Frenkie de Jong was sent off as Raphinha scored twice for Barcelona as they beat Real Madrid in a thrilling Clasico to retain the Spanish Super Cup

Frenkie de Jong was accused of losing his head after being sent off for a horror tackle on Kylian Mbappe. The Barcelona star was given his marching orders in the closing stages of his side’s Spanish Super Cup final win over Real Madrid on Sunday night.

Dutchman De Jong was shown a straight red for a studs-up challenge that went above Mbappe’s shin. And speaking on commentary, Glenn Hoddle claimed the midfielder had “lost his head” when he made the tackle.

Despite having to navigate stoppage time with 10 men, Barca managed to claim a 3-2 victory. Raphinha scored twice, while Robert Lewandowski also found the net.

Speaking post-match, Lewandowski, who scored his side’s second goal, said: “Whenever we beat Real Madrid, it’s a big deal. Sometimes we need more patience, but against Real Madrid you have to be at 100%.

“We won as a team. They played in a low block. We had to be patient, from one side to the other. The most important thing is that we have another title.”

While under pressure Real boss Xabi Alonso said: “Mixed feelings [about the match overall]. We are proud for having competed and disappointed for losing in a hard-fought final.

“The team showed great attitude and commitment but we lacked the precision to reach penalties. It was a very close game.

“We were so close to tying it, even at the very end. Vini[cius Junior] had a great performance. He was so dangerous. The team competed and showed up. I want to congratulate Barcelona.

“The players’ behavior was so good. We knew there would be moments where we wouldn’t have the ball and we’d have to stay compact. We defended well in the first 30 minutes before things got a bit crazy towards the end of the first half.

“When we conceded the third goal, I was 100% convinced we’d have chances to tie it. And we [almost] did, but the ball just didn’t go in.

“We played Kylian [Mbappe] in the last minutes because we wanted to create more danger towards the end. That was the plan even before the game. He wasn’t ready to start.

“It was an even match. We were very close to equalizing at the end. We have to turn this around, recover our players, and forget about the Super Cup already because there’s still a lot of the season left.”
