games last season.

According to data from more than 900,000 aftermarket NFL ticket compiled by SeatData.io and analyzed by Finance Buzz in September 2025, NFL tickets are less expensive closer to kickoff time during the regular season, though not by much, with an average of $20 in savings when purchased during game week. By contrast, fans who purchased their tickets three weeks or more in advance paid 3% more than the average ticket price.

Prices for the 2026 Super Bowl have already begun to drop, per TickPick, with the average price per ticket at nearly $10,000 10 days before the game, compared to about $6,400 six days before.
According to the NFL, tickets will be available for resale on the NFL Ticket Exchange up to 60 minutes after kickoff.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has lowered the age limit for resistance training to 14 in its gyms.
Young people are allowed to access the fitness suites from 11-years-old to use cardiovascular equipment and to be taught body weight exercises and now they will be able to weight train, using resistance kit and free weights from the age of 14. Qualified staff will be on hand to provide guidance and ensure appropriate use of equipment.
The change forms part of the council’s Sport and Active Recreation Strategy, which focuses on removing barriers to participation, developing lifelong healthy habits and creating more opportunities for young people to be active in ways that suit them.

The council offers the Junior Active Plus membership, for 11- to 16-year-olds which costs £12.05 per month. It gives access to gyms, swimming, classes and racquet sports.

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant on Tuesday offered a positive update on his recovery, saying his fitness is steadily improving and that he is optimistic about returning to competitive cricket soon. Pant was speaking on the sidelines of the World Pickleball League, where he attended as the co-owner of Mumbai Pickle Power. The 28-year-old revealed that he has been putting in extensive work at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as part of his rehabilitation programme.

“My fitness is getting better day by day. I am working hard at the Centre of Excellence and I think I’m going to be out (on the field) soon,” Pant said. Pant underlined how important it has been for him to stay mentally connected to cricket during long spells away from the field. He credited his deep love for the game, along with the backing of those around him, for helping him navigate the challenges of recovery. “When I am injured, one thing that always keeps me close to the game is the love for the game and the support from the people around you,” he said. The left-hander also spoke about the need for constant evolution as a professional athlete, stressing that improvement does not stop even during injury breaks. “As a cricketer, you always have to keep adding to your game. I need to keep looking to get better in each and every aspect of my overall gameplay,” Pant said. Reflecting on the multiple comebacks he has made in his career, Pant noted that time away from cricket has given him a fresh perspective on both the sport and life beyond it. However, he admitted that being cut off from top-level competition remains the toughest part of an injury layoff. “Every comeback has taught me something about life. After a few weeks of deliberation, the Las Vegas Raiders have presumptively hired their next head coach to replace Pete Carroll, and that man is ex-Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak.
It’s a leap from coordinator work into the main chair in Las Vegas for Kubiak.

Las Vegas’s agreement with Kubiak will be formally announced after the Super Bowl.
Until then, ESPN’s Ryan McFadden wrote, “The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to hire Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak as their next head coach after the Super Bowl, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Sunday. A deal between Kubiak and the Raiders cannot be finalized until after the Super Bowl, in which the Seahawks will play the New England Patriots next Sunday.”

“After meeting Saturday with the Raiders and Arizona Cardinals, Kubiak intends to work out a deal with Las Vegas, sources told Schefter. Once a deal is reached, Kubiak — the son of former Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak — would become the franchise’s fifth full-term coach since 2021. With Kubiak off the board, the Cardinals hired Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur as their new head coach, the team announced.”
Some thought Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores might gain some traction for the Raiders’ top job because of his connection to Tom Brady from the New England days, but Flores never secured an interview.
Career to Date
Kubiak has a few more days to stand in the brightest possible NFL spotlight. Coordinating a Super Bowl offense has a way of reopening doors, and the Raiders were watching. It’s the same path Kevin O’Connell rode into Minnesota in 2022.

The soon-to-be Raiders’ boss’s actual body of work lands closer to competent than commanding. Three stints calling plays have produced middle-tier results, and the offensive efficiency rankings reflect that reality without much interpretation: 17th (2021), 25th (2024), then 14th (2025) in EPA/Play. Decent offense — not stellar ones.
Seattle’s current run complicates the evaluation a bit. The defense has carried the weight, but the offense peaked at the right time. The NFC Championship performance mattered to the utmost. Sam Darnold throwing for 346 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions is the snapshot that front offices remember.
Then there’s the name. Gary Kubiak’s legacy still travels well in hiring rooms, and that association builds credibility before a single question is asked. Add Super Bowl exposure to that, and the head coaching interest becomes a no-brainer.
Mendoza + Kubiak = Raiders’ Future

Las Vegas controls the top of the draft, and the league already assumes it points toward Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. With most of the quarterback class staying put for another year, the board thinned out fast. Mendoza stands alone as the cleanest, most immediate option. The Raiders will draft Mendoza, and that’ll be that.
That’s where Kubiak enters the picture. When the Raiders officially hand him a head coaching opportunity, it likely comes with a ready-made quarterback. Mendoza’s profile checks every early-box: polish, processing, arm talent, and production. The Heisman and National Title are evidence.
Other names exist, but they carry longer timelines. Ty Simpson still projects as a developmental bet. LaNorris Sellers and Dante Moore left the conversation by returning to school. So, it’s Mendoza or bust for the Raiders.
