Ralf Schumacher blasts Lewis Hamilton ahead of Ferrari move over Michael Schumacher

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher has cast doubt on Lewis Hamilton’s upcoming move to Ferrari, claiming the seven-time world champion lacks a crucial skill for success with the Italian team.

Schumacher, speaking in a Sport1 interview, specifically criticised Hamilton’s ability to work with engineers on car development.

“Hamilton has never been able to” develop a car perfectly for his driving style, according to the German ex-driver.

The stark assessment comes as Hamilton prepares for his high-profile switch to Ferrari, where he will partner Charles Leclerc from the 2025 season.

In his critique, Schumacher drew a direct comparison between Hamilton and his brother Michael, who also achieved seven Formula 1 world championships.

“The biggest difference is that Michael, among many other qualities, was able to work with the engineers to develop a car perfectly for his driving style. Lewis can’t do that,” Schumacher explained.

He pointed to comments from Mercedes technicians as evidence of Hamilton’s limitations in this area.

According to Schumacher, his brother Michael “always set the direction for his confidants like Ross Brawn or Jean Todt.”

This technical development ability marked a stark contrast between the two champions’ approaches, with Schumacher suggesting Hamilton’s different working style could hinder his Ferrari success.

Schumacher referenced Mercedes boss Toto Wolff’s past comments on the matter, noting that Wolff had “emphasised more than once that a driver should step on the gas and the engineers should develop.”

This approach, according to Schumacher, was necessitated because his drivers “were apparently unable to give the right input.”

Looking ahead to Hamilton’s Ferrari move, Schumacher highlighted Charles Leclerc’s established position within the team.

“Charles Leclerc is the top dog. Everyone in the team knows him,” Schumacher emphasised.

He pointed out that Hamilton faces multiple challenges as he joins Ferrari, with everything being “new” for the British driver.

The situation differs significantly from Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari arrival, according to Ralf.

“Michael came to Ferrari as the current world champion and was much younger. That’s not the case with Lewis,” he explained.

These factors combined suggest Hamilton may face an uphill battle to establish himself at the Italian team.
